BRAKES,BRAKES,BRAKES!

I Hate this car! I had a 1997 Grand Am prior to owning the 99, and loved it. I first replaced the brakes and rotors before 5,000 miles. I have had to replace the brakes on the 99 every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, and the rotors every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. What makes all the problems with the brakes even worse is the service departments attitude. They act like I have problems withe the brakes because I am a women. I have never needed to replace brakes every 5,000 to 10,000 miles on any other car I have driven. Additonal problems include a/c and heat control knobs only work on selected settings, and the gas gage quit working before 20,000 miles.

Strength:

roominess in trunk and interior, sound system, paint, looks.

Weakness:

belts, gas, brakes, ac/heat, odometer,

First off, i loved (past) this car! Looks so nice, so clean, so roomy (i have 3 kids). Number one fact: I got ripped off! I see what everybody else paid and I know I got ripped, almsot $5000 for an 89!!! I thought I was going up in ranks, you know, you get what you pay for? Right? I shoudl have known it was a bad omen when, the day I bought it, I didnt even make it to the gas station and it died in the middle of an intersection! ran out of gas as I was turning into the gas station, although it showed it was at a 1/4 of a tank, ha! I have to worry now when it gets to half! I thought no big deal just gas! Some small problems have been, the odometer quit working right away ( expensive to fix and just not worth it) I am obvioulsy good at judging my speed. Have had lots of problems with alternator! Until my husband put one in it from a junk yard, does good now! The fuses always blow for the inside lights, have gotton used to darkness after dark. The brakes suck! They have gotton only worse. Speed sucks, I cant pass anyone without it sounding like its going to croak. Hogs gas something awful! Every time we turn on/off the heat or air it starts to die! Whats up with that? I compare it to my husbands 90 chevy cavalier which has its own assortment of problems (mostly water/oil leaks) But that sucker gets up and goes and lasts twice as long on the gas ( for the same amount of driving) alhtough I would trust mine over his on long trips. . Although all in all its a godo family car, puts up with alot from a good size family. BUT, my MAIN hUgE problem is the alternator belt!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!! I would love to hear from anybody with these kinds of troubles! They break on a regular basis! Every month or so. Thank god I had a cell phone on me when it happened out on a dead highway late at night in the pouring rain with three sleeping children! What would I have done? It keeps snapping. We have taken and heeded lots of advice, tried better brands, different stores, differetn people fixing it, different people looking at it, the belts only cost abotu $8-10 but each time we have it looked at about $200 just to tell us, nothing ''seems'' wrong. Just use a better belt!! I have!! I always worry when it will strike next! This can be scary! ALSO, for those talking about preventive maintenice, we have done nothing but! It has always been taken care of even by the previous owner

Strength:

Very comfterable on long trips, Atractive, the ladys love it, the standard speakers are wonderfal, I could go on all night.

Weakness:

The only weakness I could find with this car was that if I wanted to customize it I couldn''t find many things that was made specificaly for this car.

Honestly I cant understand why these reviews are so bad, it could be that alot of the older modles have been added in to the over all review. I have had my car for a year and love it. Even though its only a V4, I have gotten it to go 130mph with no changes done to the engine. The interior lights up at night with bright red lights all over. Its 0-60 is supriseingly fast, I have beaten many cars such as a 1997 Mustang, a 2000 Jetta, and a Mazda P5 just to name a few.

Looks great, drives well, comfortable, reliable.

Weakness:

Just a couple minor problems. Replaced a power steering vacuum hose at 50,000 miles. Only other problem was the air/heater fan - fan didn''t not work on 2 lowest speed settings.

I purchased this car used December 1999 - traded in my 1992 Grand Am SE. The car had 29,000 miles on it and was somewhat hesitant to purchase, since the warranty only had 7,000 miles left. As it turned out, there was no need to worry. I loved everything about it. Loved the way it looked and handled, as well as the reliablility. Unfortunately, it was stolen and totalled out last week (62,000 miles). Tomorrow I will be buying my 3rd Grand Am - this time a GT.

Strength:

Comfortable driving; good looks; well-equipped; easy handling; good gas mileage; very reliable until it hit 65,000 miles. Always started, even with the cold Minnesota Winters. Never had problems with power windows or locks or air conditioning. Those have been problems on my previous cars. No rust or problem with the paint. 4 cyl engine was quick.

Weakness:

After 65,000 miles the costs of upkeep were tremendous. From what I understand there were numerous problems with cracked heads on the 4 cylinder engines.

When I bought my 1992 Grand Am SE in January 1993 it had 12,000 miles. 7 years later I traded it in for a 1999 Grand Am SE. The first few years my ''92 was terrific. It looked great and the only money I spent on it was preventive maintenance. Once my car got 65,000 miles, it started nickeling and diming me to death. I replaced: the serpentine belt 2 times; alternator; the brake line broke 2 times; wheel bearing; lots of brakes (ok, maybe it''s the way I drive); cracked engine head; and the when I traded it the transmission was slipping.

