Peppy engine. Great seat warmers.

See above. The car was a lemon since the day I signed the lease papers. Thank God I don't actually own this pile. I've suffered through everything from jammed (open, of course- three times!) sunroofs, the side windows falling into the doors of their own accord and mysterious dashboard warning lights at random times. The car seems to be made entirely of plastic. Heaven help you if you happen to run up over one of the concrete stops in the parking lot. When you back up, it WILL rip the entire front plastic off the car and leave it hanging. This has happened so many times, I just keep the (plastic) bumper grates off and keep a star-head driver in the glovebox so I can fix it myself. By the way - that same plastic front end is securely attached to your front inner fender well liners. They don't fare very well either. I just left them of after the third time. Speaking of glovebox - the door (also plastic) is hanging by a thread since the internal guides have snapped. Never even heard of that one before! The locking lug nuts are so flimsy, after the second one stripped out, I got a set of four stock ones from the dealer. In one surprising move - they gave them to me free. The doors leak black tar-like sealant down the rocker panels in warmer weather. A real joy to clean. Oil changes? Jettas require special (read more expensive) paper inserts for the filter. Huh? Avoid this turd at all costs. |

Everything I listed above I am so glad to see I am not the only one with issues. I just dropped my Jetta off AGAIN to the service department today. This is probably the 20th time in 2 1/2 years. Not only did I have to have the radio replaced, I had problems with both driver and passenger window breaking, ignition coil and turbo valve had to be replaced, the door latch stopped working, therefore my alarm does not work, the CD changer only works when it wants to, I had to replace the brakes at 30K and most of all, the service department SUCKS! I would NEVER EVER recommend buying a Jetta and am surprised I'm still seeing new ones on the road. For those that haven't had problems, consider yourselves one in a million because it sounds to me like Jettas are just useless. It's really too bad because I loved this car but it has given me nothing but problems! Don't buy one! |

Strength:
Only the fuel efficiency. 40 city, 50 Hwy
Weakness:
Front Seats are nice looking leather, but on long trips really uncomfortable. Low clearance on front bumper. Problem hanging up on cement parking stall headers. Monsoon sound system needs better positioning of speakers, those in the back door are a joke. Aerodynamics are lacking, when you try to drive with the back windows down, an irritating thumping roar so loud you can't hear each other talk. Weird! Too bad the rear deck spoiler isn't standard, it helps style up the rear view. The notorious cup holder positioning, drips condensation down on your electrical components - not good! Rear seats extremely poor comfort on long rides, an armrest would certainly help but isn't an option. The wheels that are suppose to be upgraded are still ugly, what ever happened to chrome? The cloth material used in the back window mantel, is terrible about catching and holding onto lent. Same as the cloth syle seat coverings. My intentions on purchasing this car, was to have a dependable, exceptinal fuel efficient quality engineered car. BOY WAS I EVER FOOLED!!! Sure the fuel economy from the start was wonderful, 40mpg city and as much as 54 Hwy. But other 'stuff' had started to plague us. The electric mirrors died, the FM portion of the radio died, both repaired while under factory warranty. When complained about the front bumper dragging on parking space headers, dealership said the height specs were correct. My argument was why on earth a car would be designed that was so low you couldn't pull into a head-on parking stall without dragging your front end off. Needless to say, ours got ripped after a few times. Problem being due to the curvature of the bumper it would ride over the cement header without you hearing anything, but when backing up, sounded like you were ripping off the entire front end. I did hear tell of one individual that literally dragged the front bumper off the car in trying to back out of a parking spot. Now that should have given me a heads up about the 'engineering' aspects. You'd think!! But I was so righteous in my fuel efficient, earth friendly, save the planet-mobile, I was blind to those little 'problems'! I truely love the looks & styling in the front view of the Jetta. Very sporty, black leather, moonroof, cool white and all that jazz, but now my husband is wanting to kill me for ever having insisted on buying it. To the tune of nearly $2200, in just the last two months we have been chasing down repairs, from the ever mysterious MIL light or the check engine light as it's commonly known. The service depart has done everything from changing out the Massive Air Flow sensor, that was supposedly plugged. No problem, after 40K to be expected perhaps (cost$686). One week later, MIL on again, and this time though it's the EGR System, so a carbon cleaning and oil change later, problem fixed (cost$367). Only the very next day MIL light comes on again, next time into shop EGR cooler is plugged solid, you would think EGR Valve and EGR cooler would go hand in hand,(cost$646). Tomorrow I pick it up again, two weeks after the last visit, after all the injectors have been replaced,(cost nearly $500). This is really getting old!!! My cute little Jetta is not looking as cute and definitely not dependable anymore. I wonder if buying a Jetta could be grounds for a divorce? Let's hope not. This car was bought new in 2001 and has been treated with kid gloves, services on time, by the dealership. So to have to poke this kind of money into this rig on top of what I origianally paid, isn't tasting to pleasant about now. Needless to say, along with a lot of other folks whose reviews I have read here, Volkswagon will never be spoken here again, as soon as financially possible, we will be trading in this on something I hope can be as fuel efficient as possible, but a hell of a lot more reliable. DEFINITELY WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER VOLKSWAGON!!!!! Similar Products Used: 1980 404 Puegot, diesel, excellent ride, rear wheel drive, should have replaced injectors and kept it!! |

