Pontiac Vibe
Strength:
Fuel efficient, comfortable, tons of room, peppy motor, fun to drive, reliable (It's a Toyota with GM styling).
Weakness:
Needs a telescoping steering wheel. The wheel is too close to the dash. My Vibe is a great little car. I bought it during GM's employee-discount program in 2005. I also bought it because I needed better gas mileage for my work commute. My Vibe has not let me down in that department. I easily average 35-40mpg on highway driving.

Sporty, head turner with good gas mileage. Fun to drive. I take it away from my 16 year old son every chance I get!
Weakness:
BAD CRUISE CONTROL Overall a good little car with good gas mileage & good acceleration. Nice leather interior with the sports package. I got an after market sun roof(I was very hesitant at first)which is much better than factory because when you shut off the ignition, it automatically closes in 10 seconds. I feel for you guys that forget to close yours & then return to a car that forever has that musty, mildew smell after a rain in. You'd think the factory might be smart enough to figure an auto close. Now here's my venting: Passenger seat belt locked up & is inoperable. But here's my real complaint: Cruise control sucks!! The least little incline & this thing shifts down to a lower gear. That really eats up the gas mileage. Might as well not have it unless you're on very, very flat terrain. Took it in & they said that's the way it's supposed to operate. Anyone else have this problem? |

Vibe GT
Strength:
Fuel efficiency, fold down rear and passenger seating.
Weakness:
Tires, rattles all around the car, clutch, time for product replacements (10 hours for the clutch to be fixed), cruise control. Overall I quite like my Vibe GT with its fold down sits it's fantastic for camping, moving, or loading large items. Other than that our car has had multiple problems, ranging from the clutch needing replacement already at 20,000km, and our tires already needing replace to what GM quotes as "regular wear and tear". Our instrument panel does nothing but rattle, and our cruise control is jumpy when going over large hills and even the small ones. If the vibes rpm's jump whilst in gear the engine starts to smell like burning rubber. The fog lights on the car already cracked in a light snowstorm. All of these issues can be dealt with under warranty...except the tires!!!...thank goodness I bought the extra 2 years of warranty. Similar Products Used: Pontiac Aztec |

Strength:
Fun to drive Good power when the engine is used properly. Forget drag racing :). High utility Unique styling Good gas mileage Initial quality, fit and finish seem very good.
Weakness:
The accelerator is a bit touchy. One tap before letting out the clutch can send the engine to 3000 RPM. So go easy! My old Stealth R/T had a nicely cammed accelerator which was very easy to use. This one will take a bit of getting used to. A leather seat option would be nice. I hear the 2005 model will include this feature. This is the first new car that I have purchased that has not had to go back for warranty work within the first 30 days. This car combines excellent utility - a great Home Depot car, with comfort and it is pretty sporty too. I use this car primarily for commuting to and from work on back roads. The car is comfortable, reasonably quiet for a car in its class and a lot of fun on the twisty roads. The engine gets a bit noisy at high RPMs but what engine isn't? This 'little' 1.8 liter engine pulls quite well given it's size and seems pretty smooth. It is a bit weak down low, but with the 6-speed manual transmission this engine can give very nice performance provided you run it in the higher RPM ranges. The same can be said for the Honda S2000 - that engine has to be used correctly. I happen to like the interior design and layout and so do the people I work with. I cannot find any major faults. Even on bright and sunny days I have no issues reading the instrument panel. The car so far is rattle-free and no defects have been discovered. I purchased the rear cargo mat and the cargo nets. These have improved the day-to-day utility of the cargo section of the car. Similar Products Used: Dodge Stealth R/T Pontiac Sunfire GT |