Sporty interior but with a relatively smooth ride 60/40 split backseat for skis and bikes is priceless Realiablity is very good except for one small problem.

Weakness:

Engine is underpowered. Body is rusting in trunk lid.

Fabulous car! I purchased the car with 80 000km on it, added 145 000km over the last 4 years without any major problems. The only annoyance of the car is the 4cyl engine. It''s power is non-existent, but it has never failed me and have given my no indication it ever will. The only problem with the vehicle is an weird electrical problem with the rear-defroster which has cost over $1000 to repair, and it needs to go in again. It has served me well. It is an excellent car for those who want a sport look but with good interior room and trunk space (holds 4 sets of golf clubs). I have driven many cars but would buy a Grand Am again

Strength:

Has quite a bit of low end torque. Definitely will hold its own in a light to light race with any v-6 car.

Weakness:

Power windows suck. It is regulated at around 115m.p.h. I know it can go faster than that. If you know how to overide that damn regulator, email me.

I''ve read all the reviews and I am dissapointed and suprised. First of all, my back window won''t go up or down. That bothers me. Second, one of my lights on the car is always burning out. It has 87,000 on it and that is all that is really wrong with it. Not bad. I beat the hell out of it and it takes it in stride. The v-6 is smooth and powerful. Good car.

Model Reviewed: Grand Am SE, 3.3L, 4dr

Strength:

I have spent little on this car over the years for major repairs, but it has racked up its fair share of annoyances. - Acceleration is great - A/C works well - The 4dr is roomy - Bright-red paint is holding up well; people think it''s a 97 or 98 - Didn''t blow a head gasket every 40k like my old Plymouth with a 2.2L-Turbo!

Weakness:

- The serpentine belt sucks to replace because it goes around the side engine mount - Major water leak along front firewall - MAF sensor needs cleaning every 20k - Still used R12 refrigerant (freon) - Electronically limited to 110mph - Factory-misaligned left tailight caused left corner of trunk to rust (saw this on other Grand Ams too) - Seats provide poor back support (my ''88 Ply Sundance had way better seats) - How much did GM save by NOT putting a light in the trunk? - The ABS brakes SUCK! They pulse WAY to slowly; I wish I could disable the ABS system completely.

Bought in 1995 with 24k miles; it had been repaired from a hefty front-end collision before the dealer had it, so I''ll omit any of those related problems. This car has been a strong performer for me over the past seven years, although it certainly has "character!" The volt gauge "dances" even though the lights are constant brightness. The oil and check-gauges lights go on and off whenever they feel like it. The oil gauge reads 120psi but a mechanic verified it''s actually running about 70psi. The clutch-coil on the A/C compressor shorted at 125,000, which was a pain to fix and cost $40. The headlights (on the stalk) sometimes don''t come on unless you "jiggle the handle." (we renamed this car The Red Toilet because of that!) Alternator died at 145,000 ($220 at dealer). Acceleration got worse and worse over the years until I discovered that cleaning the MAF sensor totally fixes the problem: a 5 minute job that ANYONE can do! The last and worst of the problems is a water leak SOMEWHERE in the car (either the windshield or gutter below it) that allows water to seep under the carpet, driver and passenger sides. I tore the entire car''s interior out to the steel, thought I had fixed the problem, Lysol''ed everything and put it all back to find out there is STILL a major water leak along the firewall somewhere. After reading another review of a ''99 GA doing the same thing, I bought a new Grand Prix instead, since I keep cars a long time. Nevertheless, I don''t have any major regrets buying this car. Most of the problems happened within the past two years. I drive cars hard, about 40 miles a day at 85+ on the highway. This 3.3L engine is fantastic, doesn''t burn any oil at 150,000 and still has all the guts it did when I bought it. It even seems more peppy than the 3.4L 2002 model I recently test drove.

Strength:

Fast, looks O.K.

Weakness:

Worthless, too many problems to list!

My car had six miles on it when I bought it. It has left me stranded many times. The first only a few months after I bought it. Please if anyone bothers to read this, DO NOT BUY A GRAND AM! The dealerships tell you there is nothing wrong, but there appears to be major issues with the alternator, electrical, windows, power steering, etc. I know two other owners with the same problems. I spoke with a family friend who is a mechanic for GM. His advice was to stay away from the Grand Am. If you get one that works good for you, but if you get one that breaks down, then you are stuck!

I have always owned GM products, however this GM is my last! I always wanted to own "American" vehicles. Next time I will buy Toyota. No one complains about them!
