Grand Am/Pontiac/GM/American cars Trading it in for a Maxima. Best of luck to the used Grand Am buyers out there, don't get mine ... First 36,000 mi were great. No problems. Lots of compliments and fun to drive. Continue to and have been performing regular care. To date, out of warranty, replaced head gaskett, three oil pumps, and one engine. Current problems include defective parking brake, seat belt lock (pops out), defective cd player, water in reverse light, tranny is slipping, interior trim is lifting from the doors, bubbles underneath the dash trim, AC does not work on first setting, window regulator broke from window, ride is getting rougher (lots of road noise), lumbar support creeks ... Called 800 Pontiac Cares(less) hotline after the engine and got $1000 comp for the purchase of a new GM . . . not likely. |

Stylish, Comfortable, Affordable and Fast
Weakness:
The rotors were warped after a couple months but the warranty covered it. The service guy said the rotors were bad on a lot of the new Grand Am's I bought my car in April 2001. I love it! The ride is great and smooth. It is roomy and comfortable. I would definatly buy another. Would not reccomend a two door for families with children. |

Strength:
affordability, great look, reliable, good gas mileage, roomy for a coupe
Weakness:
huge depreciation, higher than I thought to insure the vehicle, paint chipping, trunk is a not real big Great and reliable car! It was a Grand Am GT, 2door loaded, and red! I just wish I hadn't leased it, since it depreciates so much. I traded it in at 49,000 miles and the only things I replaced were brakes and the water pump system. It busted in the cold weather. The sunroof was not operating correctly either, but was fixed under warranty. The paint chipping problem only occurred in a small area, unlike my previous 1991 Grand Am (the hood chipped bad). It drove very well and has pick up and go! Similar Products Used: 1991 grand am, 1987 bonneville |

Strength:
-Great styling -Excellent power -Roomy, comfy, pleasure to be in -Big side mirrors
Weakness:
-Blind spot from the front A-piller -Inconsistent fuel economy (excellent to average) -Rear-view mirrow visiblity limited with spoiler I bought this car as a lease buy-back. It already had 35,000km, but it was in great shape. The acceleration is impressive, and almost dangerous in icy roads, but there's an adequate traction system included. Fuel economy is average in the city. I found that if I drive nice, then the gas mileage is impressive. I took this car on the hi-way a few times. On the first 4 hours of the trip, the fuel economy didn't seem that great. But maybe the engine management gets used to the condition, and by Day 3, on twisty mountain roads with the A/C on full, I honestly thought my gas gauge was broken. What happened was that I hardly used any gas, and the benefits carried forward into city driving for months until winter came back. My wish is that I could of got a 5-speed with the V6. But the 4-speed auto is still great. As for problems, I had this annoying buzzing noise coming from the passenger door speaker, and it still comes and goes. I also have this big scratch on my driver's window from the dust that gets stuck in the weatherstripping. I found that it's common in many Grand Ams and Aleros, but GM won't do anything. Before I installed mud flaps, the front tires were kicking up dust and rocks onto the sides along the rocker panels, leaving discoloration. I had to replace the EGR valve, and just recently, my signal lights weren't working. The dealer said it was common, and quickly replaced the hazard light switch. Again, GM won't address the problem. But it's a great car, great power, great handling in all conditions and speeds, and I'm a happy buyer. Similar Products Used: Olds Alero, Toyota Camry, Dodge Stratus/Plymouth Cirrus, Honda Accord |

It is a nice car to look at
Weakness:
There is ALWAYS a problem with the car This car is a waste of money. After having my car for 5-6 months, I had to get a new a new rack and pinion. The mechanics couldn't hear the hitting noise in the steering column after driving it 9 miles. The service manager went out to my car to hear the noise and I didn't even have to start my car. All I did was turn the wheel and he told me what the problem was. Maybe if Pontiac had mechanics that actually knew more than the service managers, people wouldn't have to bring the car back for the same problem more than one time. Also, whenever I am driving, there is a metal rubbing sound in my front tires that only happens when I have my foot on the gas pedal. Not only that, I have only had my car for a little over 9 months and the engine sounds messed up; it sounds as if there is something wrong with the lifters. I have to bring it to the dealership still for those two problems. They will probably go joy riding in my car again (it doesn't take 9 miles to figure out a problem)and tell me that there is nothing wrong and they don't hear any sound and then charge me $95.00 an hour for labor that probably wasn't even done. If there was a way to go back in time, I wouldn't of even looked at the Pontiac dealership let alone buy one. |

Weakness:
every thing, this is like a yugo, drive for a couple of years and throw in the junk yard. This car isn't the best car we ever bought I have to say. We have only had it alittle over a yr and had to replace the brakes twice and we go through tires like crazy! And the front end is always out of line. There is some kind of electrical problem in it too. And the oil light is always on and it doesn't matter how much we change the oil. Oh and the airconditioner blows smoke out the vents every once in a while if we have it on low. |

Looks great, decent gas mileage
Weakness:
Scraping noise on front drivers side that no one can identify, Tire Pressure light that goes on even when the tire pressure is fine...the dealer cannot even get this one fixed...how about 2 seperate trips to the dealer to replace fuel injectors that misfired due to bad fuel this winter...isn't fuel required to make our vehicles move and isn't it federally mandated? Ask the dealer that question when they try to hand you the $400 bill! Next is a seatbelt the little plastic thing that holds it in place and also ensures that it doesn't move all over the place broke right off when trying to put on my seatbelt...same cheap plastic must have been used on the vanity mirrors and the visor clips that hold the sun visors in place...all those broke too. Next would be the doors in the back section of the car, all of the material was peeling away from the door and whole new door kits had to be put in on both sides. Broken hazzard light caused other things in my dash of 3000 warning lights to malfunction. Overhead light had short in it...these are the only things I can remember right now too...this car is a money sucker and beyond disappointing! DON'T BUY ONE! Absolute worthless piece of Junk! I bought a NEW car for a reason and do not recommend a 1999 Grand Am to ANYONE EVER! |
