Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

Volkswagen Jetta (2005 - 2010) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

The fifth generation Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 5 January 2005. One major change to the Mk5 is the introduction of the first multi-link independent rear suspension in a VW Jetta.

Styling reflects a new direction for the Volkswagen brand, with a new chrome front grille, first seen on the Golf Mk5 R32, which has since spread to other Volkswagen models.

The Jetta available in the U.S., is powered by a 2.5 litre 5-cylinder 20-valve engine in most trims. In North America, the Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine was not offered in five U.S. states when the Mark 5 Jetta was introduced, due to the tight emission standards promulgated by the California Air Resources Board. In addition to California, four other states adopted the more stringent California standards.

-Gas mileage -Acceleration -styling -amazing

Weakness:

-a little bit of rust underneath drivers door

This was my dads old car....i love it, i wouldn't take any other car. I've replaced the shocks, fuel filter and some other little stuff and my muffler is starting to go but those are the only things and the car has got over 100,000 miles on it. It idles perfectly smoothly like brand new and the heat pumps out for the winter. The sunroof is great for summer and the 2.0 engine puts out a lot of torque and i have yet to find another sedan that's better. Having it in a 5-speed is great and i will never own an automatic again. The acceleration is great and has no lack of power. For all those other people saying how much VW's suck...you gotta be lying because this is the best car ever. Great gas mileage, it's practical, and it's fast. I love VW's Oh yeah, my dad has a new 2003 Jetta and my mom's got a '97 Passat and both those are great too :)

Strength:

Big inside. Bright and clear. Lots of Torque! Great mileage (realistically you get 44 mpg)

Weakness:

Lousy cup holders. Roof rack bars better from third party. Back seat has limited leg room.

Great Car. The anti-SUV. Handles great. Not a single problem in 24,000. A couple of design flaws, see below.

Strength:

Very high quality feel, both exterior in interior. No rattles or squeks even at 18000 miles

Weakness:

Very little legroom in rear. When placing our infant seat in the rear the front seat must be all the way forward. In this position only the smallest/shortest person could sit in the front.

Found that the Wagon's are built in Germany vs.'s Mexico for the sedans. Also TDI's (diesels) are built in Germany. This swayed my decision to purchase because Consumer Reports seems to report that reliability is suspect. Mine has been very reliable, has required no unscheduled service. I attribute this to being a German built vehicle.

Strength:

great acceleration, quick handling, nice interior, good alarm, nothing under the hood broke, always started(even on the coldest mornings), by the way, VW's should not be warmed up, letting them idle causes excessive wear(read your owners manual).

Weakness:

yes, it makes a funny noise when starting the engine but it never affected anything. understeers with lots of body roll, not great in snow, ABS break light came on when it got hot but never noticed a diminished braking capacity. sorry everyone else's cars sucked.

Overall, car was a joy to own. I can't understand all the whining about this car. i put 35K miles on this car in a year and a half. it has a total mileage around 110K. recently the drivers side lock broke because it's the only way to lock the doors and has been overused. i rolled this car 3 days ago and walked away. i guess i got a lucky break because this car was great.

Strength:

The car used to be zippy when I bought it. The body and interior is nice looking

Weakness:

Everything I wrote above and I am getting awful gas mileage now even on the highways.

This is the worst car, my biggest mistake was buying one. I have had it for almost 4 years and my engine light has come on 7 times. This car is very unreliable and is in the shop all the time. I never know whether or not it is going to start-up and drive properly each day. This car is especially bad in the winter, it takes a long time to warm up. I am ready to sell this car for one made in Japan I no longer want a German car.

Strength:

Good pickup, good gas mileage.

Weakness:

Read above review for running list of weaknesses. Moral of the story-save yourself countless dollars and grief by never buying a VW.

This was my dream car when i bought it-it turned into an absolute nightmare. I honestly never knew in the mornings whether the car would start or not. In one and a half years i spent 5000 on repairs (almost as much as it cost to buy the car). I fixed the air conditioner, replaced the battery twice, replaced all wheel bearings and re-aligned the car countless times, replaced muffler and entire exhaust system, catalytic converter replaced, replaced all belts, water pump and thermostatat (but the car continued to overheat even after the water pump had been replaced), replaced brakes twice. The driver's door lock completely fell out of the door once, the cigarette lighter won't stay in and pops out like a rocket, the car shakes uncontrolably as if it wants to stall when it is first started. The car has in fact stalled in the middle of an intersection on two occasions, with the dealership claiming to have no idea why that happened. If it's raining, the car simply won't start. In the end i had to count my losses and get rid of it while it was still worth a bit of money.

Weakness:

all things replaced in 2 years:driver seat, windows, shift knob, door handle, sunroof (leaked), carpets (mildew), heat shield, radio (5 TIMES)

The JETTA STINKS! I have returned it to the shop more than 12 times in 2 years to repair 9 things! TO that VW told me basically...tough...it was only 12 days. HORRIBLE car and a company who doesn't care about their customer or product...

Zippy, handles great, A great car to drive

Weakness:

Brakes needed replacing too soon, emission workshop light going on and off, and you cannot fit a rearfacing carseat for a baby in the back seat without sliding the passenger seat all the way up.

I love this car-but I have the same complaints as other people have expressed. Brakes, emission workshop light going on and off, and you cannot fit a rearfacing carseat for a baby in the back seat without sliding the passenger seat all the way up. The widshield in my car and my dads 2000 passat cracked shortly after purchase.

Strength:

Great looking car - inside and out. VR6 has lots of power. Blue-lit instrument panel is impressive.

Weakness:

MAINTENANCE -- I thought my car was unique until I read all the other reviews of Jetta. All Jetta's from 1995 - 2002 are now on Consumer Reports "do not buy" list and for good reason. I've had a ton of electrical problems and replaced the air flow sensor, the O2 sensor, the catylitic convertor and had cam shaft work done. My engine light has come on 6 times in the last year, to the tune of about $1500 out of my pocket. At one point, it didn't start when it was raining. Today, my CD player and temperature control panel doesn't work and my engine light came on again. I've gone to every dealership in my area for repairs and not been impressed with any of them. They rarely pay attention to what I describe as the problem, they replace something and then when that doesn't fix it, they say "oh you never told us you had an acceleration problem/engine noise/trouble starting." Some have just told me outright that these are routine problems. Others just keep tinkering. I've had it. Do NOT buy a Jetta.

I bought this car because I fell in love with the body style. When I first got it, I LOVED it. It was zippy, cute and reliable. But I've had a slew of nasty maintenance problems, concerns about the dealerships I've had to deal with for repairs and will be trading my car for either a Lexus or Acura.

Strength:

tdi is economical (expect around 40 mpg).

Weakness:

construction quality is poor. I noticed on consumer reports that of every compact car sold in the us, it ranked dead last in terms of quality.

unfortunately it has had a lot of problems. the instrument console went out (an issue that seems common) the window motor went out (class action law suit against vw, which vw lost and extended warrantee on window as result), motor turbo charger needed to be replaced, latch for arm rest. It's been in the shop about 7 times in 14 months. I'm very afraid of the costs I'm going to incur after the car runs out of warrantee. might be better to look for something else now.
