What's New for 2010
The 2010 Volkswagen Passat receives VW's DSG dual-clutch automated manual transmission in place of the old conventional automatic. It also gets a new multifunction steering wheel, a new radio, standard Bluetooth connectivity and optional 18-inch wheels.

On the road, the 2010 Passat hits the perfect blend of reassuring handling, a supple ride, and absolute composure at above-legal cruising speeds. The interior is arguably the nicest in this class, boasting high-quality materials and a classy look. Another feature is the available wagon version, a welcome alternative to the oversize SUV.

The front-wheel-drive 2010 Volkswagen Passat is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pumps out 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is VW's responsive DSG, a six-speed, dual-clutch automated manual.

Fuel economy is quite good given the Passat's peppy performance. EPA estimates stand at 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

The 2010 Volkswagen Passat is available as a midsize sedan or wagon. Both body styles come in Komfort trim only. Standard equipment on the sedan includes 17-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield washer nozzles, foglights, a sunroof, air-conditioning, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette vinyl upholstery, a power driver seat, heated front seats, Bluetooth and an eight-speaker sound system with an in-dash six-CD changer, an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

Options include 18-inch alloy wheels, a variety of exterior appearance packages (sedan only), an iPod adapter (replaces the standard aux jack) and a hard-drive-based touchscreen navigation system with a USB port, an iPod interface and 20GB available for digital music storage.

I really have loved this car. It is smooth and comfortable with plenty of power through the mountains of upper New England. I am hoping the dependability will be as good as my last Japanese car.

Strength:

Best looking car in class Best interior (not just in it's class) Manual transmission available in V6 Inside spaciousness Exceptional ride and handling Gas mileage (I get 29 mpg highway and 24 city with a manual transmission V6) It is German

Weakness:

Requires premium fuel

Unlike some other reviewers, I have had no problems with this car, and my dealership experience has been surprisingly good - very helpful, friendly, and gave me a great deal on the car. A few thoughts on the car itself - even though it only has 190 horsepower, it has plenty of low end torque and does not want for power. The ride is excellent for highway cruising and hard driving, especially for a front-wheel drive car. And the interior is much better than anything the Japanese are putting out - this includes my aunt's '02 Lexus LS430... I have nothing but praise for my '03 GLX.

Strength:

Luxury ammenities, great interior and exterior design, very supprtive seats.

Weakness:

Cushy suspension, dash lights on occasion have turnes off, could us 20 more hp.

This is great car for its price. It has allmany features, from power folding mirrors to memory heated seats. So far no problems other that the dash lights occasionally going off. The suspension could be firmer and this car should be more than 190hp. In addition, VW warranty is excellent 4yr or 50k miles. This is a great German car for an attractive price.

CUP HOLDERS!!! (although they changed them in 2001)

So far I love it! Cupholders are worthless though. Beautiful car, beautiful lines, beautiful, well-thought-out interior. It's a V6 5-speed and it moves better than expected. Very solid feel, smooth ride and very quiet! I did purchase an extended 2-year warranty just in case.

Weakness:

Could handle more juice (W8 neat) and a sportier suspension.

Have the FIVE SPEED CLUTCH on a 2003 V6 GLX. The transmission for is definitely not for burger munching crowds. If you had a good shot of espresso, you can make this beast shine. My track record is 0-60 in 6.3 secs, that is before i "changed it". Superb car with distinctly Euro feel precise steering. Now, 4 months later with a Neuspeed chip, Eibach suspension, and Borbet 19", with 4 inch ground clearance i am a cop magnet. Need new tires every few months though :)) HHAHAHA, you convenience store automatic drivers will never know the true thrill of driving. Peace

Strength:

+ Styling + Handles like a smaller, sportier car + Smooth power flow for a turbo + Front seat comfort + Handling, esp in rainy weather. This is the best car I have ever had for driving in rain + Standard radio + 5 speed automatic. Helps highway mileage a lot + Trip computer standard

Weakness:

+ Hesitation in very cold weather. If you lived in NJ this winter you get the idea what I mean by cold. + No in-dash CD changer + Velour seats are very hard to keep clean + Two recalls-coils and shield near right rear tire. A car this well thought out should have none. Then again, BMW and Mercedes cars are not the most reliable either.

I am into the last year of my lease with this car. There is a lot to like about it but VW service is not the equal of what I have had with Honda or Nissan cars. The build quality and driving experience, however, are better. I've thought about switching to a Jetta or GTI since I don't need all the space of this car when my lease ends, but this is the only "true" German VW that has reasonable reliability. The Mexican-built Jettas and Brazilian based GTIs are know to be rattle traps. VW designed a great car, but you have to like cars to appreciate the Passat. If you are expecting to get an "appliance" that is vanilla and trouble free, the Accord is a better choice.

Strength:

Quality interior and space. Soaks up highway miles and gets 24-25 miles per gallon. Great standard features. Rain sensing winshield wipers are great.

Weakness:

Rear seat on 4-motion sedan models don't fold.

My 01 New style Passat over almost 37,000 trouble free miles on it. The only thing I've replaced was a fog light and headlight bulb at 34,000. Other than that, it's just been oil changes. Looks like the best deal is the six cylinder models. I feel comfortable, safe and secure with my V-6 Passat and enjoy it's combination of a smooth, quiet ride and great handling. I am considering the W-8 6 spd as the next car.

Minor Problems

Great car so far. Coil problems- no problem. MIL lamp came on. Car still drove nicely. Took to dealer at my convenience. Fixed same day. MIL lamp came on again. This time computer was sending bad signal??? Fixed in less than 30 minutes. All this happened in first 3 months. Last 6 months have been trouble free. 15k miles so far and despite minor problems at first still would recomend from my experience. Pleasure to drive. V.W. will start replacing coils, bad or not soon. All the talk of the coils on this site seems a little out of wack but maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones.
