Volkswagen GTI (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

2010 saw the introduction of the sixth generation GTI that delivered a slick combination of sports car-like precision and tuned driving excitement in a multi-purpose hatchback design.

Power mill of the VW GTI is a 2.0L 16-valve DOHC turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder engine with FSI direct fuel injection that produces 200 HP at 5,700 rpm and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque from 1,800 all the way to 5,000 rpm. With the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the GTI reaches 0-60 in 6.8 seconds. EPA estimates rate fuel economy at 31 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg for city driving.

The GTI is available with an optional automatic Direct-Shift Gearbox® transmission which gets it to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds from a standstill. The 2010 GTI’s fuel economy is improved when equipped with the DSG transmission, which ranks an EPA-estimated 33 mpg in highway driving, and 24 mpg in city driving.

Model Reviewed: GTI 1.8 Turbo

Strength:

Where do I start? The smooth, powerful little engine. Great gas mileage. Sharp good looks -- GTIs should always be black. The car's trim size is great, but its increase in room over my previous car (96 PGT) makes my wife very happy. I like all the features that came with the car -- side curtain airbags were a great plus. I love the interior at night. I love the heated seats. I love how cool the sunroof works. This car is so totally cool.

Weakness:

Uhhhh... I don't drive it as much as I want to...

I wrote a review about my '86, and this car is on another level. The sophistication is mind-boggling, but it still has the performance expected of a GTI. It looks like I'll be keeping this baby for a long time.

Strength:

Let me tell you the primary strength of this car. The engine, the VR6 is not only a spectacular engine, it also gets respect. When I mention i purchased a GTI, people ask me turbo? I reply nope, VR6 and the common response is " OOOHH NICE". Right off the bat this car is a screamer and a looker. I have the upgraded rims and a spectacular black paint job, the car looks magnificent. The sound system is great and all the interior immedities are compareable to a car in a higher class.

Weakness:

2 yr warranty, i had to go for the extended.

Read my lips " This car will whip your a$$."

Strength:

handels like a race car(when lowered). 16v screams at 3500rpms and pulls
like its turbo charged. beautiful/aggressive styling. NO CHROME!!! just blx trim. clothseats are still perfect w/200k+ original trans, eng, clutch, head. redlined everyday, everyshift! change oil once ayear at 15k. always abusing the car. runs like a bat out of hell.

Weakness:

headliner-suxs, speedometer on all A2's sux and odometers also. door seals let in h20 (mess!). plastic breaks easily (treat it gently). very little torq. However HP makes up for it.when buying one check: cvs, fuel pumps, alt, starters, and timing belt changes. these areas aren't bad designs
just the problem areas. Distributor leaks oil easily but still works.

bought w/ 150k blew blue smoke still does. it had a timeing belt break and the shop only replaced the belt the valves must be slightly bent cause it always smokes. i ported n polished the head (1st time ever tried) with a $30 drimel tool , 6hours work, just cleaned up those great *Flowing 1.8 heads. and was simply amazed at the difference(also has filter, exha*Ust)
made my own short shift and rebuilt shifter...smooth fast tight easy but takes alittle time. sold it to a friend be*Cause didn't want to do the work on it of struts, clutch, headliner, paint, windshield crac*K,and a *Hand full of minor t*Hings. he abs*Olutely loved the beat up 16v, wickedly quick!.he just bought a old dirty rough ur-quattro I fou*N*D for $350.00 *And decided that was a better inve*Stment to sink cash in to. So now i'm tempted to buy back the 16v( it would be soooo much fun) more than my 95' vr6 gti worlds apart . the vr6 is faster barely.one car length up to 120?
no soul, soft refined boring. however lowered n supercharged then it might be a GTI. but the wife drives it and does not want me to touch it.Like i did w/ her cabby 88' 3" drop 16"mims loud exhuast, white face gauges momo
crap here n there sway n stress bars, rear discs,g60 11" binders, throttle body cam and experimental audi 5000 turbo bolted to it just cut off the extra runners. no work on the exterior or interior. She calls it "the crapriolet". It sure looks like it but it runs great. WHY DIDN'T VW MAKE THE 2.0 16V THE BASE MOTOR ON THE A3'S? THEY ALREADY HAD IT DEVELOPED INSTEAD OF DEVELOPING THE CROSSFLOW HEAD WASTE OF MONEY AND MY TIME.

Strength:

extremly fun to drive. Very fast. Corners great. Inconspicous. Exellent exceleration. Loves to run 100 + with ease.

Weakness:

Price.

I have taken 4.7 Mustang GT's, Accura Integra's, and 1.8t Audi's off the line . The VR6 sounds great over 3500 rpm's. Too new to give a reliabilty .
No one can tell it's not a regular Golf looking at the front end. It's a real sleeper. You should buy this car if you like driving.