Quality, mechanical, pretty much everything This is the WORST car I have ever owned and it is my 6th. The car was in the shop for 28 days the first month I owned it. It has been in the shop repeatedly ever since for mechanical problems and things are never fixed correctly. Volkswagen doesn't care about it as long as the monthly payments are made. Piece of crap, can't wait to get rid of it and will NEVER buy a VW again. Also warn everyone I know what a piece it is. none yet. If you want good cupholders buy a Dodge minivan. Incredible car, best handling at 70+ mph of any car I have owned. 5 speed manual gets 50 mpg. Lots of torque when you need it at lower RPMs, amazing how you never need to downshift on the hills or to pass. Only routine maintainence, I am at 20,000 miles and no problems. I run synthetic oil and pay close attention to shift points. You can learn a lot from the TDI website about these cars. Similar Products Used: Nissan sentra, Toyota Camry |

V6 power. Gas mileage.
Weakness:
Crappy windows. Sucky warranty. (only 2 year/24000 when i bought it) Not a bad car, but I have had some problems with it. Like the review after this one, the windows kept falling into the doors. This happened a total of 7 times! The dealer said it was a faulty platic crank inside. However, it just kept on braking. And heres another funny story. One day I was washing my car and i looking down on the hood to notice that the paint started to chip off for no reason other than the water pressure. Dealer didn't have a problem fixing it. Also, the cupholders might be in the worst place ever. If you prefer not to see your stereo or changing CDs, buy a Jetta. I didnt think that it would be a problem, but it is. Also, the ashtray in the back broke. Not much legroom in the back either. I hope you dont have tall friends. The trunk is a good size though. Also, the V6 is great. Nice power and excellent gas milage. 30+ miles on the highway. I wouldn't buy another one. If you want a much better German car, spend the extra cash and get an AUDI A4 or BMW. Good luck in your hunting. Similar Products Used: none |

