Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

Strength:

-50mpg, go TDI!!!! -smooth luxurious ride -high safety ratings; 6 airbags!! -comfortable on long trips (5-8 hours) -handles great in all weather conditions -no problems starting in 10 degree weather -no engine block heater required -large trunk space -heated seats -lots of low end-torque! I can pull stumps out of the ground with the TDI -5 speed all the way -front wheel drive -plenty of leg room; I am 6'1" and have lots of leg space AND plenty of head room

Weakness:

-Rides a little rough until it warms up in cold weather which is expected from a diesel engine. -There is very little space under front seats for those who drop money, food, & pens. You will need to stop the car and retrieve lost items. -Diesel fuel can be s smelly & messy; use gloves when pumping fuel. -everything is electronic meaning if there is a problem, it may be expensive to fix. Only time will tell. -CD stereo; they could've equiped car w/ better CD player w/ more options -back seating can be cramped for adults

Great car! Fun to drive, getting approx. 50mpg (5 speed). I travel constantly and the TDI rides and handles great! You can't beat the great mileage either. Heated seats work great in cold weather and interior dash very ergonomically functional. I've put 20,000 miles on this car in 7 months with problems. These cars love to be driven!!!

Strength:

Beautiful to look at - great ride (when it feels like it).

Weakness:

Reliability.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Jetta. When it's working well, all is love. Unfortunately, it's not all love. I've had it for about 20 months - and it gave no problems for the first year - but since February 03: Window fell in, engine coils replaced (3 TIMES!), a/c went mid-summer (I LIVE IN SOUTH FLORIDA - IT'S HOT), engine fans replaced. Everytime this happens the warranty covers it (I'm at 42-43K) - but how about the major inconvenience? My dealer in Naples is wonderful - but how about lost time from work? Transportation to and from the dealer? If they provide a ride, you have to stand around in 90 degree heat waiting for them, not to mention, they are only open Monday - Friday, 8-5 (WORK HOURS). I have had to go places and been unable to due to this car. I previously had a 2001 Jetta, which was stolen FROM THE DEALER when dropped off for an oil change. This car gave me no problems - but then again - I didn't get to keep it long. I don't care how much it's going to cost me - I'm trading it in. I'm not driving across the Everglades in an unreliable car - let the 'gators bit somebody else in the ass. VW already bit me in the ass.

Weakness:

finding a good euro repair and maintainance place Finding aftermarket parts

Ive had my car since it was brand new and had absolutly no problems with it till the engine hit 100,000, then it was just rutine matainence just like any over car at 1000,000 miles. I adore my car, this is the third car ive owned and its by far the best ive owned. Nissan pick up I owned was decent but not enough power and versatility. The crystler was a piece I dont even want to talk about that car. Sounds like most owners dont take care of there jetta very well, you treat it good it will treat you good. I highly recommend this car to anyone trying to find a good value for a good price.

The only good thing about this car is the heated seats. Wait the dash is pretty cool too. BUT the novelty of it does not outway everything else.

Weakness:

Did you read my review?! GOD, how does VW stay in business.

I purchased my my 1st VW at the end of August. Having been a standard transmission only girl, I thought I might like a brake so I went w/automatic. Got it home, Hated it. Traded it in for the 5spd ($800-later) Loved it for a few hundred miles. Since then nothing but problems. Clutch started making noise at 700 miles, took it was told that it was the "throw out bearing" and not to worry "it shouldnt be too much of a problem" well I made them take the car. The returned it to me telling me it was a lose motor mount. Got the car home, same noise started again. Did I mention they also tried playing it off like it was "normal clutch noise"?! So I decided to take it to another dealer, who heard the noise and confirmed it was NOT normal. They went in and found that the noise was coming from the transmission. So they just replaced it instead of trying to "fix"it. Cool, I thought my problems where over. It only took 15 miles after picking it up for the noise to start up again. At this point the car had 2015 miles on it. I bought this car because my 2000 Hyundai was "getting old" pretty said that after 3yrs, 2 car accidents, and 49k miles it drove way better then this piece I now own. When I confronted the dealership they told me there was nothing they were gonna do for me. Then I went in w/my mother he suddenly started singing a different toon. Well it has been a week now. And all the man does is lie. Buying this car is one of the BIGGEST mistakes of my life. And after reading these reviews I see probably one of the biggest mistakes for anyone who buys these hunks of &^%$! The dealers are nice when your there looking to buy, after that they are shady and useless. I dont have to much faith in the men they call mechanics either. This is a nightmare. And I dont see how without losing thousands of dollars I can get out of it anytime soon. This is my first and LAST VW! I dont think I would take one if it was given to me!

