Don''t actually own a Sienna but was looking for comments related to squeeking brakes for a friend. Sludge seems to be a big problem. I would suggest anyone draining the oil and finding abnormally thick oil should save some and send it out for an oil analysis. There don''t cost much and would identify any foreign substances, burning etc.

Strength:

Are you kidding. I can''t see past the problems.

Weakness:

Electrical, Suspension, Steering, Door Rattles, Cheap Paint Job.

Indescribable Disappointment - The van has had numerous electrical problems since day one, and continues to burn out brake lamps. Van pulls to the left; very tiring to drive. Suspension is mush; wanders the road like a drunken sailer, bottoms out on hard bumps, sways, rocks, and bounces excessively. An obstacle avoidance manuever may send this van out of control. Dealer unsympathetic and apathetic. I''m just biding my time until the engine sludges. Do yourself a favor, buy Honda.

very roomy and safe according to the crash tests

Weakness:

plastic parts that break long before their time

have had no problems with the vehicle performance. have had problems with the mirror covers breaking, and the rear handle breaking and sticking. maybe due to terrific heat of the desert. not sure. but toyota doesn''t seem to feel responsible to help.

Strength:

The rest of the minivan meets or exceeds our expectations.

Weakness:

Toyota''s refusal/inability to fess up to owners, many longtime loyal Toyota buyers, that they have placed a high maintenance engine in what used to be a low maintenance product line. The engine requires frequent oil changes (at least every 2,000 to 3,000 miles) due to highly unusual engine heat that evaporates the lighter oil components leaving a thicker less viscous residue (sludge). Toyota should advise present owners to use engine desludging solvents on a regular basis (every 15,000 miles) to reduce chances of requiring engine replacement ($5,000-$7,000) or valve seal replacement ($800-$1,500). The remotes are poorly designed and result in many accidental triggers of the automated sliding door. I wondered about the sliding door, when I purchased the minivan, but ignored the thought that, "Hey, this is just one more thing that could go wrong." It could be dangerous in certain situations, and the remotes should be redesigned and sent to customers. Shifty maintenance managers at their maintenance shops that encourage costly repairs and a meaningless warranty from Toyota. It appears in a tight economy, Toyota is more concerned about hteir bottom line than customer satisf

The Toyota Sienna would be an excellent minivan with two significant defects. The engine is prone to sludge build-up causing the valve seals to leak and potentially high repair costs, and the sliding door/alarm remotes are too sensitive or poorly designed causing many accidental triggering episodes.

Strength:

Excellent ride, comfortable seating, good looking. I just wish Toyota had a reliable engine in this otherwise fine vehicle.

Weakness:

Engine will not stand up to normal service and operating conditions.

Excessive oil consumption started at 54,000 miles. Dealer said is was "sludge" caused by my poor maintenance which invalidated the factory warranty and the extended warranty. Estimated repair cost $6000. It is time for a class action lawsuit.

I have about 12,000 miles on my Sienna and it''s the best vehicle I have ever owned. I read the other reports of engine sludge, and frankly, I think anyone who changes their oil at 5-7500 miles deserves to get sludge. Regular paraffin-based oil doesn''t hold up that long-especially in the summer. If you change your oil every 3-4000 miles with regular oil, you won''t have a problem. 5-7500 is meant for synthetic blends only. You will never get Toyota to pay for a sludge related problem if you change your oil that far apart.

love the room, the smooth drive

Weakness:

access to back seat not great, but have been in the acura mdx, toyota land cruiser, ford expedition, chevy tahoe and none of them are easy to get into the back

needed a minivan and always liked toyotas..freaked out about what i am reading with sludge, hoping the 2002 don''t have this problem. my dealer recommended 1st oil change at 1000 mi and second at 3500 before going to 5 or 7,000 mile intervals. hope this will help. i won''t go anywhere but the dealer until my 42,000 mile warranty is up and maybe not after that. our dealer has free oil changes for the life of the vehicle so everything will be documented there. love it so far, no problems with the door, brakes etc, but it also only has a few hundred miles on it.

This is my third Toyota and the only one to ever have sludge. Lots of smoke and loss of oil at 16,000 miles. Of course, they claim poor maintenance. Trying to arbitrate is a joke. We have a case # and a 1-800 #. No one will call or mail us and the dealer won''t try to help. Costs are $3400 not to mention $1100 for car rentals b/c the dealer won''t loan us one. Obviously, this engine has a design flaw and the dealer claims not to know anything about it. We''ve always favored Toyota, but we''ve never had a warranty issue either.

The smell of burning oil is very strong!

Weakness:

My patience is getting very weak dealing with these knuckleheads!

Dude: "Mind if I smoke?" Babe: "Why, yes I do mind, heehee." Dude: "Sorry, I can''t help it, I''m driving a Toyota Sienna, the dealer said this is normal!" It''s a SLUDGE EXTRAVAGANZA! Follow the search lights to the big sign! Better yet just follow the stinch of burning oil from the Siennas'' tailpipes!
