Strength:

manual transmission is fun to drive; looks halfway decent; no problems; cheap

Weakness:

It''s made of plastic

This car has worked great for us. We picked up a lease from a friend in 2000 and so far (2002) no problems at all. (We just read all the reviews posted here though and are getting a little scared to keep it). I find this car very fun to drive and it was very cheap to lease. We have no options except a stereo, so I guess there was less to break down, but nothing rattled, broke, leaked or fell off of it. All I know about cars comes from things that broke on my former ones, so I''m no expert on what other people should buy. But thanks to this car, I have learned absolutely nothing about autorepairs for two years.

Weakness:

Noisey Burns about 1 quart every 3000

I purchased the vehicle new and now have 130,000 miles. I drive extremly hard on my vehicles and this is the only car I''ve owned that has not required internal engine or trans repairs. I maintain this vehicle no differently than any of my old ones. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone.

Weakness:

Besides everything mentioned above, it has now started to rust around the windows. The biggest weakness is that it now is worth practically nothing, and I''m stuck with it.

We purchased the car in 1998 with 23,000 miles. Before we reached 60,000 miles we had to replace the head gasket, break pads, rotors, dome light(it fell off), struts, battery, tires, and spark plugs. It has also begun to burn oil at a rapid rate. The windows were also never sealed properly, and I get wet everytime it rains or I go through a carwash. This is by far the worst car that I''ve ever owned. I''ll never buy a Saturn agian

GREAT gas mileage, nice looking, comfortable

Weakness:

NOTHING

This is a wonderful car and I have never had any problems with it. And to all of you saying that this car is a piece of crap and that it has been nothing but problems, maybe you should have bought it when it was new so you can stop blaming the car and maybe blame the original owners.

Strength:

Great gas miliage! On a road trip I can go over 400 miles without filling up.

Weakness:

Windows fog up very easily in cold weather; air conditioner and engine are very noisy; doors vibrate when car is in park.

I bought this car about a year and a half ago with 80,000 miles on it, and it still runs great with 100,000. However, I feel like I''ve been putting too much money into fixing things lately. The dent resitant door are wonderful, but they definitly do not add any class. I would recommend the SL2 to anyone looking for their first new (or used) car. Next time, I would definitly buy from a dealer though.

Good gas mileage Good acceleration Exellent service at the dealer

Weakness:

Skimmpy and low seats Bumpy rides Overdue for a new design. Look forward to viewing the new Saturn Ion

My wife and I bought the Saturn SL1 in March 2001 after we sold our Ford Winstar. We had a lot of problems with the Winstar after 5 years of usage. Our 1st vehicle was a 1980 Toyota Corolla, our wedding gift from my in-laws. We drove the Corolla for 16 years, no major problems. The SL1 is not a Toyota, but it is good enough for me, especially for a loaded car priced less than $20,000.00. The gas mileage is excellent, sometimes less than $20.00 per week. Good acceleration. The ride can be bumpy at times but I got used to it. The seats are skimmpy and low, not comfortable for a long journey. The interior instrumental panel has pretty good design. In comparison I found the 2000 and 2001 Corolla''s instrumental design quite boring. Service at the Saturn dealership is excellent.

Strength:

LUXURY! This car is comfortable, folks. Awesome seats and roominess, big trunk, power-everything, NICE handling, adequate acceleration (5 spd std), good stock stereo. MPG! I can''t believe how far it goes on $15. 30-40MPG easy.

Weakness:

Reliability is a huge set back. I bought the car at 111,000KM and blew my clutch at about 118,000KM. $400 CDN. Next, my heater went in the middle of -30C winter weather. Unfixed. My ABS just broke and it''s still icy out. Unfixed. Tires leak air, despite fixing multiple times. Fuses blow regularily...cheap but annoying. I have to carry a bag of the damn things with me.

I bought the car because I wanted something that had a good name (or so I thougt at the time) and had low km''s. Since I couldn''t afford an import, this was the next best thing. However, this car has it''s good and it''s bad. The longer I own this car, the more the bad outweighs the good. The car has luxury, I''ll give it that. Reliability, it lacks. You ever drive a car that you just don''t trust? I''m supposed to drive this car about 2500 miles this summer for a road trip and instead I''ve started car shopping again. I don''t trust it, nuf said. I would never buy one again. Oh, and BTW, these things have the lowest resale value out there.

My last vehicle was a 1988 Jeep Vehicle. Much funner but even less reliable, very uncomfortable, and LOW MPG. However, at least you could repair it yourself.

I have had this car for almost 7 years. I have only had normal car repairs done. The Saturn dealership have been nothing but wonderful to deal with. When it came to prices the dealership was actually less expensive then my mechanic!!!! 97,000 + miles and still going strong.