Strength:
-lots of space -sporty looks -fuel efficient -good handling
Weakness:
-engine is loud at high revs -wind noise is loud at high speed -suspect factory installed Continental tires -rear liftglass weather-stripping came loose I bought the Base Vibe with automatic transmission last June. Overall, the car has tremendous utility. It is amazing how much stuff can fit in the car. I have had some problems, though, with uneven tire wear with the factory-installed Continental tires. I brought it in to the dealer and they said it was in need of an alignment. However, the uneven tire wear was in the form of 'patchy' bald spots and a raised tire belt, which would lead me to believe there was a defect in all 4 tires. Has anyone else experienced this? roomy, modern and new looking not like any thing else on the road, at gas prices so high? i can go for 3.5 weeks on 20.00 gas, lots of options for an affordable car, back wiper, moon roof, tons of goodies in the back for storage ---awsome!
Weakness:
you should spring for the cargo mat, i have lost many a grocery on that slick plastic surface, especially if you dont baracade them in, you will have your crap everywhere. its 60.00 on the website or at the dealer, beleive me it is so worth it. As all new car buyers out there i hunted and hunted to find the perfect one. i absolutely love this car. hesistant at first to buy a pontiac, however learning that it came from toyota and was ranked number 2 in consumer reports as a midsize, i sealed the deal. you definately should get the moon and tunes package if you like your music loud like me. the car is zippy and fun and i have loved surprising people with the amount of space i have to carry things. such as i just bought a giant portable basketball set, fit in perfectly. email me if you want more info before buying i would be happy to tell you more Similar Products Used: i tried the hundai sonnata, santa fe, the pontiac grand prix, and a jeep liberty- by far this car was the best choice all around--i trust consumer reports and actual car owners! |

Strength:
Around city acceleration is great (manual transmission base engine) It needs more highway passing response, though. Downshifting to 4th gear isn't enough. I need to downshift 2 gears to 3rd to get decent passing. Averaging 29-30mpg with a mix of city and highway driving. Steering is straight and direct. Inside and outside has high quality materials and workmanship. Big inside, but fits in tight parking spots. Almost a foot shorter than my last car, a Cavalier Z24 coupe. Feels solid and well put together. Should have better resale value than many other GM cars. Great incentives.
Weakness:
Highway passing response, horn is cheap sounding and high pitched. Seats definitely need more lower-back support and could use more side bolstering as well. Steering's great, but handling's only ok. Not fun to take around the twisties. Loud engine. Poorly placed center armrest. Overall great car. The best parts are its gas mileage and great sound system (Monsoon package). Get the Moon and Tunes package. Well worth it! I think this is a nicer looking car than the Matrix and most agree. As opposed to most, I actually like the plastic paneling. I don't think it looks bad and parking very often in the city, I'm not worried about paint marks when someone taps my bumper getting in or out. Base Vibe auto
Strength:
Versitility, styling, quality, many standard features, mileage, space
Weakness:
ugly gray plastic cladding Great vehicle. Very happy with it. Toyota reliability a big plus. The practicality ceases to amaze me. For those who are thinking of buying the vibe or the matrix, take a close look at the details... the matrix may be priced cheaper innitially, but the vibe gets a whole bunch of standard features not included with the matrix. Fog lights, power mirrors, block heater, air conditioning and a host of other things are missing from the base matrix that are standard on a vibe. Toss in the financing and incentives and it's a no brainer, especially for those shopping in Canada where the warranties on these vehicles are identical! In the end it will come down to either the numbers or a personal preferance for the exterior styling. Can't say enough good things about this car. Handles really well in traffic. Great gas mileage. Great take-off capability. Really surprised me for a 4-cylinder. I like the extra room for hauling. The back seats just fold down - no removing seats. There is enough room to carry my daughter's concert harp. My husband has not complained about changing the oil - so everything must be conveniently located. I don't know much about those things!
Weakness:
Road noise - A little noisy on interstate driving. I find I have to adjust my radio frequently (according to the speed I am traveling). I really like my Vibe! I went from owning minivans for 8 years to a smaller SUV look. The only adjustment that has taken me time to get accustom to is the interior room. I was so used to having a lot of extra seats and floor space with those vans. It gets really good gas mileage for a mom that runs all the time. I like the "sporty" look it gives, also. When we started looking for a new vehicle, the kids were determined for us not to buy another minivan. They said we have had a van for all their lives and it was time for something different. My son saw the Vibe commerical when it first aired and really like them; so we stopped to take a look and test drive one. We had to find a vehicle that 5 people could sit comfortably in and also have the capability of carrying a harp. My daughter plays the harp for weddings, receptions, etc. and therefore we had to have a way to get it back and forth. |