-quality -build -customer service -VW mechanics -and everything else that makes a car worth more then the metal it's made out of Ok, I have already written a review. To quickly recap, I have had a re-accuring problem that two different dealerships have tried to fix 7 times (as well as numerous other problems). Even after 7 times, my car is still busted. I filed a claim with the Canadian Motor Vehicle Arbitration Plan and that is where my last review left off. Well I went to the arbitration and wasted a half a day off work, and the arbitrators decision was that my problem was “slight” and didn’t warrant VW buying back the vehicle. My point, it doesn’t matter how “slight” it is, it’s a manufacturing defect that they are unable to repair. Conclusion, CAMVAP is a total waste of time unless your car explodes into itty bitty pieces. Any long story short, my Jetta has been nothing but a colossal piece of crap since 6 months after I drove it off the lot. Their mechanics, in an attempt to fix all of my problems, actually broke things on my car and never actually fixed the problem I brought it in for. To date I count 9 thing wrong with my car. A clunk from my front end, my driver seat moves on it’s own, my brakes squeal (and they don’t need replacing), my driver power window button needs to be held down for atleast 30 seconds before it will open (VW mechanic broke that along with the door switch), my dash rattles constantly, there is another mysterious rattle somewhere else in the cabin, my CD player doesn’t work all the time, and sometimes my window comes off the track and makes a horrible clunk when it goes all the way down along with rattling when it’s open (VW mechanic broke that too), and my engine runs rough even after I had there $200 tune up. Conclusion, the Jetta is HUGE piece of crap, worst car I have owned. Not to mention VW’s atrocious mechanics and customer service. This car has been the bane of my existence. I hate it, I hate driving it, and I half way expect it to fall apart on the road. So I took a $5,000 loss and traded that hunk of Mexican garbage in before I had to start paying for all the repairs. SAVE YOURSELF a lot of trouble and anguish, never ever ever ever buy a Jetta! (especially a used one with no warranty) CRAP! Great acceleration. Heated seats. Like the moonroof.
Weakness:
ESP button failed and nearly caused us an accident. Chrome is peeling off the door because they installed it wrong and it got caught when I opened the door. Poor customer service and satisfaction. Expensive labor. Expensive parts. Little leg room in the back seats for adults. Heaters are very poor/weak. Cannot put fog lights in unless I change the headlights/module which will cost $1000+. Hate the rims. They look so bad. Tell me about the service people being dicks and the manager being even a bigger dick. And that is not a good thing. When I bought the car, they were very pleasant, but suddenly, after I drove off the lot with it, it seems they have taken off their "grandmother's clothing" and revealed their true wolf's nature. I hadn't even had the car for 2 weeks when I opened the rear passenger door on the driver’s side and because they had installed the chrome piece incorrectly, it got caught and damaged the inside of the driver door while it bent backwards. I brought it into VW immediately and they said that the damage was done by a child or prankster and would not warranty it. I was like, are you kidding me? Well, I was choked. I nearly fed the service guy the &*!#ing chrome piece. They said it would cost $800 to fix. Then there was the ESP button that failed and we nearly got into an accident. The people in service said it was a small incident. What? We nearly wiped out because of it! No signs of concern from them. Then finally, there was a rock that got stuck in between the brake pad and brake disc and it cost me $130 to fix!!! Honda did it for my Honda Civic for FREE!!! And I didn’t even buy the car from them! Service sucks. Too bad there are service people that are dragging VW through the mud! Weakness:
keeping black paint clean is a chore tight rear seat even for my 5 yr old people always want you to drive kids at red lights in 80's camaros want to race Took 2 moths to get a new owners manual from VW. Repair manuals hard to find for VR6. Limited aftermarket accessories selection Velour cloth seats absolutely attract lint and hair I had wanted a VR6 for years since they were introduced. My cousin has a Passat GLX 4-motion and swore the VR6 Jetta and GTI were outstanding vehicles both in performance and features. Reading what a large number of owners are reporting is a little scary but so far in 6 months and 7000 miles I have no complaints. Besides oil changes and a set of new spark plugs (both because I just thought it was time) I have spent no money on unscheduled maintenance. I bought the car used with 35000 miles and had them install new brake pads/rotors and a new starter as the old one was making a funky noise. I love my car and want to take great care of her but at the same time the car always begs to be driven...really driven. I optioned for the extended warranty and crossed my fingers that I was getting a good car. So far the car has performs excellent. I hope that I don't jinx myself and start having problems. As with all cars preventitive maintenance is required. I have had both Japanese and American cars break down on me, so to characterize a cars reliability based soley on the country of manufacture is rediculous. Similar Products Used: too many to name |
