Strength:
NICE LOOKING VAN (SPORTS EDITION)
Weakness:
FRONT END, TRANSMISSION, ENGINE, BRAKES AND BODY STRIPING COMES OFF EASILY. HAD TO HAVE REPAINTED DO NOT BUY A WINDSTAR! FIRST PROBLEM WAS THE TIE RODS, THEN THE STRUT BEARINGS AT LESS THAN 40,000 MILES. NOW THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 50,000 MILES. THESE ARE THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT FORD EXPERIENCED IN THE EARLIER MODELS AND THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING TO IMPROVE THEM. JUST BECAUSE THE VAN LOOKS GOOD, DO NOT BE FOOLED. THEY ARE JUNK AND FORD DOESN'T CARE. I HAD A CHEVROLET PICKUP TRUCK THAT HAD OVER 150,000 MILES AND I STILL OWN A PONTIAC SUNFIRE WITH OVER 120,000 MILES AND HAVE HAD NO MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH EITHER ONE. |

Weakness:
Their sales people, the service manager, the owner, they don't want anything to do with problems. The "Causeway" in Manahawkin is very poor. We bought the car when it was Island Honda and now that Ford owns it they want nothing to do with us. They won't return your phone calls. The car we bought was in 2 accidents and we were never told about it. The transmission is bad an the whole front end is shot. We will never buy another car from Causeway Honda or Ford because if they won't help us now what makes us know they will help us any other time? The service manager doesn't know what he is talking about and their sales people sell lemons! |

Interior a good size.
Weakness:
So far just the stalling, but I am afraid of what else is going to happen with it!!!! We have only had the vehicle for 6 months and now it is stalling for no apparent reason. The first time it was doing it when we received a foot of snow so I did not think much of it. Now today it is only raining a bit and it stalled everytime I tried to take off. So much for switching to Ford. I should have listened to my Dad and bought a Chevy!!! Similar Products Used: None, I previously had a piece of junk Plymouth Breeze. |

Strength:
It is a new vehicle! (I wanted to purchase an American vehicle from an American company.)
Weakness:
On three (3) different occasions, when applying the brake, the engine revs up. January 4, 2003, I purchased a 2003 Windstar (2FMZA51473BA52047) from Paul Miller Ford in Lexington, KY. Driving from the dealership, I used the cruise control on the interstate. At Corbin, KY, in exiting from I-75, as I began breaking, the engine began to “rev” up, reaching 4000 to 5000 rpms. It did this three (3) times: once as I was stopping and twice in restarting the vehicle at the intersection, in exiting onto another road. The fourth time I restarted the engine, the engine was all right. January 11, 2003, I was in Greenville, SC, the town of my residence, the engine revved up twice. Once as I was breaking for a traffic light and a second time, as I restarted the engine. In both instances, I turned of the ignition switch off to stop the engine. I reported the problem to Ford and the Ford dealership in Greenville, SC. The dealership placed a black box/flight recorder on the vehicle, but, the engine did not rev up when it was on the vehicle. (The Greenville dealership replaced the emergence brake racket for it was defective.) In the past few weeks, the van, at times, is difficult to stop: it seems as if the power brakes is not operating correctly. Saturday, April 26, 2003, in backing the vehicle, the engine revived up, making this the third time. Ronny Paul Greenville, SC 29607-1138 |

Strength:
Price (only if you're buying), roominess and good looks.
Weakness:
Depreciation and very poor quality. This is the worst vehicle we have ever owned. Period. Having two kids to cart around we needed the room of a minivan and decided to buy a used Windstar mainly due to the price (read depreciation), good looks and the larger 3.3L engine. At first it was fairly reliable although the previous owner had replaced the transmission at 50,000 km!! Why why why can't minivan makers put a decent transmission in these things? To be fair it never left us stranded on the road, but it drove us crazy with frequent annoying little problems. These problems included daytime running lights that stopped working, a broken parking brake linkage, squeaks in the engine area that we tried to fix but they came back, interior lights that never shut off, doors ajar (when not), chimes in the dash that go off for no reason, ABS brake failure, steering failure, rear wiper sometimes fails/sometimes works, side door lock failure, van thinks the key is in when its not and you can't lock the doors. Having owned reliable oldsmobile cars for years I had never experienced anything like this. We recently traded the Windstar on a reliable Honda CRV and we're happy once again. Unless you're good with mechanical things, stay away from the Windstar. |

