This was my first car, bought it used from someone selling it, thought it was going to be a decent american made car to last me thru college. I was dead wrong...after searching for the right car for months my parents and I decided on this one, had only 68000 miles on it in 2008, had only one owner, garage kept. But that didn't seem to make a difference for this car. I have had something wrong with this car literally every other month, and not just little repairs. I swear I have put way too much money into this car. Including a rebuilt enegine because of a thrown rod, should have dumped it after that. And I have been nothing but good to this car, regular maintance and everything. Air conditioning went, needed a paint job, dashboard stopped working, needed a new gas filter...all repairs on this car have been at least 300 dollars and as much as 2300! Its currently in my front yard with a blowed head gasket. Don't ever buy this car!!! I will never own another pontiac everrr!

My se, which only has a 2.2 4 cyl is a bit weak, kinda annoying but for 28 mpg, i really dont care. Paint kinda sucks

I love this car. Its American, its cheap because it's not Japanese or German. Car drives nice, I only know this because I drove a Volvo for 3 years, and they drive very smooth. If u dont have a ton of cash, want something stylish, this car is very underated

A tad too low to the ground, side windows eventually get scratches, no "Line In" jack on the stereo, wife complains about lack of "Beauty" lights on sun visor mirrors (clearly not a car for women)

I'm writing this review in 2010, and my 2002 Grand Am GT is still an absolute pleasure to own and to drive. The polymer body side cladding has protected it all these years from door dings, so it still looks great. The engine is still running strong, with more than enough power, and if I keep it under 2000 RPM's (easy to do with a 3.4L engine that makes plenty of low end torque), the fuel economy is just as good as a 4 cylinder compact car.

The ergonomics of this car were very carefully laid out, and it still shows. Immediately, one notices that the center stack is angled towards the driver. The more subtle, but equally as important, touches become apparent at night. The front seat map lights are located in the mirror, and are engineered such that they each (or both) provide plenty of light where you'd want it, but there is absolutely no glare either on the windshield or from the light itself. The effect is as though the light comes from nowhere. The back seat courtesy lights are also designed such that the back seat passengers get light where they need it, and there's no glare whatsoever to affect the driver. This means back seat riders can have their light on for hours while driving down dark, unlit roads safely.

The back seat passengers each get a pocket on the back of the front seats to stow stuff, and each get a cup holder along with a courtesy light. Back seat windows roll down pretty far, and there's plenty of head and leg room. When there's nobody in the back, there's a 60/40 split fold down which can only be released from the trunk, which improves security of items stowed in the trunk considerably when the remote trunk release is disabled.

The gauge cluster tells me everything; when the oil needs to be changed, when the oil or coolant is low (which have never come on except during the start-up "Lamp Test"), when to add washer fluid (it always takes one full bottle when it comes on, which is a nice touch)...it's like there's a sensor for everything. It's actually split into two different gauge clusters, with a tach on one side and speedometer on the other, and lots of room all around for those "Idiot" lights; though in my Grand Am GT, considering what they tell me, I'd say they're far from being simple idiot lights; rather, they're timely reminders that have saved me time and money over the years.

Everything is where it should be for the driver. Even the location for the trunk release is located cleverly along the arm rest of the driver's side door. Whether it's adjusting the buttery smooth HVAC controls, adjusting the incredibly good sounding Monsoon stereo controls, rolling back the sunroof, rolling down windows, or setting the cruise control, it's perfectly located. Even my hand falls naturally on the leather wrapped gear shifter; no reaching or stretching.

I need to mention performance. Even in this day and age, there aren't many cars that will best the Grand Am GT in the "Lame duck lane" run (this is where two lanes reduce to one after a red traffic light), thanks to the ample low end torque, combined with the aggressive gear ratio. If a driver bests me in the lame duck lane run, they're definitely paying for that right. In the twisties, the beefy sway bars keep it level, and the rigid body structure keeps everything in order. Combined with the 4 wheel disc brakes (which I've upgraded to ceramic pads), there's plenty of fun to be had, and it takes a lot to come close to the limits.

People keep reminding me it's not a performance car, which is true. It takes regular octane fuel, has a naturally aspirated engine, and has four doors. So, according to the insurance company, it's just a regular 4 door sedan, and thus costs roughly the same to insure as an economy car. When I fuel up at the pump, I'm buying the cheapest gas. When I'm cruising around town, I get 4 cylinder-like fuel economy. However, when I hit a twisty back road, it certainly doesn't feel like I'm driving an economy car; and when I consider the superb stock stereo and all the features at my fingertips, I'm feeling like I'm driving something that ought to be costing more.

The washer fluid comes out of the wipers, directly onto the windshield. Ever get behind a car with hood mounted washer sprayers, to see half of the washer fluid sprayed up over the roof of the car, and onto the cars behind them? What a waste. With the washer nozzles in the wiper arms, my GAGT gets every drop where it needs to be.

