Gas mileage: I averaged 40 to 45 mpg! Low maintenance: As I said $1000 for the life of the car.
Weakness:
None I bought my first saturn from my brother. He bought the car new in 1991. I purchased it for $3300 with 115,000 miles on it. I recently sold it after the dealer said it would need a new engine soon. I sold it with 250,000 miles on it! Total repair bills for the entire life of the car (including my brother's bills):$1000 The car was absolutly the best vehicle I've ever had, and I'm looking for a replacement. The 5 speed with a DOHC...I beat a toyota corolla S :) so it's not too slow, 6 cup holders, keyless entry, inexpensive, thought I would hate a 4 door but it comes in handy!
Weakness:
the air never seems to turn completely off even when the thing says Off, The windows fog up easily, the pink coolant...It's too expensive (not that the car needed more) but over time after neing heated and cooled so many times, it turns into an acid that supposivly will eat out the head gaskits and the radiator! Take the crap out of there as soon as your waranty will let you! I bought the car from a used car lot, the previous owner had left his information in the car so my father (helping me shop)looked him up in the phone book and called him and asked him if we should buy the car. At 3 years old the car only had 41000 miles on it... which is really not bad at all. When we called the previous owner he explained to us that he had leased the car and he never had a problem with it, the only reason he didn't chose to buy it at the end of his lease was he was disabled and he wanted a new car with more room... I am 5'3 so room is the least of my worries. Although I have not had the car very long I am expecting good luck with it. I am a GM fan and have great faith in the company not to mention my best friend has a SC2 which she bought brand new in 2001 and has yet to have a problem with (other than getting in a car accident with another car that hit a deer breaking a chip in her transmition and causing body damage...but the transmition was under waranty). Cold AC! Pretty decent power with the 5-speed. bouncy comfort ride. Looks good forever with plastic body, but I'd still rather have all metal thank you.
Weakness:
noisy Car! power steering pumps are plain noisy after 100k in all these SL models. Interior pieces fall off just by touching them.. very cheap!.. Put a little more effort into making a better Shifter! shifter has 3 inches of play before engaging in gears. why is everyone Blowing Clutches!? I have 170k on the orginal clutch still (Yeah it Chatters, but still works fine). Sounds to me Like you people are simply driving the cars way to rough. Yes they are VERY un-refined cars, noisy, squeeks.. but I can't complain.. everything works 100% in this car, drives straight on the highway and best of all.. still looks new. But My next car will be a Honda! They don't compare..everything stays tight in a Honda for 300k miles. |

Strength:
*Peppy engine, especially with the 5 speed *Better styling than the post 95 models (opinion) *Fantastic Plastic body panels *Attractive "geartooth" alloy wheels *Reliable and cheap to fix when it does break
Weakness:
*headroom if you're tall *rear seat legroom *annoying automatic seatbelt system *could be considered noisy to some people, but that's what stereos are for. I did a ton of comparisons of every small car in my price range (which was about $3000). The Saturn consistently met what I was looking for, so I found one. When I found my sparkling dark blue 92 SL2 with a manual transmission and 92,000 miles. I knew I had to have it, and now I do and I dont regret it at all. It's a spunky little car with good handling, reliability, and comfort. It's perfect for a person my size (i'm about 5'7") and has enough room for my uses. The only problem with the car is that the power door locks do not work and I cant find out why. That however, doesn't really bother me. This is my second car, and compared to my previous car, the refinement level is 1000x better, even though people say Saturns are crude. They may very well be, but i guess it really all depends on what kind of vehicle you're coming from. Similar Products Used: 88 Volkswagen Golf GL |

Great mileage. I have 155,000 miles and love my car. Other than your basic 3,000 mile oil change and 30,000 standard maintenance I have had no problems with my car. My sister has purchased one and my mother is on her second. This is a great car. |

At least the body does'nt rust.
Weakness:
Everything mechanical! I'm only happy I did'nt purchase this vehicle! It was driven by a 70 year old Grandmother, who spent a small fortune on repairs, until she was no longer able to drive. It is another G.M. piece of crap. You are held hostage to the dealership for major parts. Which are majorly expensive and the labor overpriced. At 54000 city driven miles, it rattles, groans etc. like a car with 154000 miles. If do don't inheirit a Saturn, go buy a Honda or Toyota! Before my daughter totalled it (repairable, but the insurance adjuster was too lazy to authorize reapir) my 1994 Civic EX with 95000 miles ran like a top. It was "tight" with no rattles, groans etc. and every thing worked. I'm thinking of trading this Saturn very soon on a used Honda or Toyota. SUPER gas mileage-32mi/gal Low Maintenance required Reliable No dents!!! I love Saturns doors and hoods b/c they don't dent!
Weakness:
No power steering. STINKS going up hills on the highway. You pretty much always have to downshift on any extended hill. Slow acceleration. Extremely tight steering in cold weather. If you get hit in the front or rear, you will have to replace the bumper. It's very flimsy. 142,456 miles later, the car is still running well. It ran perfectly till last year when I had to put $1,000 into it for spark plugs, brake pads, and a few other engine things b/c it was shaking at any speed above 40. If you are looking for a car with very low maintenance, this is it. What a precious thing it has been to me. Similar Products Used: 1988 Chevy Corsica 150,000 mi. |

Control. I'm not talking about racing here, I mean control on uneven pavement and traffic conditions when you really need it. You won't be thrown out of your seat.
Weakness:
ok, the seats could be a little wider. I've seen enough Saturn bashing! I researched for 2 months before deciding on this 2000 sl2. Nearly every other car in this price range had more vibration and noise, including the Honda Civic! So enough already about Saturn being unrefined. No problems so far in 3 years of use. In Tallahasse, FL, we have some major roads in terrible condition. I have driven this car into horribly deep potholes and cut up pavement that they leave unmarked at night. I was sure that I had ruined the front end, but the technician said that there is no damage. These cars are extremely tough. At 65 mph, on uneven pavement, I have momentarily removed my hands from the wheel (no traffic), and the car continued straight as an arrow. This is the most underrated car in U.S. auto history. |

everything. i bought this car at $1000 with 155000 miles on it. the engine leaking all over, the trans grinding in some gears (making loud noises) the clutch burned, leaking coolant, the car a complete mess. the dealer tells me it only needs a clutch, and being the honest type i am, i bought the peace of crap. i invested about $4000 in parts and labor within about 8 months. i replaced the engine and trans with a 95' engine, new head, 2 clutches, and many, many more! i encourage anybody looking to buy this car, NOT TO!!! especially if it has high mileage like mine. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUY AN OLDER SATURN MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT HAVE HIGH MILEAGE!!!!!!!!!! Similar Products Used: (first car, worst car) |

Strength:
Great gas mileage 30mpg. Good power. Saturn service dept is great. One of the main reasons we got another saturn. Plastic body panels are excellent.
Weakness:
Trans started shifting hard at around 50000 miles. Had to have it worked on and again later. Lucky I had a extended warrenty. Also had to have 2 power window motors replaced. Gas gauge also went bad. Bought the car with 6000 miles on it in 96. Just traded it in last year on new Saturn Vue. Similar Products Used: Pontiac Sunfire - good, gas mileage only 24mpg. Also had trans problem. |
