Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Quality of build. Fun to drive!!!

Weakness:

Takes supreme gas. Your uncle can't work on it- GO TO THE DEALER!!! and get a warranty- better yet, BUY FROM CARMAX!!!

The Turbo Jetta I bought about 6 months ago has been one of the most fun and best made cars I've driven. People who have problems with the transmission have only driven the automatic, which I have heard has problems in not only the VW, but also the Audi (which is just an overpriced VW). The people complaining about the check engine light are probably not putting the right gas in the car (all German cars require 91 octane). It is a small price to pay for a car of this quality. The turbo model is quicker than most cars on the road, and still gets 27 mi/gal around the city! The car is well-made, but must be well-maintained as well. I got the warranty from CarMax, which I have used once to shut off a check engine light and repair an oxygen sensor and some tubes, but everything else is great!

Strength:

none - do not buy this car.

Weakness:

You will have major electrical problems with this car. You will not be met with sympathy from any VW people. You will be expected to pay for these defects with your hard-earned money with no help from them. You will be overcharged for this car by dealers who probably won't give you a warranty. Do not buy this car.

Do not buy a Jetta. Do not trust the VW sales people. I was overcharged for my used Jetta when I bought it two years ago and I was told it was under warranty, but then when I read the fine print, it was not under warranty. And since EVERYTHING has gone wrong with this car since the day I drove it off the lot, I was screwed. Here's the list of things that happened within the first 6 months of owning the car (which only had 30,000 mi on it at the time): passenger airbags shot out for NO reason when I was stopped at a red light, high whistling noise when I accelerate, car locks itself for no reason even when the keys are just sitting on the seat and the car is off - it just locks (have had keys locked in car several times), when I drive the car constantly beeps at me really loud with all sorts of red messages showing on the dash and it beeps throughout the duration of all my trips, the blinkers and hazards don't work, the CD changer in the back broke for no reason, the odomoter and all the stuff on the dash doesn't work (like the thermometer - I don't know what else is up there since I have no need to look at it anymore since it's all broken). So here's the worst part: when I took it to the dealers to tell them that my airbags went out for no reason - they tried to tell me that I had had an accident because there was "accident data" stored in the car. What the heck is that? So, since I have NEVER been in an accident in my LIFE in ANY car (knock on wood) I asked for a copy of this "accident data" and it turned out to be a computer generated packet of meaningless numbers. So VW was basically trying to convince me that in order for the airbags to come out I must've been in an accident. Um, not the case. So they said I'd have to pay $3500 to replace all the airbags since you can't just replace the ones that came out. Oh, also my glove compartment just fell apart one day, too (I forgot). So then I tried to complain to the Consumer Department of CA for cars or whatever it's called and it's really hard to fight a huge corp like VW when you have no money so they closed my case and I was stuck with a crappy car that I'd paid twice as much for than I should have because of lying sales people. So, please, take my advice and do not buy a Volkswagon. And if you must buy a VW, DO NOT BUY A JETTA.

I just bought a 2001 jetta and it is a nightmare. I've had nothing but problems. When I first bought the car the check engine light came on before i got to my house. then after they fixed it about a week later the check engine light came on for the brake lights going out and i couldnt get it out of park so they had to have it towed to the dealership. then my power windows stopped working 2 time in a row so i had to go to get those fixed. then the transmission wouldnt come out of second gear so i had to have it towed once again and they said that the reason why the transmission was messed up because i put a an aftermarket cd player in my car and when i took the dash out i unplugged something went to the transmission and i just started laughing in his face and told him to fix it. so while they were fixing it i had to go through hell to talk them into giving me a loaner car. it took them about a week to fix it and it ran ok for like a week. then it started messing up again a little bit. about a month later the transmission went again and i had to have it towed back to the dealership again and this time they said they wont give me a loaner car because they said that the relationship between the service departmant and my family isnt good. so now i'm so pissed because they have my car and they wont give me a loaner car and they are talking crap about my family. so now i have no way to get back and forth to work at all. so if anyone tries to tell you to buy a volkswagon dont listen to them because its been nothing but hell. VOLKSWAGON SUCKS!!!! AND SO DO THE SALESMEN THAT WORK AT VOLKSWAGON!!!!!!! if anybody has any advice on what i should do then please email me at Extremejokerz@yahoo.com

