Weakness:
Uhh. I would like to have more confidence when I turn the key. Bought in February 2003. 2nd day home, wouldn't start. Dealer installed new battery & starter. Early August, wouldn't start. Dealer installed another new battery. Late August, wouldn't start again. Another dealer's repair shop has it now. Any ideas or similiar problems? Seems like somtething is draining the battery. Hurray for warranty's! Similar Products Used: 1993 Ford Aerostar. Still going! A/C line corroded through/replaced. Oil pan developed leak/replaced. |

Transmission, steering rack and gasket problems!! Loved my van until a year ago. The steering rack went at 62,000 miles. The Check Engine Light has been on and off for about the last year. First it was a vacuum leak, then we could not diagnose the problem. When my transmission went a month ago, they discovered the intake valve gasket was causing the Check Engine Light problem. All told, we have had to put $4000.00 of work into a 4 year old van with less than 75,000 miles on it. Luckily our extended warranty has covered the repairs. We have 1 more year on the extended warranty and then this thing is out the door!! I would get rid of it now if I didn't still owe $$ on it!! I have been using an independent repair facility and do not dare go to the dealer for anything other than the occassional recall!! Similar Products Used: None. We have a 92 Chevy pickup with 90,000 miles. Before the minivan, we drove a Honda(110,000miles) and a Pontiac Grand Prix(junk). |

Transmission, cooling system, engine problems, suspension problems I've experienced numerous problems with this vehicle. Air Intake Valves and Head Gasket problems. Additionally the transmission seems to jerk and according to tests on the road and landmarked based police radar units it is -4 to -5 MPH off on the speedometer! The air conditioning both front and back has failed. I perform routine maintainance on this vehile and it is used for mainly highway driving for work. My advice to anyone considering a FORD is to think again! Similar Products Used: Chevy Astro Van (much better) but not front wheel drive |

Tranmission, Transmission, Transmission!!! With less than 48000 miles on it I have had to replace the tie rod ends, fuel valve, and now the transmission failed as we began to cross a VERY busy highway.Luckily, oncoming traffic avoided us. Dealer acts as if this transmission problem is news to them. I can put up with the recalls this model year has had, (wiper motor, tow harness wiring etc.)but my family was endangered by this KNOWN defect. I have always driven Fords, but this is the last. As soon as it's repaired,it's gone. Similar Products Used: 2 Ford Explorers |

Ford Windstar SEL
Strength:
Here are some of the things I loved about my van: 1) automatic sliding doors, 2) extra rearview mirror to let me keep an eye on all athletes in car, 3) fairly good cargo space for a van, 4) comfortable seats, 5) nice looking paint and trim, 6) easy to keep clean and 7) the greatest feature - rear sensors! (No more bikes, footballs, trash cans, etc. to run over!)
Weakness:
Here are my problems with this van - 1) difficulty in removing seats, 2) no key locks on passenger side of car (which is annoying if your keyless entry battery goes dead), 3) car doors do not open automatically unless van is in park, 4) funny smell when air conditioner first goes on and the biggest problem of all 5) if you read Ford Windstar reviews by owners, you will find that your transmission will eventually have some major problems and will probably need to be replaced which even under warranty may not be fully covered! Be prepared for this - it happened to me last week and even with only 27,000 miles on my car and great upkeep they are unwilling to pay for this repair with a warranty! If Ford can solve this problem, then I would definitely buy this van again. Until then, stay far away from it! Yes, I AM the quintessential soccer mom who you hear about in the media. And I've spent the last 3 years driving my 2000 Ford Windstar SEL to numerous sporting events. I've loved it and have had only little problems with it. However, that all changed last week. I would NEVER purchase a Ford again because it is UNRELIABLE, and when something major needs to be repaired, they are UNWILLING TO PAY for repairs that are under warranty. Similar Products Used: I've also owned a 1998 Ford Windstar with HUGE problems and a 1996 Honda Odyssey minivan which I loved but we grew out of it. |

non to report yet just this morning july 23rd , 2003 i brought in my windstar for transmission problem. i am told it is a very big job. thank God for the warranty which will expire in 1 month. i bought the ford w/star mainly because i still have a ford 1988 bronco which turned out to be gold. i am having second thoughts now by reading all the reviews and thinking after repairs should i sell it and buy an import car. i cannot beleive that at 59000 kms i must have my tranmission possibly rebuilt. this is crazy and by reading all the reviews transmission problems go back several years. i was asked if the 50000km service was done and i answered no because it is very expensive and they then present you with a list of problems to be fixed which in dollar amounts exceeds the 300.00 inspection . up to now i did not find it to be a money pit but i am starting to worry. Similar Products Used: bronco 1988 with minor wear and tear problems but never a big problem at 59000kms like on my windstar. |

head gasket, pulleys, serpentine belt, timing chains, door sensors Recently I have had a problem with my Windstar. I have recently replaced the head gaskets, and couple other gaskets, replaced the alternator, replaced rear and front brakes, pulleys and belts. Timing Chain and serpentine belt 4 times. I have had the car to the ford service department many times since Jan. 03 and on this past Monday is was back in again for the chirping noise in the front end. They did discover that the pulley they put in was off. Well, next day chirping is back. Guess where it is going, back to the service department after I pick it up from getting the barakes done. I also had problems with the door indicator light on so I sprayed some lubricant on the contacts and that works good. So if anyone else has that same problem don't wasted your money, spray the contacts yourself. Because Ford will make you pay for their famous dianostic testing. I am very frustrated with my service department. I feel their mechanics have no clue what they are doing. Ford Co. doesn't care either as I have called them.
