Strength:
Engine... more thaan enough power. Full time AWD is fantastic. No muss no fuss, just goes. Heat is quick on frosty mornings. Seating is most comfortable. Ten hours at a clip are no problem. This model has the adjustment for the small of your back and the seats are still firm and supportive after 12 years of my fat butt sitting on them.
Weakness:
Body is beginning to show some rust thru at the door corners. at 185K and 12 years, not bad. Solid trustworty car. Bought it with 80K miles on it, have replaced clutch, tires, brakes, plugs, couple of sensors (knock and oxy) and now have 185K miles. Still a solid easy running machine. Uses NO oil between 5K oil changes. 25-30 MPG with the tires inflated right. This car brought me safely home the night of the big blizzard here in PA in 96. I live up a series of healthy hills, one that nobody wants to walk up. Tires were mediocre Dunlop somethings with a lot of wear on them. I ended up plowing the 2 feet of snow on the driveway (again, up and steep) with the car. Next morning it was buried to the windows and frozen to the ground, but I got home in one piece. Car will NOT slip unless you are being stupid or playing games like jumping on the gas in a sharp turn. Then the rear end will start to come around. Maintain it and respect it (it isn''t a tank and doesn''t have 2 feet of clearance) and it will bring you home thru most anything. Similar Products Used: 87 Subaru and my wifes 99 Outback. |

Legacy L Wagon
Strength:
Powerful 4CYL, , AWD, Excellent adverse weather handling, Roomy and comfortable, great for family
Weakness:
Road and wind noise, interior quality and ride not up to Honda or Toyota standards My new job was forcing me to drive 100 miles per day just making the trip to and from. I wanted a roomy mid-sized vehicle with a lot of utility (for the dog, etc.) and a very reliable track record. Saftey was also a concern. I found all of that in the Legacy L Wagon. At purchase it had a little over 20K miles and I''ve already put another 14K on it. So far it has been great. I like the AWD a lot and the car responds wonderfully in wet weather and icy conditions. The 2.5L 165HP 4CYL engine is very strong although you pay in MPG''s. I drive mostly highway miles and average around 25MPG which is not bad, but a bit high for a 4CYL, however acceptable given the power. The ride leaves something to be desired but it handles very well. I liken the ride to some of the more "harsh" european sedans with a mix of suv thrown into it. Road and wind noise are a bit higher than most in its class but the benefits greatly outweighed this for me. Although I don''t think that it would be too difficult for Subaru to work a little in that area. The Legacy is much roomier than most mid-sized cars and has tons of headroom. I am 6''1" and still have lots left to spare. Rear legroom even behind a tall driver is very nice. My knees don''t even touch the back of the drivers seat (try that in a toyota!). I''ve been in Camry''s and Accords and feel a bit cramped, but not in the Legacy. With the 2000 model being a newly remodeled year there have been a few mistakes, mainly with the interior and the brakes are a little soft/squishy. I''ve read that Subaru had a series of units that went out with a smaller master cylinder that caused this feel, although they claim it doesn''t affect saftey. I can tell my reaction time with braking is a little bit slower than I would like but I''ll tell you those antilock brakes work incredibly. If you want the utility without having to buy a huge gas guzzling mini van or suv, the Subaru Legacy is a really good buy. All-wheel-drive is great.
Weakness:
Stereo died very early on. This is our second Suburu Legacy. First one was destroyed in a weird roll over crash on a badly graded gravel road. This model has 160K miles. We put 120K on it in the last 7 years. It still runs great! Similar Products Used: 1990 Suburu Legacy. |

Subaru Legacy L Wagon
Strength:
Versatility; All Wheel Drive; ABS; Nice Styling; Available with Manual Transmission; Good Handling; Not too big - not too small - just right.
Weakness:
Fuel Economy leaves a lot to be desired; The dash mounted cup holder obstructs the radio and HVAC controls when deployed. I wanted to find a mid-sized vehicle that could haul 4 adults comfortably, got reasonably good fuel economy, had 4wd for trips to snow country, had a manual transmission, and could handle the twisty mountain roads in the Santa Cruz mountains of California. The Subaru Legacy wagon was the obvious choice. When traveling to the Sierras in a snowstorm, the Legacy is allowed to pass without chains. With the rear seats down, I can haul four full 30-gallon Rubbermaid trash cans. I drive aggressively on Highway 9, and the Legacy handles like no SUV ever could. My biggest complaint is that I am a little disappointed with the fuel economy. I was hoping to find a car that got around 30 mpg. This thirsty girl gets around 23 mpg in town and 27 on the highway. For that kind of gas mileage, I would expect a lot more power than the 2.2L engine generates. The only problem I have had in 85,000 miles was a faulty alternator. It died at 30,000 miles, and was replace by Subaru for free. I feel that this was a fluke, and not a real fault of the car. I would buy another Legacy wagon in an instant, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking for a practical, reliable, safe, family-friendly car that is fun to drive, and has plenty of cargo room. Cold a/c that has stood the test of time Engine remains strong, even at 140000 miles Resists rust after all these years...
Weakness:
Somewhat plasticy interior, poor exterior styling This car was bought with 40000 miles on it and seemed brand-new. It really is a good car and holds up well. Subaru can make some good cars when they try (the legacy was the turning point in the company''s line up). It has the space of a sedan twice it''s price and an engine meant to last, unlike ford''s fix-or-repair-daily syndrome. Similar Products Used: First of it''s kind |

