Toyota Avalon (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

Toyota Avalon (2010 and older) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

Tthe 2010 Toyota Avalon may still be the best value in its class. Inside its spacious cabin, the Avalon can feel like a luxury car. Its upscale interior and quiet, well-cushioned ride wouldn't be out of place in the Lexus lineup. The Avalon's up-front purchase price is also higher than some similar cars, but large car prices have been rising quickly in recent years, and its price tag no longer stands out much. The Avalon offers a lot for the money -- and is more reliable and fuel-efficient than many competitors, allowing buyers to recoup some of that cost.

All trims are equipped with a standard 3.5-liter, V6, 268-horsepower engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 28-mpg on the highway. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

Strength:

Reputation - bought this one because of my 2000 which was an excellent car. Ooops!
Acceleration - excellent

Weakness:

Steering - no feedback, feels like a video game.
Brakes - not linear, feel like pads or rotors are glazed -- but they aren't.
Transmission - Does not want to upshift, you can feel it downshift as you slow.
Tip-in on accelerator too aggressive, leads to jerky low-speed acceleration.
Seating - leather is much harder than my 2000 Avalon.
Instruments - Silly blue screen should be un-necessary & is distracting.

Not as good as my 2000 Avalon.
This car is a wonderful freeway cruiser, at 60-80, it hits its stride, it's quiet & strong, with good gas mileage.
Around town, that's not it's forte.

Strength:

Headlights; backup camera has very helpful green and red lines to mark sides and rear hazards. The mirrors on the sunshades have useful dimmer switch on mirror lights.

Weakness:

This is my fourth Avalon ('96, '00, "07 and'11) and the cost cutting is obvious in comparison with the '07 model. The radio has white small fonts and CANNOT be read in bright sunlight. The radio antenna is not as powerful in pulling in FM and AM stations--probably by design to promote satellite radio.

The Home-Link (garage door opener) has 50% of the range previously available on the '07 model.

The compass is NOT dependable and has had to be re-calibrated every other day.

The power outlets are DOWN in the auxiliary box and console box, making it difficult to plug in a GPS or radar detector.

Finally, the shifting of gears is not smooth and hopefully can be adjusted at first servicing.

While Toyota has cut costs or was not stringent enough on specifications for radio, antenna, Home-Link and compass, this continues to be the value sedan. Sit in a GS Lexus and then an Avalon Limited and you'll see the same interior parts. Why pay thousands more?

Strength:

Very quiet, firm handling, well laid out controls

Weakness:

Seats could be softer

We've had our Avalon for less than a month but have put enough miles on to make a review of our own. After reading the reviews in here prior to our purchase, I felt I had the information I needed to fully check the car out while doing the test drive and negotiations with the dealer. Our Avalon does not have the navigation system, so that poor review I have been reading about did not apply to our purchase.

This car is a very quiet car to ride in. We test drove it on what has probably been our windiest spring day yet, and both my wife and I felt right away that this car was far quieter than what we were used to driving, which was a 2004 Buick Lesabre. Night and day difference, and our Buick was pretty pleasant to drive also. I have since did a comparison with my father's 2008 Deville, and I think this Avalon is so close in comparison with noise that it could be called a draw.

The shifting issues some of you have brought up are not at all apparent with our Avalon. This car, with its 6 speed automatic transmission, shifts so smooth you don't even feel it. I like how the car downshifts as you slow down. Nice feature.

The only negative, if I had to say there is one, is the seats. We have the leather interior, which seems to be very nice quality, although both my wife and I feel it could be plusher, or softer to sit in. The memory seat function is awesome, especially with my wife being several inches shorter than I am.

Overall, my impressions of this car is OUTSTANDING. I love this car. I think it will be a car we will want to drive and own for several years. We are both just 50, and this car is perfect for that age group. Younger folks may find it too plain or not sporty enough, but for us it is the ticket.

Strength:

Good gas mileage--good styling--no other good qualities

Weakness:

Faulty computer which is affected by wrong manifold installation. Noisy engine, bad surging transmission, wind noise, road noise, rough riding, rattles, parts of inside wheel well fell off, jerky shifting & defective accelerator. Car lurches when starting, can hardly hear radio for engine noise. Driver and passengers must yell to communicate. The noise keeps getting worse. Water-pump failed. Trunk lid hard to shut. Battery had to be replaced early on. All of which leads to my wife and I never having one mile of pleasurable driving from this poor excuse of a car.

I am 82 years old and have owned cars since 1940. Have never had a car as bad as my 2007 Avalon. I purchased my first Camry in 1985 and drove it for over two hundred and thirty thousand miles without a single problem. Since then, I have had 4 Camrys and 3 Avalons. The 2001 was the best car I've ever owned, 2007 is the worst car I've owned. I have had my 2007 Avalon to the dealer 12 times, trying to find what made the car rattle like a bucket of bolts. They are still working on it. Unless all deficiencies are fixed, I will never consider another Toyota, and will so testify to family members and friends.Toyota has gone from the very top of my list, to the very bottom. All my past I took my car to the dealer 12 times. They do their best but Central Offices turn a deaf ear. All my previous Toyotas were wonderful. As I am writing this, they are working on the rattles again and they gave me a Corolla for a loaner. It is many times quieter than my 2007 Avalon, and rides and shifts more quietly. If I could recapture my 2001 Avalon in the condition it was when I traded, I would gladly trade straight across.

I have never owned a car "similar" to this, but I have owned Plymouths, DeSotos, Fords, Lincoln, Pontiacs and Volkswagons. All of which would put the 2007 Avalon to Shame. It has more rattles than the second-hand Modle A I drove to high school. In summary, this car is a lemon from one end to the other. It is a disgrace to Toyota.

Weakness:

Not quite a Lexus but close.

Best car for the money. Borderline luxury car with great gas mileage, huge interior and smooth quite ride. Like most toyota's this one is bulletproof. Don't expect many visits to the shop with this model. Only gripe is tires that came on the car don't last.

Very comfortable for big and tall people, Quite interior, Back seats recline, 268 horse power V-6 engine, MPG 24city & 32highway. Great sounding stereo system.

Weakness:

NONE

I bought this car new with 124 miles on the odometer. I had to take it easy on it for the first 1000 miles to break in the engine, but after that it preformed better then expected. I purchased the Avalon Touring because it was the only model that had a sports tuned suspension and with 268 horse power to the front and Tiptronic transmission; I put it to the test. It is truly an affordable luxury sedan and Toyota's Flag Ship. It is missing some features like BlueTooth and an auxiliary sound input, but other then that, with this affordable luxury sedan you will get the most bang for your buck and MPG at 24 in the city and 32 on the highway, it out preforms most all American Hybrid cars still till this day!!!

Strength:

technology is good except for the navigation system...radio speakers could be better too.

Weakness:

Noisy...very, very noisy and flimsy. a large 18 wheeler passing by will make it shake.

This car was sold to me as a luxury car and it does have all the technology but once I took it on the freeway it was a different story. I have never owned a noisier car. The engine noise, tire noise, road noise and wind noise all combine to make a loud humming wind tunnel sound that makes it impossible to talk and listen to music at the same time. After three months it has also started to rattle. This is by far the worst car I have ever owned. What a scam!

Horrible under steer
Standard tires are a accident waiting to happen in wet conditions - no traction, hydroplane common
What is with all the trap doors - radio, cassette, cup holders, tray?????

I would not even consider this vehicle again. We also own a Murano which is far and away superior in absolutely every way....obviously not the same class but come on Toyota make the Avalon for the main stream driver and not the week-end fedora wearing Great Grand-Pa!!!
