What's New for 2010
The 2010 Volkswagen Passat receives VW's DSG dual-clutch automated manual transmission in place of the old conventional automatic. It also gets a new multifunction steering wheel, a new radio, standard Bluetooth connectivity and optional 18-inch wheels.

On the road, the 2010 Passat hits the perfect blend of reassuring handling, a supple ride, and absolute composure at above-legal cruising speeds. The interior is arguably the nicest in this class, boasting high-quality materials and a classy look. Another feature is the available wagon version, a welcome alternative to the oversize SUV.

The front-wheel-drive 2010 Volkswagen Passat is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is VW's responsive DSG, a six-speed, dual-clutch automated manual.

Fuel economy is quite good given the Passat's peppy performance. EPA estimates stand at 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

The 2010 Volkswagen Passat is available as a midsize sedan or wagon. Both body styles come in Komfort trim only. Standard equipment on the sedan includes 17-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield washer nozzles, foglights, a sunroof, air-conditioning, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette vinyl upholstery, a power driver seat, heated front seats, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer, an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

Options include 18-inch alloy wheels, a variety of exterior appearance packages (sedan only), an iPod adapter (replaces the standard aux jack) and a hard-drive-based touchscreen navigation system with a USB port, an iPod interface and 20GB available for digital music storage.

Strength:

good looks sitting in the parking lot. It does tha a lot. Heated seats in Minnesota are sure nice.w

Weakness:

Continual repair problems, several different occurances and problems.n

Replaced headlights x's 2, IGNITION COILS x's 3, Oxygen sensor and computer reprogramming. What's next, incidental airbag deployment? Enough is enough. Look up your states lemon laws and pursue them before you get stranded or worse. The dealership at the time of purchase was excellent, but now it has gone to average. VW customer serive is a joke. Rude and out of place. Buy a toyota or honda.p

Looks and very good ride

Weakness:

Won't preform in the snow. Traction Control is a waste. Does anyone else have the same problem.

Car makes alot of interior creeks and rattles. The traction control is useless in bad weather. The car won't even make it up a small hill in the snow. The anti lock brakes seem to cause more harm than good when road has snow cover.

This is my 4th Passat in a row. I have owned one of each generation since '91. When you compare handling, safety, fit & finish, features, interior room & price, nothing else even comes close. Every system works smoothly in concert with all of the others.

Strength:

1.8T - great power and pickup. Fantastic handling. Smooth/solid ride and quiet. Appears to be well built and heavier than most cars in its size and class compared to other American and Japanese cars.

Weakness:

Annoying little problems. Back door couldn't open. Returned to the dealer twice for the same problem. Has a problem with what VW calls "J-Coils". There are four. When one goes it affects the emission and bucks very bad. VW acknowledges a problem and has introduced an upgraded "J-coil", free of charge - but refuses to replace all four. Bad if you break down in the boonies. Stressful to know you can break down any minute due to the J-coil. Dashboard indicater (door ajar) light staying lit. Hope the bugs get out before the warranty disappears.

2002 VW/Passat (1.8T) GS After one year on the road; very nice, well built-German engineered vehicle. Great power for a surprizing 1.8 engine. The turbo has great pick up and extraordinary power.

Strength:

Styling, excellent interior layout and road handling.

Weakness:

I wish that the dash lit up when the ignition is turned on and that I could close the tailgate without it locking every time. Oh yes, coil packs. I only have about 2.5K so haven't had the problem - yet. I carry a spare coil pack and know how to replace the one that fries so it will be only a minor annoyance - about 5 minutes with 10 minutes maximum.

By far, one of the best cars that I have ever owned. It is fun to drive and I look forward to driving it every day.

Strength:

Smooth, strong highway acceleration (V6), Seating comfort (just the right firmness and shape), gage layout, German handling. Simple but very accurate trip computer. Exterior styling, paint, finish.

Weakness:

Can only lock doors with remote when leaving the car (not the in-door control). Cowling under engine must be removed for oil changes (but keeps drag coeff very low). Requires premium fuel. Shift from 1st to 2nd occurs early enough that it feels a bit like "hesitation" (Tiptronic 5 spd auto) until you get used to it and push a little harder.

By far the nicest car I've ever owned. Performance, comfort, handling, styling, interior layout. Haven't seen the dealer since the sale. Nothing needed except oil changes and tire rotation. It's a joy to drive it every day.

IGNITION COILS

I loved this car looks, feel the complete package until it started to have problems, first the monsoon radio, then the headlights. The latest and greatest the ignition coils I have had all four replaced, when the third went I asked for the last to be replaced and got the standard we can't fix them until they go. Not to mention they told me they played with the factory settings on my engine, YAHOO. I commute 130 miles a day or more and I pray every time I turn the ignition key. I have also packed a bag that I leave in the car because I know this car is going to strand me again. I must say my dealership has bent over backwards but their hands are tied. VW of America should step up to the plate and do the right thing. I plan to unload this lemon ASAP.