Strength:
Dependability; versatility/room; handling; mileage. A lot of car for the money.
Weakness:
Could use 30-40 more hp; the 2.5 engine is a bit anemic when you need the power. A rear cargo door opener on the dash would have been a nice feature. This is my second Legacy Wagon. First was a 3yr leased ''98. I chose to buy another Legacy after the expire in 2001. A solid dependable, very cost-effective wagon, and you can''t beat the awd when it counts. Legacy is a better deal than the Outback; same basic car/engine but handles better because it''s lower to the ground. I needed an allpurpose, dependable, small wagon to pick up/drop off my daughter''s college stuff and this fits the bill perfectly. I would buy another one if this one wears out. Strength:
AWD is excellent and virtually bullet-proof. 4 wheel-disc bakes are very effective. Great value. Excellent reliability even at very high miles.
Weakness:
Soft suspension. Sluggish five-speed tranny. Slightly heavy clutch. This is the first Subaru I have owned (6 previous Hondas), and I''m sold on the product. This car has all the things that I look for in a vehicle, which is, first and foremost, solid reliability. The interior is well constructed and ergonomically correct. The upholstry has held up remarkably well for a ten-year-old car with virtually no signs of wear. At 140,000 miles, the engine is very quiet, runs strong, and uses no oil - also just passed DEQ with flying colors. The AWD is seamless and extremely effective in all conditions - under extreme cornering, ass end will come around if you lift off throttle ( unlike most FWD). The car also has an impressive list of features for the price, I especially like the auto-up feature on the power windows ( none of my Hondas had that). Trunk is remarkably big for a car of this size. The only complaint I can think of is that the five-speed does not like to be rushed between gears (unlike the tap-shift of any Honda), and clutch offers more resistance and requires more travel than I''m used to in an import. Handling is average, soft suspension gives a little more body roll than I would like, the compromise is that this allows for a very nice freeway ride. In all, this is a very good car and a great value that promises years of solid reliability - THUMBS UP Similar Products Used: Honda Accords (4) Honda Civic (2) |

Strength:
Incredibly reliable. Up to 149,000 miles and still plugging away. No problems with the engine; Hardly any work done on it other than regular oil changes and regular maintenance.
Weakness:
Little ''buggy'' when it comes to the interior -- locks have all broken, and the automatic window just stopped working. Also some of the paint has begun to chip off. I have owned my Subaru for over 10 years. It is extremely reliable and I don''t think I could go back to driving a car without all wheel drive. I feel safe in this car. I used to be nervous about driving in the snow, but the Subaru has cured me of that. With the price of cars these days, I feel strongly that I got a great deal for my money. Legacy GT Ltd
Strength:
Excellent Handling, well optioned for the price, nice interior, superior awd engineering. Styling is strong.
Weakness:
Could use some more HP (please, Subaru, bring the turbo engineering from the WRX and overseas Legacy to the US!!!). Undercoating can get on the exhaust (a common initial complaint I understand) and smell for the first 10K+ miles. This is our 7th Subaru. They are bullet-proof cars that are superior when the weather turns inclement. The new Legacy GT Ltd is a real improvement in past years as it relates to handling and overall fee (interior and exterior). Performance from the 2.5l is acceptable overall (good low-end useable torque), but could use the added boost of a turbo similar to the Impreza WRX to be a world-class competitor, going head-to-head with the Audi A6''s and the like. For the price range, there really isn''t anything else on the market that can compete. Solid engineering, excellent longevity (are you listening, Detroit????), and practical value makes for a happy owner. Strength:
Power and looks. Strong and well constructed.
Weakness:
Quickly dated interior, heavy drinker It is a great car, for one it has more agressive looks than the facelift 1992 model and its style has not dated, aprt from the interior. It has a responsive engine that loves to get up and go, although fuel consumption can be a bit off putting to give it beans all the time. It has large sized boot and comfortably fits four large adults. It is a fun car to drive and rewards the driver if it is pushed. It is the sort of car that you can tinker around town in or if youwant to boot it its got the goods. A great all round car Similar Products Used: None, I owner a Corolla FX-GT before hand. |
