Strength:

Handling, radio, style

Weakness:

Very painful to drive.

Just bought the 2009 Matrix and ergonomically it sucks. Can't drive long distances without intense pain. Made for skinny, short drivers.

Strength:

Size, easy to drive, sunroof, price.

Weakness:

gas mileage, brakes are already squeaking, very jerky acceleration.

I really like this car. It's amazing how there is so much room in a car that's 7 inches shorter than the Corrolla. I haven't had any trouble with it other than I only have been getting 23mpg in town and 28mpg on the highway, and the breaks are already squeaking.

Strength:

EVERYTHING!

1. Gas mileage... after 120,000 miles it still gets 34mpg on average!
2. Space
3. Reliability

Weakness:

VERY FEW!

1. Road noise is annoying, but not too bad.
2. Acceleration is sometimes weak.

We bought this car in May 2003. It has 10,000 miles on it and the dealer was wanting to get rid of it quickly. We thought it was quirky and different, and most importantly, it fit out budget.

We have loved this car. Ours has 120,000 miles on it and we haven't had ANY problems with it. We have gone through two pairs of tires and replaced the breaks twice. Besides basic oil changes, we haven't ever had it in the shop.

This car has held everything from furniture, skis, snowboards, kneeboards, 8' PVC pieces (with the hatch glass up) and have moved a few friends with this car.

We have traveled from Greenville, SC to Key West to Niagara Falls in the car and haven't had any problems. I drive it daily to work, about 30 miles round-trip and average 33 mpg even four years later.

We have started considering replacing our other car a Ford truck and the only car we can think of is another Matrix! We hate to be "those people" with the same cars in the driveway, but there isn't a better option out there!

The only things we do not like is the road noise that most people have mentioned and the lack of leather seats as an option. We also replaced our 17" wheels and rims that came with our car with 16" wheels and rims because the 17" wheels were pricey.

Overall, this car rocks. It is an awesome deal and a Toyota product, so it will last until you are ready for something else!

Strength:

Millage
Interior utility

Weakness:

Vibrating plastic noise starting to appear

This car is perfect for practical people looking for a balance of utility, comfort, economy, some sporty feel and price tag.

I got bought this car because it is a Toyota, it is a hatch-back with flat folding back seats. I love its utility immensely. You can transport a bicycle without taking it apart, construction material, mattresses or a couch (with open hatch) or a love-seat (with a closed hatch).

At the same time it has good millage (30-36 mpg). With a manual transmission it has enough power and spice for the city or highway.

I actually liked the visibility in the car, including to the sides and back. It is much better than in Prius.

Sometimes I wish for a 4WD, but it does not seam very practical considering the price, millage, and performance associated with buying an AWD.

The only thing I wish was improved in the Matrix are the plastic moldings and panels. With time it starts making some vibrating noise and it is becoming annoying.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Matrix XR (All Wheel Drive)

Strength:

Low maintenance costs
Great gas mileage
Reliable
Best all-wheel drive handling I have ever experienced

Weakness:

Poor quality/weak aluminum rims (but this defeats hub cap problems with steel rims)
Low ground clearance

Bought this car as a dealer model with 4000 miles. Bought the car with aluminum rims which were punctured by rough roads. This cost me around $250 to fix. Purchased car with the sport trim which leaves little ground clearance. This has resulted in replacing the trim twice and having it repainted a third time due to excessive scraping of paint.
This car is exceptionally reliable! Although it is a little weak in power and a little slow on acceleration, I have had no problems on ice or in snow. The all wheel drive model drives better than ANY SUV or truck I have driven in mud or snow conditions. Gas mileage is great as I get around 28MPG in the city and 34MPG on the highway. I switched the motor oil and transmission oil to synthetic and am getting ready to do the same to the front and rear differential. I plan in the future to replace this car with another Toyota (I would say a Matrix but it appears Toyota is not making the all-wheel drive version at the moment) when this one dies. I love it too much to let it go. At the moment the car is approaching 100,000 miles and has had the brakes and wheels serviced once each.

Model Reviewed: Matrix XR

Strength:

It has a GREAT gas mileage. The fold-down plastic-backed seats are nice but everything tends to slide. Good front/side views. interior space makes it a great value too and this car has a lot of style.

Weakness:

The 07 Toyota Matrix XR is a good value, but there are somethings I don't like on my Matrix.

1) The accelerator pedal is not smooth, when you come to a full stop and you accelerate it fills really strange for less than a second. First I thought it was some kind of a problem but then I realized it is just the way it is, nothing wrong with it. I just don't like it. Once the car is moving it is OK.

2) To back up this car you REALLY need to be extra carefull because you have serious blind spots and I mean it. I am trying to get used to it. But Toyota made a BIG mistake here.

I've owned it for 3 months now. Got the top of the line fully loaded. I liked the car, it is a reliable car and looks really good. The interior is nice, it has a lot of space in it for 4 people, it's amazing how they got this but this car really has great inside space. The 6 CD loader is nice, the stereo sound system is OK. It has a 115V outlet which is VERY nice. Everything seems in the right place and works well.

The engine seems to be a little under powered but hey... you got great gas mileage, but if you are looking for power look for another car.

The Matrix will get you there, it is fun to drive and is a great looking car but it is not a sports car.

Strength:

Great reliability
Outstanding cargo flexibility
Good gas mileage

Weakness:

My only complaint is that the cover for the cargo area behind the rear seats is very cheap.

I love my Matrix! I live in a climate where we typically hit -40 degrees during the winter and this car just starts every time. It handles exceptionally well in all road conditions. The form factor of the seating and cargo area are incredibly flexible.

I have been able to fit the following INSIDE my Matrix on different occasions:
-Three skiers with all of their ski equipment, luggage and coolers for a weekend ski trip.
- Two adults and their full sized mountain bikes.
- My daughter's bunk bed including both matresses

NONE!

Fun reliable car. I had it for more than 2 years, and would have it still except it was totalled in an accident.

As a mom, it was fun to discover that kids & teenagers thought it was a really cool car!!

Plenty of room - considered the Rav4 but this had more room and was more comfortable & was available with a sunroof.