No similiar products. My 1st car was an 84 Saab with 200k miles on it. The performance of my NEW VW resembles that of my Saab. Pretty sad! My 2000 Hyundai was wonderful. I find myself considering trading this in for a Hyundai. If something doesnt give Im thinking my sanity will be worth the couple of thousand dollars I will lose!

Strength:

interior design and build quality; very fuel efficient, and pretty fun to drive, for a little four door economy car. the car has a lot of features for the price. I like having the radio and cruise controls on the steering wheel.

Weakness:

the automatic transmission is without a doubt the biggest weakness in this car; it has very rough upshifts, and ocassionally, a loud bang as it goes from first to second gear. the VW service dept at the dealership can't find anything wrong with it; of course, it never does this when i take it in for service. the reception on the am radio is very bad; i'm told i need a new antenna. seems like a minor point, but i never heard of an antenna going bad before. The back seat is very cramped. I wish there were more "storage cubbies", for things like cell phones and cd's, etc.

This is my first VW; I had heard about lots of people that had bad experiences, but went in with an open mind. I love the fact that this car FEELS like a more expensive car; the switches and controls all have a very high quality feel; coupled with the textured, high-quality plastics in the dash and door panels, give the whole thing a very nice feel. I've had the car for almost 14 months now, and have already racked up over 53,000 miles. I've had no major problems, but the fact is some of the cheaper (in price and "feel") vehicles I've owned in the past have run many, many more miles with NO problems.....

The turbo diesel gas mileage is great.

Weakness:

Poor materials and workmanship. Cramped seating. Not very comfortable to ride in for any extended length of time.

I see that some people have had the same problems I have had. The workmanship is very poor. The trunk latch has broken, the hinge to the glove compartment has broken, rear view mirror detached, very large spring appeared on the floor under the front passenger seat (haven't figured this one out yet), glow plugs went out around 50k miles, brake pads had to be replaced around 50k miles, and a piece of plastic molding covering track the seats are on broke off.

Weakness:

Pricey Maint. I have had problems with service at times, usually because of bad service reps, if you don't like the one your dealing with, don't be afraid to ask for his boss.

The car has had its share of problems, but with anything in todays world you have to pay to keep things running good. I belive its just human mature to complain about things. Overall I love the car. My wife just totaled the car yesterday and I can thank VW for building a safe car. Car got hit in the front right side just forward of the front right wheel, police report says head on. The other vehicle was a 92 Buick Roadmaster (BIG CAR) speed of over 50 mph. All damage was in front engine compartment, everything from the front doors back looks new... The drivers compartment held up great. It got on the average of 45 mpg both city/highway, ran smooth, plenty of power, just remember its a diesl. Anyways I'm now looking at getting another Jetta TDI

Strength:

Heated leather seats are comfortable, car is stylish, drives well, large trunk space, Monsoon sound is great.

Weakness:

Engine is underpowered, suspention is weak, not a lot of room in the back seat, breaks wear out fast - expensive to replace! Oil changes are expensive due to cylinder type oil filter. Latch on center column armrest has broken too many times to count.

The car operates fine, dealing with the VW dealer for repairs and maintenance is a nightmare. After one accident the car is literally falling apart. One year after it was "fixed" the rear trunk latch broke ($400), the rear brakes wore out quickly($400), instument lights don't work ($200), glove compartment hinge broke ($500) and the engine mounts broke off at the engine block ($10,000). At least the windows operate properly (unlike many other Jettas).

Surprised at all the bad reviews...i have had 98,000+ trouble free miles with my Jetta...best car i have had to date. Working in outside sales I abuse my cars, and the Jetta just keeps going. The only Problem I have ever had was stripping the threads on the oil plug when doing an oil change. I was first quoted $400 for a new oil pan...thought that was ridiculously $$$$ and found a dealer that redrilled the hole and put in a new plug for $100. This is the 2nd VW I have owned, had a '93 Golf that went 220,000 miles with few problems....cant say enough good things about my VW experience!
