Strength:
It is a wonderfully smooth ride, and fun to drive. Too bad it's a piece of crap.
Weakness:
Listed above I bought my second VW thinking they are known for being reliable. Boy was that a big mistake! Nothing but trouble since I bought it at 32K. I have to add at least a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or oil light comes on, all of the electrical components have stopped working (What good are all of the features that come standard on a VW if none of them work!), trouble with mass air flow sensor, to name a few... Just talked to someone who had to replace catalytic converter at 50K! VW will do nothing to fix any of these problems. Sadly, I would be an idiot to buy another VW. Strength:
Loves to be driven. Looks. Handling. Personality.
Weakness:
Not enough time in the day to drive it as much as I would like. Sorry to all those whiners out there, but I have 36,000 miles on my Jetta Wagon and haven't had problem one with it. I love this little car and outside of routine maintenence, it asks for nothing. This car does not have an easy life either. I live in Phoenix, which is a very brutal environment for cars. Hence all the manufacturers' torture tracks out here. I also made my living for four years, driving on the Bavarian Autobahn, so I drive like hell. Full Power. That might be the secret to it all. VW ads say, "Drivers Wanted." Maybe these other Jettas are falling apart, out of boredom. The owners of these sad cars, might be better off trading them in for a Buick. Or just stay there, sitting on the couch, watching cable. |

VW Jetta TDI
Strength:
Fun to drive, when it feels like running.
Weakness:
Extremely poor build quality. Knobs and things simply fall off of their own accord. Where do I start? Not a whole lot has gone right with this car. In addition to little things breaking left and right, my turbo is just blew at less than 37k miles. VW MAY cover repair. Then I'm going to get rid of it. VW has seen the last of me. Build quality.
Weakness:
rough idle when cold. Jetta has been strong. Driving 4000 miles per month. Minimal oil consumption with Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic. Build has been tight. Doesn't seem to like the cold mornings but moves right along after a minute or so of warmup. 5 speed manual is flawless. 2.0 engine is not the fastest in the world but isolates vibration without the worries associated with the turbo. Plenty of around town and highway guts for me, and I own a 450 horsepower 77 Pontiac Firebird! |

Strength:
Efficient fuel consumption.
Weakness:
Poorly engineered and built. Volkswagen needs to do some serious corporate soul searching about the quality, reliability and post purchase customer satisfaction of its products if it wants to stay in business over the long term. Pure crap. Worst car I have ever owned. Everything constantly breaking and being repaired. I will never again buy another Volkswagen. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Good fuel economy. fairly solid car compared to most in its class.
Weakness:
MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR PLASTIC PARTS INCLUDING WINDOW LIFTERS This is my third VW Jetta Diesel and my two previous were great (1986, 1998). My 2001 however has its issues. Everything plastic breaks, i.e. cup holder, glove box hinges, console latch. The cup holder is in the worst place possible. The power windows fall down. Warranty will replace the plasic clips. As for the mechanics of the car, I am currently fighting with VW to replace my second MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. I paid for the first one at 98,000 km and now they have changed the warranty to 115,000 km. I am entitled 9 months after to my money back. However the new sensor with 46,000 km on it is bad now. They say too bad!!! Similar Products Used: 1986 VW JETTA Diesel 1998 VW JETTA Diesel |

The look, the luxury.
Weakness:
The fact that I can't shift into reverse unless I let it sit for about 5 minutes. I love this car EXCEPT when it is cold, it won't let me shift into reverse or any other gear until the car warms up. The dealer told me that is normal. CRAP! How could a brand new car need to be warmed up? What is funny is that sometimes it will do it and sometimes it won't. Cold or not! Other than that I love my Jetta! |

Strength:
Fuel economy and the suprising quiteness for a direct injection diesel motor.Strong, hard working little motor
Weakness:
Cost of parts, cost of add-ons from the dealer. Lousy seat covers that pick up lint, hair and dirt too easily. Should have a better choice of seat materisal Had several VW's in the past, including the old reliable beetle and the VW 412 sedan. Found these cars great. The new Jetta TDI is a great little car, had to replace the turbo within the first year and the mass air flow sensor recently (all under warrenty). No problems with the dealership in getting warranty work done or servicing. Love the ride and the fuel economy, even with the automatic tranny. Could use a boost pressure gauge and could have more room in the back seat. Similar Products Used: Beetles, VW 412 |

Weakness:
interior rattling, ignition coils were defective, cup holder design, interior upholstery. the problems with our jetta have been endless. i think it started with the rattling in the sun/moon roof then we went through a recall but not before all four of our ignition coils went out. we had to have them replaced one by one as they went out because volkswagon wouldn't replace them all at once even though they were defective. we had to actually wait until there was no power in the car as we rattled down the highway before they would repair the car. that happened four times before the problem was adequately repaired. other problems include a horrible cup holder that for some reason the manufacturer designed to sit right in front of the radio making it impossible to see what station you're listening to or what track your cd happens to be playing. the chassis rattled constantly as well as the sun/moon roof cover. |

Everything!! This was my second Jetta! I loved the first it was an 1986 and I drove until 1999 and retired it with close to 400,000 km on it. The 2000 Jetta has been nothing buta problem since I bought it.The turbo is constantly malfunctioning, the mass air flow has had to be replaced. Every time that i turn around it is needing to be taken to the dealer, who are not helpful and rarely listen to the problems. I am totaly disappointed in this car and due to this I will never purchase a VW again. I have even persuaded friends not to purchase them. Similar Products Used: 1986 Jetta Honda Civic |
