Fits in my garage; Dog loves the ride

Weakness:

Electrical System, Brakes

My car-life has gotten pretty bad when I have to resort to leaving a review on a web site. I purchased this car new February 2003 & purchased the extended warranty (BIG MISTAKE) to 75,000 miles. To date, the car has been in for service 11 times. Headlight out. Wiring harness recall, Drivers window won't go up (3 times in for that one) Front Brakes replaced at 7700 miles, Rear drivers turn signal out (4 times in for that one), Full electrical system check, Sporadic (don't ya love it when it does that) ignition problem - turn key, nothing happens???, Replace drivers side strut at 11200 miles. I have contacted the Svc. Rep at the Dealer, got sympathy nothing else; Wrote GM - 1st offer was refund of extended warranty (I paid 1408.00); 2nd offer refund 1 month car payment (a lower amount then extended warranty?); 3rd offer was 3 car payment (still lower then amount I paid for extended warranty). Right now, I have a unreliable vehicle; a 4 year car loan, a worthless extended warranty. I will hire an attorney, if necessary. I do NOT recommend this car!

Strength:

Great cost, great mileage, great handling, fairly comfy for shorter trips ( gets uncomfy after a few hours). Loads of space in the trunk ( we fit two of everything in there when we had the twins.)The interior fabric cleans up wonderfully and after these kids we wondered about that.

Weakness:

Lots of little parts broke off, little switches broke and we had some issue with the drivers window coming out of its runners. But no huge or costly problems at all.

Bought this car used after my Cavalier was totalled. It was fully loaded ( with every add on ) and I loved it from the start. This car lasted thru my single life, onto marriage and twins boys. No rpoblems whatsoever until at 200000km's we needed to replace the clutch. Still looks beautiful...no rust at all. Stil going stron. I highly recommend it!

Strength:

Feels like a sports car, small car yet big inside. Fold down back seat is a plus. Easy to customize. Fast for its size and year. Stock sunfire beats an aftermarket Dodge Avenger in 1/4 mile.

Weakness:

Oxygen sensors, alternator, brakes, water on trunk falls right in trunk when its opened. power window controls are in the middle, not good for trying to shift at the same time, or stear, or do anything.

I've had my sunfire for just ofver 3 months. The car has been alright so far. It came loaded with everything a 96 can get. The first thing that went wrong was the alternator, but that was the mechanic's fault. The car was bought from an auction and they replaced the alternator, but instead of running a wire to the ignition like you are supposed to, they ran it straight to the battery. They also used too small of a wire so it fried the first night i took it out. That was easily solved with bigger wire. That works fine now. Problem number 2, the AC Compressor makes noise, not when its on like you would think, but when you have the AC off. The pulley rubs on the face plate of the compressor, so it makes an un-ignorable screeching noise when its OFF. So i have to leave it on 24/7. I tired to get the face plate shimmed but it can't be done, a new compressor costs $180!!!! The 3rd and 4th problems are the un and down stream oxygen sensors. They both fried within a month of having it. So the check eninge light always was on till i got it fixed. A good $250 there. 5thly. The brake pads were worn down to nothing, had to get those replaced, the guy i bought it from did it for free. 6th problem was the muffler hanger, its rusted off and fell off in my driveway one day. That costs about $12 which i replaced myself. AC works great (except for the noise), it take average time to heat up or cool down. I was disappointed by how hard the suspension is, you can feel a grain of sand if you went over it. Hopefully new coil-overs and shocks will ease that up. The car is doing just fine after all that was done, although, that seems like it was due to regular maintainence which was probably never ever done to this car. 151,000 miles and going sorta strong.

Strength:

Sporty design, has all the extras I wanted in a car for an affordable price.

Weakness:

Trunk Design, rear window design, brakes

Nice car, awesome sound system.Trunk design doesn't allow you to use large boxes. The angle of the rear window makes it difficult to remove debris in the crevice. At 20K miles had to have front brakes, completely replaced. Service tech said they were completely rusted out. Had to have new rotors, the whole works replaced. This seemed odd to me. Comments welcome!

Lets see... When I bought the car used in '99, she was in fairly good shape... loved the car... with the exception of the "bonking" when I turned left (should have had that checked out when it was under extended warranty. At 97,500km, the catalytic converter went - no problem - under warranty ('till 100,000kms) - phew... but wasn't covered was the windshield wipers (which stop in line of vision when off) and the broken rear defrost (which the dealer was more than happy to fix at $400+ each). Then had to have the hinges on the doors replaced (washers rusted out - couldn't open drivers door - damaged lock). Life was good, 'till I hit the 160K mark... I have since had a new water pump installed, new starter, they are recommending a new timing chain ($400+), had the 3rd (or 4th - can't keep track) hanger installed on the dual exhaust, time for a tune up ($500+), driver side door frame is rusting out, still living with the broken defrost and defunct wipers (which is considered a safety hazard, and should be recalled - as per the "Lemon Aid Guide", but GM begs to differ), need new rotors (again), the bonking is still there... When they replaced the started (at a local mechanic), they disconnected the battery - which with my factory stereo locked me out of the radio. Enter my security code you say? Well, as it is a used car, the only one who knows the code is the guy in Montreal who previously owned the car. So, had to take the car into the dealership, who were more than happy to spend the 30 seconds to deactivate the lock and charge me $40+ for it. I have been looking for a new car (foreign – so it will hold it’s value, and is a little more reliable). They have offered me $3,300 for a trade in. I owe more than that on the car (nice). Might try to sell it privately. ). Lil’ Red and I have been many places together, but it may be time to part ways.