Finally, let's talk about style. Notice there's no gutters on the roof of the GAGT? It's like one formed piece of metal from the roof to the rear quarters. The ram air intake on the nose certainly looks great, and even though all four tailpipes come from one exhaust, they really finish the look.

I'm going to enjoy this car while I can. This blend of style, features, price, performance, and economy might not ever be seen again.

I have had my car for almost 4 years now and within the first year i spent almost three times as much getting it fixed as i did when i originally bought the car. At 90,000 miles everythijng seems to go,wiring, transmission, engine, ac, heat, axels i even had a rim give out on me. I am very attached to my car but thats expected for anything that helps you dig such a big hole :(

The rotors will need to be changed annually. I am a mechanic shop teacher and I really mean this. The contour of the mag rims I believe actually fan the heat towards the rotors causing excessive
heating and warping to occur. I am on my 8th set of rotors. Yes, the last set I put on were the top of the line and I was told they were the best on the market. Well they lasted seven months on the Grand Am.

I don't even know where to begin...The car had only 50k miles on it when purchased about 4 years ago for 7,300 dollars. In the short amount of time I have owned this vehicle..I've probably spent close to that amount on repairs.

Not even two weeks after I drove the car off the lot, my A/C started to break. It wouldn't work on any setting except for setting 3 on max for some reason. Car was under warranty so dealership fixed this problem right away. The next thing to go in this car was the fuel pump...which has since been replaced twice since it initially broke the first time. I also lost both of my mirrors while going through a car wash a year ago, the only thing that kept them on was the power wires. The dealership wanted to charge me 250 for new mirrors, so I just bought a few bolts from Lowe's and screwed them back on myself. Also, the ABS and service engine lights have been coming on since the car had around 70,000 miles. and keep coming on even though I pretty much had everything imaginable fixed/looked at. The passenger side window fell down off the track while I was driving home one day from work. I had my friend's dad take off the door panel to fix it for me, but it turns out the motor for the window completely rotted and crumbled, which caused the window to just fall straight down into the door. It is now being held up by zip-ties put in certain parts of the door under the window to support it.

Also, about a year after I got the car, at about 60k miles the transmission broke and I had to get a new one put in. I don't think this should be happening at only 60 thousand miles. Thank God my car was still under warranty then, or else it would have cost me a fortune to replace.

The most recent problem I had with my car was last week. My dad was driving behind me and informed me that my left brake light was out...when I got home later that day I bought a light and asked my boyfriend to put it in the car for me..well it turns out the whole back left area of the car was rusted when he took the light out..and NONE of the lights on the left hand side worked (reverse, brake, etc). I called the dealership and of course they are trying to charge me way to much to fix the problem. So for now I'm just driving without working lights on the left rear side of the car.

I have also been having problems with the A/C again. Now, max AC will not work AT ALL, and I have 2 vents that wont blow any air. Not good when you are 8 months pregnant in Florida in the middle of July...

I could go on for days about this...but I think any Grand-Am owner knows all of this by now..if you are thinking about buying this car, don't. Avoid this piece of crap at all costs...

Horrible acceleration, leaks, terrible gas mileage, constant trips to the shop, it kicks like a old woman, power windows don't work, black interior which means hotass car during summer, this car is not meant to go beyond 100,000 miles...it's a piece of schmidt

great design, handles exceptionally well, runs smooth, comfortable seats, good sound system, no engine malfunctions even after being 10 years old.

Wow! I am shocked to hear such negative reviews on what I consider to be the most dependable car I have have ever owned. Sorry about your luck, folks! We have owned this Grand Am GT for over 7 years now. We bought it used with about 40,000 miles on it. It has NOT given us a major problem since the day we bought it! My husband replaced the brakes three times now so I guess that would be the only major problem we have had. Sure, the windows have broken on us twice in the last year but it is 10 years old. We don't drive the crap out of it. It only has 90,000 miles on it which is good for a 99. Husband does regular tune ups and oil changes since he is a mechanic it's free. It has great get up and go since the very beginning. Handles great in snowy weather. Very comfortable ride. Original factory cd player is still installed and we have never had an issue with it. We have only had to replace the headlight bulbs twice over the last 7 years. It has never had one single engine malfunction to date, knock on wood. We can run it almost completely out of gas and it still drives excellent. So, all in all, we paid entirely too much for it unfortunately but it has been 100% reliable the last 7 years and we have no intention on letting it go anytime soon. The problems with the windows breaking is pretty minimal and not really a hassle at all. Thats what happens when a car has power everything. Eventually, it will break. Recently we purchased a Chevy Venture mini van b/c we now have two children. It has the exact same motor as our grand am so I am confident it will treat us well. We also have a 2002 Chevy Cavalier with 200,000 miles on it and it runs like new. NEVER had a major problem with anything and I mean NEVER. The only issue I have ever had with it is the fact that it's too slow. Only has a 4 cyl. I have never had a problem with GM and will never purchase anything but.
