Roomy and nice ride

TRANSMISION,TRANSMISION,TRANSMISION,TRANSMISION. ? The transmission went at about 10k was replaced by the dealer. ? Belt tension pulley had to be replaced. ? Both sliding doors rattles. ? At 67500 miles transmission sensor module had to be replace. Problem Indication was, service soon light on transmission would not shift and the speedometer would not work. Dealer repair Cost $155.00. ? The Transmission on these Caravan goes out at 70K miles +/-, the sales person that sold me the mini van swear that transmission was redesigned and fixed by dodge, not to worried life is good. ? I had an 89 plymouth mini van for 10 years and went through 3 transmissions trade it in for the 99 sport caravan. Reason for buying it was long waiting period on the Honda. PS, I would love to buy American, but by reading all these posts shows the same problems and tells me that these CAR Companies don't care about the average American consumer. Strength:
The van is very roomy, and is a very comfortable ride. I have the base model Grand, and the noise level is low, but a great improvement over my '91 caravan.
Weakness:
The only complaint I would have about my Caravan, is the cost of replacing the windshield, you would need to keep full coverage on it just for that reason. The windshield is $1800.00. The fact that the van's design doesn't change from year to year, no incentives to trade in and get newer, when all you get is less miles. I have had this van for nearly 3 years, and I have had very few problems. Everyone says transmissions are so bad, but I have never had any problems with the 2 caravans I have had. This caravan now has 80,000 miles on it and nothing major yet. I have had 2 recalls which were discovered when the problem arose. I agree with others about the wipers turning on for no reason, which is irritating since a wiper on dry dirty glass scratches the glass. The only thing I have replaced is the waterpump in the almost 3 years of ownership. I am very satisfied with my Caravan. I must say that my sister has a 1990 Dodge Caravan with over 250,0000 miles on it, and it has NEVER had the Trasmission worked on except for routine maintainence, the key to a long lasting transmission. I traded off my '91 caravan, with 140,000 miles on it, and never had that trasmission worked on either. Similar Products Used: 1991 Dodge Caravan |

Transmission problem at 49,000 miles, No storage space I bought this car new, so I wouldn't have to deal with anymore transmission problems, for at least 7-10 years, like my last two used vehicles. Well at 49,000 miles my transmission is being torn down to find the problem this very moment. I thought this was a reliable minivan...I thought wrong. Weakness:
Motor and Transmission problems. Please please...replace the transmission cooler and Throttle Positioning Sensor when you replace transmission...it is a must. at 122,000 km developed engine noise which reulted in replacement of new motor covered under extended warrenty. Had problems fiting existing transmission housing to new motor and transmssion was replaced too. At 170,000km replaced 3rd transmission at 2,200 dollars canadian. At 220,000km replaced 4th transmission. At 245,000km replaced 5th transmission. The latest transmission replacement found clogged core of transmssion cooler (200 Dollars), and Throttle Positioning Sensor. Seems to have fixed the problem. |

I love it. A reliable, comfortable, very roomy minivan. Nothing has gone wrong so far. The front and middle seats are very comfortable, but the rear is slightly cramped. The 3.3-liter V6 provides almost sporty performance. The controls are easy to use, and the radio/compact disc controls in the steering wheel are very usefull. It has excellent fit and finish. Comfortable seating. Lots of cup holders.
Weakness:
Poor customer service. Poor quality. I absolutely HATE this vehicle. I see what driving an American vehicle costs. It's more than the sticker on the lot. Currently, our air conditioning is not working, and this is after we have put 800+ dollars into it. The evaporator coil has now gone out and we are fairly sure that it is because they(the dealership service center) did not replace the dryer. They now want an additional $1000. This does not even top(in my opinion) the way Dodge has treated us. Our windshiels wipers turn on for NO APPARANT REASON. It can be dry as a bone, and our windshield wipers are moving back and forth. When I called Dodge about the problem, they claimed it to be normal wear and tear. Now folks, this is the newest car I have ever driven and NEVER have I had my windshield wipers break due to wear and tear. Maybe if I lived in rainy Seattle, but in Ohio! They did tell me to pay the $180.00 to fix the problem and if it was ever recalled they would pay me back if I kept the reciept. We are currently looking at buying a Honda Odyssey. My advice is to spend the extra money and gey a quality car! |

Strength:
Good acceleration, very confortable seats, lots of room, seats are easy to remove, two sliding doors
Weakness:
Reliability (transmission problems) I really liked everything about my 1999 Grand Caravan until August of this year. The transmission went bad at 45,000 miles, and not just electronic problems like a speed sensor or a soleniod pack. The transmission pan had a big pile of metal shavings in it when my mechanic drained the fluid, the thing literally tore itself up on the inside. The repair bill will total over $3000. I even had the transmission serviced at 30,000 miles before any of this happened. Similar Products Used: None |

My model has two built in car seats... they are AWESOME, and was put to good use over the last 4 years.
Weakness:
Seemed to hold up fairly well, but once one thing went wrong...watch out.. it was a landslide effect. Shortly after I purchased my van (used..4 y/o) the electircal system went out. That was a real treat... Over all it hasn't been a bad car. I am currently shopping around to get a vehicle. Its getting up there in miles, and over the last year I have had to put about $2,000.00 worth of work into it. No thanks.. I am moving on now, out of the world of the mini-vans. Similar Products Used: none.... any suggestions for the new vehicle???? |

This vehicle is a joy to drive and have
Weakness:
The only other minor gripe is that the cross-pieces on the roof rack make rattling noises during highway driving. This mini-van is the best what we could expect. It runs almost soundless, so quiet. Very quick and handles excellent. The seats are very comfortable. This van has been very reliable, with no problems during the 40000 miles we've owned it. The 3.8 V6 is powerful and smooth, and gets decent gas mileage. The transmission shifts smoothly and performs well. We have had no problems with any electrical or mechanical equipment. To the Toyota guy bellow. Maybe you should read Toyota van Reviews on this site. Lots of unhappy owners of that van with now Famous Engine Sludge problems. |

Ride and interior comfort are very good.
Weakness:
7 sensors have failed in 75,000 miles. At $75 a pop to diagnose (that before the parts a labor to fix the problem) I figure I'm out $1,000 dollars to keep an orange light from glowing on my dashboard. So much for buying the cheaper vehicle. Two sensor failures have stranted by wife miles from home. In the end, I am sure I'll pay as much $$$ on this van as I would have on the Toyota I wanted, not including frustration of having to have the van "fixed" every few months. DON'T BUY THIS VAN !!! The only reason I purchased a Chrysler vehicle was because of the price and the design. At the time I purchased the vehicle, the price was a few thousand dollars better than the imports vans and I liked the interior design and comfort better than the other domestic vans. My biggest mistake... not buying a Toyota like I wanted to in the first place.