Strength:

The engine and the overall quality of assembly.

Weakness:

It gets you to where you're goin' almost too fast. You don't get much time to enjoy the drive.

I wanted a car that wasn't a carbon copy of everybody else driving down the road. Price wasn't really a matter but quality and "bang for the buck" was. After investigating and taking an extensive test drive I was sold. So I got me one. I had to wait a while cuz' I wanted the GLX with the 17" wheel option. It's Rave Green and fully loaded. I got the factory installed lowering springs put on and it was all over. IT IS NOW A SCARY VEHICLE!!! Let me begin from the outside in. The color is unique and can attract maybe a little too much attention (got to be careful around the law). The wheel and tire combination coupled with the lowering springs not only enhances it's stance but virtually elliminates the old problem of mushiness through the turns. Pay the extra money for these options it's definately worth it. The doors close with a solid thud that makes you appreciate German engineering when getting in or getting out of the car. The interior appointments is so tight and strikingly beautiful (leather everywhere) you could swear it was assembled in Stuttgardt. But the best part is the lighting appointments. Try this. Show your friends the car at night, because when you flick the light switch on you gotta check out the look on their faces when they first see the glowing indigo gauges with red needles and accents. The chicks (or guys) love it. Turn on the Monsoon stereo system and I doubt if the thought of buying an aftermarket sound system will ever enter your mind. Start it up and that VR6 purrs like a sleeping kitten. But don't be fooled. Ease off the clutch and we're talkin' torque for days, I mean SERIOUS TORQUE throughout the powerband. With a supurb V6 growl. Third gear response is more than enough for passing. This thing will smoke everything in it's class and hang with most cars in classes above it. I get 0-60 in the mid 6's and that gets me on the freeway just the way I like it. So all in all, I'm so happy with this car I'm considering moving further away from work so I can stay in it longer. But my wife ain't havin' it. So if you like gettin' more than what you pay for in all aspects GO GET ONE. It's a $24,000 car that's easily worth $32,000. Just don't get the green one.

I have to go to bed some day.

Nice car very nice. I love this thing have about 2000 miles on it now and love it.
Very fun to drive. Moonsone sound system rocks, could use two tens for added full
sound. Crazy power, Every time i go to race i get all excited and i get the car going
so i don't leave my tires all over the road and then i punch it and i end up leaving my
tires on the road. planning to go with 17 inch rims with wider tires and lowering to
minimize the traction lose. Haven't even chipped it yet and the tires don't stay on the
road that is saying something. The turbo rules it feels like it is always spooled. I
recommend this cat to any one that loves to drive. Keep in mind if you bye one
make sure that you check behind the front rotors. I had this gangling noise and i had
my Brother check it out. (www.statusautoservice.com VW specialist.) turns out
some one from the factory got cocky and stock a little rock behind it. The rock was
sitting in the spot around the bolt for the CV joint. I laughed when it fell out thought
something was broken. Any way said enough great car!

Smooth, strong VR6 engine. Everything comes standard. (I only added the CD changer.)

Weakness:

Can't believe VW can get away with only a 2 year bumper-to-bumper warranty. Take a look around VW! Terrible stock tires for such a high performing car. Miniature cup holders.

If you want a practical, sporty car with loads of torque and you still have to pay the mortgage, look no further.

Lots of power in any gear but definitely best above 3000 RPM. Squirts through traffic like a dream and you can actually park the thing in tight spots.

Loaded to the gills with standard options that BMW wants you to pay extra for! So far, I haven't had a single problem requiring a dealer visit (bought the car at the tail-end of it's generation).

Strength:

I call my VR6 "The Beast". It is purely stock. The only car that has beaten me from a stop light was a Corvette (he did smoke me, though). Mustang 5.0s can fuggedaboutit. This car is a dream to manuever in traffic and will go 110 all day long. Steering and handling get kinda light over 120, though, so be (very) careful. MPG 28 at 60, 26.5 at 75, 24.5 at 95. Informal 93 in quarter mile.

Weakness:

Has not been a reliable as other VWs (mine was assembled in Mexico). Some problems with the alarm system, cruise control. Alternator died, too. I think the paint qualifies as lousy. Acid rain eats it quickly.

I love my VR6. The only thing it wouldn't hold was my new 55" TV. Guest riders new to VWs are amazed. Their initial "Oh this is really nice!" changes to startled amazement when I shift into 3rd at 67mph and their heads slam back on the headrests. After 100 (and still accelerating!) they get really quiet. Hee-hee. Great fun, pedal to the metal, all of that, PLUS comfort and utility.