In Australia the Jetta is called the Bora (as per Europe). This is my second Bora and I couldn't be happier. Thankfully, both Boras were German-built and I have had no major problems with these cars. My first Bora had a 2.3L V5 engine with auto transmission. While it was a very comfortable and reliable everyday driver, I started longing for a stick-shift with a bit more power. The Bora V6 4 Motion has a 2.8L V6 with a 6-speed manual transmission and an all wheel drive system that is based on the Audi Quattro system. All of these features add up to a drive that is always exciting and enjoyable. The engine and gear box are perfectly mated. The German build quality is exceptional.

Weakness:

Too much to mention. I have a stack of service receipts to show the number of times and things that I've had to get fixed. Made in Mexico. Car is like a cheap, badly assembled pinata

I have to agree with the majority of posts here that the VW Jetta is a big piece of crap. There's been nothing but problems ever since my lousy 2-year warranty expired. To name a few (some of which are common problems): power windows on both the driver and front passenger sides falling down (total of 3 times), cup holder breaking, lever used to fold down the back seat breaking, trunk latch breaking, strange clunking noise during turns while backing up, rattly interior, and lately, the metal flap covering the gas tank opening breaking. This last problem prevents me from filling up on gas. As it turns out, I need to get the gas tank replaced because of this flap. I was hoping that I could simply replace the neck of the gas tank, but, alas, the whole gas tank has gotta go. Not to mention that it's been four days since I took the car in and the gas tank has not yet arrived. I called VW of America Customer Care to file a complaint, but they could care less since I took the car to an independent mechanic as opposed to one of their "charge an arm and a leg for labor" dealers. So I've been stuck without a car for the past four days, and by the looks of it, doesn't look like I'll be getting it fixed today. Once this problem is resolved, I'm getting a new car and swearing off VWs the rest of my life! Should've listened to a friend of mine (who was a past VW owner) and not purchased this cursed vehicle!!

-Great power from the V6 -ride is smooth and comfortable -very reliable -quiet!

Weakness:

-plastic parts inside are not durable -replacement parts cost many dollas

I bought this car new in March 2000. Overall it's been a great car. Aside from scheduled maintenance it's been to the dealer only once for a faulty MAF sensor. The dealer misdiagnosed the problem the first time and cost me $200 (and the MAF sensor was $350, but later refunded when the warranty was extended by VW). I have been very underwhelmed by the cheapness of the interior plastic bits. The glovebox hinge, the armrest latch (apparently very common), all cupholders, rear seatback release all broke in the first 50k miles. I must emphasize how much the cupholders suck. A friend just bought a 2004 Jetta wagon and they seem to have addressed this shortcoming. The rubber-feel coating on some of the controls is not very durable. The instrument cluster dimmer stopped working (who cares) and the driver-side heated seat switch flakes out 2-3% of the time (I wish it had an 'on' light). The stereo is great, but the CD player is a giant pile of crap. My biggest pet peeve with it being that you can't start the car with a disc playing or it needs to be reset by switching to the radio or tape then switching back to cd or it just keeps spinning the disc with no sound output. Mechanically this car's been a star. We drive it cross-country annually in the mountains and desert and it's been unflappable. My _only_ complaint with the engine is that sometimes it seems to have a bit of intermittant valve clatter at around 2600-3000 rpm. I have no idea if this affects performance, but it seems fine. Other than that it's the quietest engine of any vehicle I've ever driven or owned. Very refined. Car rides great, especially on long trips. We've done a few 18-hour 1200 mile stints and it's very comfortable. It has a lot of body roll for such a small car, though. The newer models with the sport package may be better, but it wasn't offered for the 2000 MY.

