Sleek body, sliding rear doors, 2.3 motor is reliable even though 5 speed standard tranny makes it spin excessively at 75 mph.

front disks warped at 60,000 mi making steering shudder, rear electric locks failed at 50,000, negative camber on rear wheels eats tires at 30,000 miles (they are very expensive),struts failed at 65,000mi, pain to change oil as car sits very low and requires seven 10mm bolts to remove plastic panel to access 1950's style cartridge (not spin!) oil filter and drain oil, because it is so low it snags road debris which damages CV boots (try finding them aftermarket), A/C died after 115,000 miles, headlight bulbs last about a year at $20.00 a pop and a pain to replace, cabin filter accessible if you are a contortionist, air filter and battery are hidden away by plastic covers which are a nuisance to access, navigation system ($2,000 option) was obsolete when it came out and the company who supplied the CD updates stopped supporting it the same year it came out, aftermarket support for maintenance and replacement parts is weak and some places do not even list Mazda 5 (most Mazda 3 parts will fit provided it has same engine), the dealer will be glad to sell you parts if you are willing to wait a few days and pay their huge markup.

Its pleasing spaceship shape, decent 26-28 mpg, and stoic motor cannot make up for the out of this world amount of time and money it takes to maintain this car to 150,000 miles. Car was designed for dealer maintenance. Oil system back-flush anyone?

everything else, lots of creaking, brakes gone after 30,000kms, tires gone after 45000kms, rotated 4 times, interior breaking down, steering wheel tilt does not stay, gets lose, suspension noise, wind noise, door's no loner lock with key fob, car alarm did not go off when passenger window broken into.

These things are horrible, great concept but at the dealer twice a month and they do nothing at all.

I would never tell anyone to buy one of these, worst car in 20 years of driving I have ever had.

Lots of room for it's size. Manual option on auto transmission is great! Handles great.

Expensive tires wore out @30,000 miles. Front passenger's side seat needs a arm rest, sun visors too short.

Great car/van/wagon...whatever you want to call it. Fun to drive good MPG 24 around town. We have driven this vehicle lots of highway miles well loaded and it has done everything we need it to..was a lttle small with 4 adults traveling. Fully loded it struggles to get up hills when on the highway.

Size is perfect for urban and freeway use. Good mpg. Nice ride characteristics; sporty but on the soft side; quiet. Nice interior layout; I especially like the center console. Seats and interior room fit me perfectly - I'm 5'11, 200 lbs.

Read the owner's manual before loading up the 6 disc cd changer. Steering wheel controls for cruise and radio/cd could be better, but still very good. Satin silver finish of transmission console - a darker color would be better. Needs a very small light in the center storage console.

Purchased used with 26K. Handles, brakes, etc., all very nicely. Seats are firm but comfortable. Excellent use of space. 6 disc cd changer is good; speakers could be better. Steering is sporty, though a bit heavy. I am very pleased with the mpg so far; averaging in the high 20's. A mini-minivan is a good description. So far does everything my '99 Olds minivan does, just in more compact dimensions and with better mpg.

a/c cools the car down VERY quickly... back storage is awesome with third row seat folded flat... had just as much space as i used to in my montana van

new noise in the brakes as i reverse, but could be dust as i've been on a lot of gravel roads lately... only thing i don't like is that mazda only offers the black interior (a pain to keep clean with pre-teen kids) and that the windows don't come factory tinted..

So far I'm enjoying my 'VAR' as my kids nicknamed it... gas mileage not quite as high as touted, handling is great, mechanically sound so far.. 3mths only but have 6500kms on it... am averaging the 22mpg, not the 27... i think they could add a middle seatbelt to the third row seats to seat 7 just like a van instead of the 6... so far so good...
