Strength:

Gas milage,52 miles per Canadian gallon.
Seating is higher and there for more comfortable.
Automatic shifts at just the right times.
Good power for the size of car.

Weakness:

No light in the ashtray.

This is a great little car. The seating I feel is more like the van position, (high). The clear view of the road is another strong point. Inside feels very roomy, large trunk, fits two big suitcase's with room to spare.

Strength:

gas mileage. gas mileage. gas mileage. this car gets great gas mileage. the car is deceptively spacious with loads of interior space. it's a simple car with all the basics in the right place. did i mention the gas mileage?

Weakness:

more trunk space would be nice. that's really the only sacrifice i made when i got rid of my old corolla.

low cost. great gas mileage. for the money, i don't think any car in it's class offers everything the echo does.

compared to my old corolla, this car is much more fun to drive. it has more personality than the corolla. more modern & upbeat.

Strength:

tons of storage compartments, GAS MILEAGE, small enough to squeeze in almost any parking place (perfect city car), rides very smooth, and is very roomy for a small car. I also like how if you have a drink in the drink holders, it doesn't block any of the controls, which are place very convenient and easy to find, although is is kind of hard to get used to the speedometer being in the middle of the dash.

Weakness:

cruise control is not an option, although it can be added aftermarket. It is definately not a car for a speed demon, but it is more than sufficient for an average driver, but it does have very good pick up for an economy car. Thats really all I can think of.

I love this car! It gets great gas mileage and has so many compartments and storage places inside. The trunk is very large and it is very roomy on the inside, with alot of headroom, especially considering how small the car looks on the outside. It rides very smooth and quite on the highway, at least compared to the other cars I have owned, i.e., Saturn Sedan (not too bad), Suzuki Sidekick 4-door (piece of crap), Volkswagen Cabriolet (bigger piece of crap), and a Kia Sportage (biggest piece of crap). I was dissapointed when I was first looking at them because they did not come with power windows, so I did some researching on the internet and found that power windows was an option, you just had to special order it. I ordered one fully loaded, with power windows, remote keyless entry, antilock brakes, and everything else except the CD changer. It was definately worth the two month wait. I will be getting a pop up sunroof installed shortly. I am very, very happy with it.

This is the best car I have owned, and I will definately continue to buy Toyotas from now on. No more Suzukis, Kias, Volkswagens, or Saturns!

Strength:

Gas mileage, unique look, good stereo sound

Weakness:

The suspension--the ride seems rather bumpy.

I bought my used Echo recently with 18,000 miles. After looking around for a reliable, fun used car, I kept coming back to the Echo. I am so sick of all the boring, normal lookalike cars everyone drives so the Echo was perfect. People who don't like the Echo's shape are just conformists who will never understand avant garde art, let alone unique auto design. It had all I wanted: auto, CD, keyless entry, 4door, in black. I totally reccommend it to students who need to save $$$. I am thrilled that the windows are roll-up because automatic windows always break and can trap you in the car after a bad accident. I'm planning a summer full of road trips! See you at Burning Man!

SERIOUS NOISE FLAW beware!!!..

I loved this car.....at first,

but,

after It had 200 miles on it,
(Remember, this is a brand new car.....)

it started making a high pitched whine after I had it out on the open hi-way for over 45 minutes.

It now makes a noise like a hydrolic drill only not as loud,
whenever I am doing hi-way driving for more then an hour.

The noise is continuous and gets louder as you drive. it is also worse on hot days.

The Dealer put in a new transmission - into my NEW car - but it did not fix the problem.

I dont know what if anything Toyota plans to do, but I am very unhappy with their overall response to this problem.

Toyota did tell me - after the fact - that other consumers have complained about the noise.

I am still waiting to hear for them, in the mean time, I have to use ear plugs if I drive for more then an hour..

I should have bought a civic.

Strength:

Great gas mileage. Its a tough little car, that does very well in snow. Extremely effortless to drive. Plus the headlights are awesome!

Weakness:

After a year and a half (a lot of every day city driving) and 17000 miles not a single problem. And from experiences with other Toyota models, I expect no problems either.

I would recommend this car to anyone...but I think I am content with having this unique and great car, while the majority of everyone else keeps having their negative opinions about the style, small engine and many of the other things I've heard people do not like about it.

Strength:

I highly recomend this car. Good in snow and great on gas. The front seats are very comfortable. Peppy with the manual five speed trans. Steering is very quick. You can't buy a better car for the money.

Weakness:

Front seat does not slide back far enough for tall drivers but is fine for me ( 5'10"). I had the high end sound system but didn't like it. Replaced it after a week.

After 19,000 miles I still like this car. The first time I saw an Echo I thought it was the ugliest car I had ever seen. I fully intended on buying a new car but not this one. I test drove an Echo just for the hell of it and with no intention of buying one. I think I had test driven just about every car on the market and ended up buying this ugly little car. People laugh at it sometimes but I love driving it. For the money you can't beat it. I drove this car on a five hundred mile trip and got 43mpg at speeds up to 80 mph. Take the extra thirteen thousand dollars you would have spent on that suv and put it in the bank for your kids education. This is all the car you really need.

Strength:

Very Fast.
Sound System is awesome for factory installation.
Very manueverable.
Save mega $$$$$ on gas.
Awesome for doing 360's on ice and snow in parking lots.

Weakness:

No clock in the 2000 model.
The back end is up too high.
Shakes in the wind.

This car is awesome. I drive in New York City and the Thruway at very high speeds and I am able to manuever effectivly and safely while I weave in and out of lanes. And because the car is so small, fast, and manueverable, I had a bunch of close calls, that a normal car wouldn't have been able to get out of. I am also able to squeeze and make it through very tight spaces. Although its not the car that I really want, it is afforadable and I'll miss it when I get my Audi.

Model Reviewed: Echo 4dr 5spd

Strength:

A perky quirky car complete with Toyota's reliability, safety, and economy ... Great interior storage, distinctive look, fantastic gas mileage, great safety features ... Fun to drive, quick from 0-40 ... Good sized trunk for a car its size.

Weakness:

Price tag not big enough to be prestigious, opening between trunk and rear seat is limited, the "jump" from 40-70 mph won't snap your head back, no power windows to be found, rear seat leg room is probably only good for people under 5'8".

Looking for an affordable, reliable, safe car with a bit of perky, quirky personality to it? Buy the Echo. If you need leather interior and a high price tag to make you feel special, look elsewhere.

The Echo's center mounted dashboard is not distracting as I thought it might be and the engine is peppier than I excpected. All in all, the Echo is a great commuter car or a great first time buyer's car. It's a perfect second car for a two-car family, especially if the first car is a really nice van that everyone can be comfy in on a family camping trip across country.

An interesting tid bit is that the Echo was the 2000 Car of the Year in Europe -- it sells as the Vitz and Yaris in other countries. Kind of makes one feel a bit cosmopolitan as one darts about America in the European car of the year ...

Similar Products Used:

Similar to Civic, but with more personality and a lower cost. Not as much personality as a Beetle, but a much bigger trunk and four doors make it better for small families. Seems to be better in safety numbers than a Neon or Sunfire.
