Strength:

Handling, performance, interior size, controls are easy to understand and use, looks (doesn't really look like a normal neon)

Weakness:

Horrible road noise through windows even after being adjusted countless times, lots of squeaks and noises, rattling windows, lack of power window option on 95 coupes.

I am 17 and i've had this car since my 16th birthday. It was a good car for a first, i guess i really can't complain compared to what some people my age drive. It handles really really well, and has great pickup with the 2.0L DOHC that came with Sports. It really doesn't look like a regular Neon with the alloy wheels and spoiler. I am selling this car soon. I am getting a Honda Del Sol. I am just getting tired of the little things with the Neon, the little squeaks, the tremendous amounts of wind noise at highway speed. At first it was ok, but then it gets to you. i've adjusted them so many times i cannot believe. I think this is a great first car for people on a budget, and it's really a blast to drive, probably why my gas mileage isn't what i expected ;)

Ride Quality
Interior color
Power steering
Good brakes
Roomy
Handling

Weakness:

Visibility from front and back (not really a problem)
Rear end of the car is too high
Acceleration
Wind noise

This car is great! It's sporty looking and has a descent ride quality. It handles pretty good. The sound system is at it's best. Acceleration is okay for the automatic but manual is better. Handles like a dream! Nice looking interior. Great afterproducts for the 2000 neons. If your into racing, this car would blast your opponent. Overall this car is good enough for $15,000!

Strength:

Quick little car, has a lot of pep. Nice brakes and pretty tight steering.

Weakness:

Head gasket pretty much blew around 50,000. Luckily an extended warranty was acquired and a new engine was put in FREE from dealership. Air conditioning started going out, and somtimes the fans wouldn't even work. Computer flaws at points where to fix it you would have to turn off the car and restart it. This car is a big pain in the ass, stay away from it.

$9000, I do not recommend buying a Neon, not even a recent one. Cheaply made, and resale sometimes is a shocker. Keep looking for a mid/compact car!

Strength:

Price at the time I bought it, body design, fits a small person comfortably, standard feaaatures.

Weakness:

mpg is not what the sticker said it would be, head gaskets replaced 4 times, radio replaced2 times, compressor replaced, some clunking noise in front driver side tire-afraid wheel will fall off, dealer can't fix

Paid 16K. Can't get rid of it without taking a loss, only had it three years and only 33k miles, dealer will only give me 3500 for it. When I had to take it to be repairedI had a lot of trouble with dealers, because the dealer I bought it from is forty five minutes away from my house and the dealers close to my house are reluctant to give me good service because I didn't buy it from them. I do not ever recommend this car to anybody, except someone I didn't like.

Strength:

easy to maneuver and park, light price, good ergonomics

Weakness:

Sluggish brakes, poor acceleration, extreme wind noise at highway speeds, windows on doors are not "enclosed" on the top...they roll up into the body of the car contributing to excessive noise, easy to break and poor contruction. Poor emergency handling. After a while the look/design wears on you and that little "smile" the car is known for is no longer attractive...I want a divorce from this car soon.

You get what you pay for (less than $15,000) and buyer beware of the fit and finish. Too many rattles and sqeeks...see above comments. I advise you to go with a Honda (civic), Toyota, Volkswagen (Jetta) or even a new Daewoo (Leganza) if you are buying a car under $18,000. I never had a complaint with my Passat and other cars were at the very least acceptable. The Plymouth Neon is a poor excuse for a car in the long term and Chrysler/Plymouth should be embarrassed.

I suggest buying a Neon only if you are desparate for a low priced car and won't buy foreign. The resale value is highly questionable too.

Strength:

The mileage is the biggest strengh 32 mph overall. The interior had held up pretty good. Peppy engine. Great heater.

Weakness:

Reliability, I have taken it in for Compressors to Head Gaskets leaks. The automatic transmission is jerky. The exhaust rattles when it rains and they can't fix it. (tried several times) Just basically annoying repairs.

Paid 12500 for it in March of 1994. At the moment I have 127500 miles on it. I have replaced numerous expensive parts i.e. compressors, condensor, cruise control, fan harness, rear gasket, head gasket and starter. It doesn't have good quality. I take care of it regularly and it doesn't help. It still looks good though. But I wouldn't recommend one (at least a 95) to anyone who wants a trouble free car. I just put up with it.