Strength:
Good ride. Looks as good as any other mini-van.
Weakness:
NO INTEGRITY. Poor transmission and numerous recalls, no help from Ford on solving any of these problems. This is my first and LAST Ford product. I have always owned Nissan's, Toyotas or Hondas and have always had great experiences. I have never known what it is like to have repair bills on a vehicle, but believe me, I now know. I purchased a Windstar because my wife and I have three children and we needed the extra room of a mini-van. I felt a little guilty of always buying foriegn vehicles, so after test driving the Windstar and liking the intitial ride and comfort, we decided to give Ford a chance. We had little problems the first year. Since then, its been down hill. We've had in excess of 4 recalls, been stranded by breaking down two times (first time was a vacuum hose problem which had supposedly been fixed at the dealership already, the second was at 54,000 miles when the transmission completly failed with no warning, stranding my wife and three kids in the middle of a busy 8 lane highway). I have never towed anything with this vehicle and it has never been abused, so I wonder why such a "Quality" (This is Job 1, RIGHT) product would fail shortly after 50,000 miles? Could this be an inherent problem? I called Fords customer assistance program and was told that this was an unfortunate event, however there were no warranties to cover this and no Ford assistance. The dealership told me that the repair would cost $3,000. I just spent nearly $300 dollars on the last engine repair 4 months ago(I was told there was a service bulletin issued on this vacuum hose problem, but no recall, so the cost to fix was once again mine). This vehicle has also been a lousy investment, considering that a Honda Odyssey of the same year and equal mileage now books for $10,000 more than my Ford. The depreciation is horrible. If your considering buying a mini-van and have tons of extra cash that you don't have anything better to do with than to spend on huge repair bills, then this is the van for you. However, if your like me and want to get the best investment for your money, consider a Honda or a Toyota. Im trading in my "Money Pit on Wheels" this weekend for either a Honda or Toyota. Ford, you blew your chance with me! |

Windstar Limited
Strength:
Much quieter cabin, TV screen in ceiling is much nicer (2000's was down on the console), the ride is even smoother, more car like handling and transmission is smoother; seat memory settings are great as are the heated seats. Tailgate is easier to lift now than our 2000 model
Weakness:
None I can think of right now I love our new 2003 Limited...replaces our 2000 Limited, which we are reluctantly selling, by the way. We thought the 2000 was great but the 2003 is even better and with more fun goodies. Our 2000 is black and now the 2003 is Estate Green and both look great. The 2003 is much smoother a ride and the noise is quieter on the road. (Ford must have been reading these reviews?) We worked with a great dealer to get a good price and we're pleased. Now, I wonder what the 2004 Freestar will be like? Similar Products Used: 2000 Windstar Limited |

Strength:
A new name for the 2004 windstar
Weakness:
Still made by the same people that give comsumer no respect For the 2004 model, Windstar will change its name to Freestar, although it will still carry the same engine, trainsmission and body. A very dishonest way to push sales. Ford wants to get rid of the bad reputation assosiated with Windstar, ask different Ford dealers about the name change and they will give you the standard answer issued by Ford, do not be fooled by that, the company is still much more eager to cut cost than improve quality, it is a bad time to buy a Ford product. |

Ford Windstar LX
Strength:
It has 4 wheels.
Weakness:
Lack of Power and poor gas mileage. Floor is too high for loading & unloading. Poor visibility. Transmission failed. Shock Failed. Fuel pump failed. Tie rod ends replaced. Poor fit & finish inside and out. Five attempts made to replace an engine knock. Ford finally decided that this is normal for it's engine's to knock. Only a fool would buy this car. It may appear cheaper than a Honda or Toyota, but after the $10,000 depreciation in the first two years, the Honda & Toyota are far cheaper. If you want a new car that is in the shop all of the time, this one is for you. Similar Products Used: 1993 Plymouth Voyager (Lemon Law Buyback) 1994 Plymouth Gr Voyager |