Engine, Transmisson, Too Many Recalls, VWoA Customer is VERY poor, too much interior sounds when hitting small bumps on the roads, interior smells like melted crayons (since day 1) total LEMON CAR

car is a total lemon! within the first 5K miles, i did nothing by take my car back and forth to the dealership for "repairs" not service. as more and more miles came in, the more and more problems the car had (although it was covered under warranty). the problems were minor, but some were major. not only that, i received about 2 or 3 notices about recalls.. and when i did a search on my car, i found 2 other recalls that i was never notified..totally not normal for a car that is not more than 3 years old with a mileage of 41K. recently, the engine failed. the dealership and Volkswagen of America (VWoA) will NOT put the car under the 100K miles/10yr. powertrain warranty. the local inspectors said that the car has no signs of neglect nor abuse, but still, they are not honoring my warranty that i had paid for along with the car! VWoA is known to "not work up to their words." you can find more negative info's about VWoA on www.vwvortex.com and other car enthusiast websites. i always changed my oil and oil filter every 3K miles and did other maintenance on the car. but the car broke. a mechanic from a shop whos been working on VW's for more than 20 years now told me that the problem with my car is for sure a factory defect. but VWoA just likes to scam their customers.

There are no strengths to this car. BIG POS. If you want to buy the car for $14500 and then put about $10,000 into it then this is the car for you.

Weakness:

Everything BUMPER 2 BUMPER. This car is a nightmare. Dont buy a vw service is very poor at dealer. Everytime I take the car into get the oil changed there is always about 3000-4000 dollars in things that i need to get fixed on the car. Needless to say I am trading it in on a 2001 BMW 3-series. At least they have 100,000 miles certified bumper to bumper waranty. And vw wonders why they lost 58% of car sales in the last year. Because if they dont back there cars no one else will. Jettas are crap. Two of my friends on Jettas and they are falling appart too.

This is by far the worst car I have ever had. Many mechanical problems went wrong with this car. The first week I had the car the windows went out, catalitic converter burnt up, sunroof had to be replaced and many other problem all within the first week. The other problems were that i had the transmission replaced at 72,000 miles and it cost $4700 to fix. cupholders both front and rear were replaced 3 times. Both front seats wouldnt move back and forth so they were fixed. Trunk would shut all the way so they dash light stays on. Check engine light is always on. Windsheild wiper motor went out. CD player repaird. And its weird but this car drinks oil it doesnt have a leak it just likes it. Flip out key broke and had to buy another one it was about a $100 for one. Airbag light is on and has been on since the car went out of waranty after only 24,000 miles thats VW certified for you. I am going back to Lexus, Toyota and BMW.

Here is the scoop on VW. This is the review you want to read. Let me start by saying I don't have a Jetta but a Golf. I am posting under Jetta because they are basically the same car and share the same platform. With that said.... I bought a 2002 Golf GLS in the summer of 2001. I did not research newer VWs before purchasing. I have learned a lot since then. First of all, most Golfs and Jettas are assembled in Mexico. It is very hard to find one that is not. Most of the engines are made in Mexico and transmitions in Argentina. Read this part very carefully: IF YOUR GOING TO BUY A VW, MAKE SURE IT WAS BUILT 100% IN GERMANY (if you can find one) If your going to buy a used one make sure the VIN number starts with WVW instead of either 3VW or 9VW. Ever wonder why Passats are so much more reliable than Golf/Jetta/Beetle? All Passats are built in Germany. Now I am not trying to beat on VW. RELIABILITY ASIDE this is a great car. But it simply is not reliable. The interior is that of which you'd find in a $40,000+ car. Controls and displays are fantastic. The engine and ride are top-notch. It has tons of standard features that are great. The 115 hp base engine is responsive but paired with the automatic it's noisy and relatively thirsty. That's the second mistake i made when buying this car. If you are going to get one, get the GTI or GLI VR6. Forget the 1.8T...they have too many problems with the turbo. Now here is a list of things that have happened to my Golf in under 23,000 miles: -Radio fuse blew a few times -Trunk won't open -Transmition acts up at low speeds -Center console latch snapped off -Bumper to bumper rattles..everything seems loose Remember: If you are going to get a VW, get either a Passat or a Golf/Jetta that was built in Germany. Check the VIN number. Avoid 1.8Ts and Beetles at all costs. VWs are great cars you just have to find the right one.