Strength:

I have the optional 150 HP engine and it has plenty of power, good in town MPG, Lots of interior room, back seat folds down, very comfortable for a small car

Weakness:

Poor highway MPG, Transmission shifts rough

I bought the car for 10,000 used in 97 I have driven it 25,000 miles I now have 54,000 on it and it has needed a new head for an oil leak, has had problems with the dome light relay, the trunk leaks (which the chrysler extended warrantee doesn't cover), the front right speaker quit working and every once and a while the engine will misfire and set the check engine light on for a couple of days and it will go out. ..........Over all this car is not to bad but I have owned better and do expect better quality than this. I hate to say it but the next car will be foriegn.

Strength:

The car is easy to maneuver, has good passing ability.

Weakness:

Where shall I start. Currently, the car has 77,500 miles on it. I have replaced the O2 sensor, replaced head gasket twice, rebuilt the transmission. These are spendy repairs. The car engine "surges" when the A/C is running and the car is idling (yes, there is a technical service bulletin on this). The car whistles when the A/C is on (another technical service bulletin). I don't have time to keep fixing things on this car. One of the windows is noisy - sounds like a window is open when driving at high speeds when window is not open. This is a drawback of this no-frame for the window model - windows can easily get out of alignment if someone closes the door by pushing on the window.

I would not recommend any of the early Neons - say model years 95-97, primarily because of the headgasket problems. Even if you manage to get Chrysler to reimburse you, you still have to waste your time taking the car in to the dealer, renting a vehicle if you don't have another one, etc.

If it didn't have so many problems, I would like the Neon. It's a great car when nothing is going wrong with it.

Strength:

It got great gas mileage, and was fun to drive. No major mechanical problems. I really liked driving it, and it never left me anywhere, which is a plus! :)

Weakness:

Very little room, in trunk and inside-no problem for me and my two young children, but my husband was extremely uncomfortable in it. It had an oil leak, which would cost $600 to repair, which is common with this car.

I would recommend this car to anyone with a small family, and someone interested in great gas mileage. It's not suitable for a tall person, but, what do you expect? For me, it's been very dependable, but we finally outgrew it, so have just traded it off. It's made it to 94,000 miles, and has never had any expensive repairs-keep the oil changed and regular maintenance does pay off!!!

I love the look, and the color is fabulous (purple!). It gets great gas mileage. It has an excellent stereo system. I can fit into the tightest of parking spaces. I love it!

Weakness:

Where do I start? I love the car, but at this rate, I'm going to have a whole new car before I've even had it a year. I bought the car in July of 2000. The Service Engine Light (SEL) was on when I bought it, and the dealer (don't ever go to Morley Motor Co, btw) said he'd have it taken into the shop and fixed. He was sure the computer just needed reset. So he had that done. The car was sold to me as-is, which was my first mistake. I didn't realize that the lack of a warranty would be so important. Right after the car was put in the shop, the SEL light came back on, and I went back to the dealer. The guy said he thought it was a sensor, and told my dad and myself that he would pay to have the sensor replaced. So back to the shop again. At the shop, they said it needed new plugs and wires, which ended up coming out of my pocket. A few weeks later, back on with the SEL light. Back to the shop. Something with the EGR system (?). Out of my pocket. A few weeks later, back to the shop with the SEL light on. They said it was the camshaft sensor and the crankshaft sensor. So we replaced that, (out of my pocket, as the dealer refuses to talk to myself or my dad anymore) but now it's throwing a new code out. Nobody can seem to figure out what the problem is. The brakes also squeak when it's rainy out, but only for a short amount of time. I don't have problems with leaky windows, or oil leaks, like others have said they have. Just that stupid SEL light won't stay off.

I would recommend this car to others, but only with a good warranty on it, and only if you know you can trust the dealer to stick to his word (Don't go to Morley Motor Co). It's excellent for small families, and for anyone looking to get good gas mileage.

Compared to a 1986 Chevy Celebrity, this car is a ton better. Nothing on that celebrity didn't shake, squeal, or smoke. It left me stranded so many times I stopped counting. The Neon, despite the few flaws, is a lot better.
