Strength:

good gas mileage, good stereo, great style, good handling, CHEAP

Weakness:

cheap interior, exterior has too much plastic, weird smell in vents, EVERYONE HAS ONE!!

i bought this car from my in-laws who had gotten it for my wife when she graduated. i pretty much just paid them what they owed for it. for the money i couldnt have asked for a better car. we have been on numerous trips with it 500+ miles and had zero problems. gas mileage was great, about 32 when i drove it and 26 when my wife drove it. it is a 4 cyl, but it has decent pick up even compared to my grand prix gt. sound system is much better than avg. all in all a cheap dependable car.

Great gas mileage Low maintainence

None so far

Bought the car to replace my 97' Saturn SL1. Read the reviews but have only had one problem. The wheel bearings wore out. Purchased the car with 39,000 kms. Commute about 2 hrs each way to work. Now have 108,000 kms. Car drives great. 2.4 lt 4 cyl gives ample power (150 hp) with excellent gas mileage (app 35mi/gal on highway). Car is quiet yet enough power to pass on highway. Smooth quiet ride. Very economical to maintain. Dealer in St. Catharines is fantastic. Have purchased last 3 cars at Gastons.

Strength:

VERY SAFE, lots of standard features, smooth ride.

Weakness:

Paint peels off on radio buttons, rotors.

Well I loved the alero. It has a lot of standard features. It also has a very smooth ride. However the only problem I had was the rotors and the paint peeling off of the radio buttons. I espically like the automatic lights, and the acceleration which was fast and nimble. However good things must come to an end. I ran off the road, plowed through a chain link fence, and hit a tree. My airbags deployed and I was left without a scratch. If oldsmobile still made the alero I would buy another one to replace my old one which was totaled. The only thing I have against it was the traction control, it works very well during downpours while your on the road. However in snow it seems to become a burden than help. Numerous times I had to switch it off so that I could get the car to move more. Finally I wished the alero came with Onstar, when I ran off the road no one noticed since I was on the backroads and had no clue exactly where I was...

car is great runs good looks good and handles good.

Weakness:

my dad backed into the driver door

this car has been amazing. everything has worked wonderfully. only one problem and that was due to bad gas the just clogged the injectors but the dealer cleaned them with no problems. and as for all the idiots with the rotor problems maybe if u checked ur brakes with they were squeaking the rotors wouldnt go out. and one dumb ass said he replaced 5 sets of rotors and 3 sets of brakes. that is probably because when u replace a set of rotors u have to replace ur brakes too because having used brakes on makes them wear different and ruins the rotor. so dont talk about stuff that is probably ur fault.

So far this is the best car I've ever owned. I bought it with 110,300 miles on it. It was a company car and well maintained. I've already put over 4,000 miles on it and I LOVE it!

Strength:

Syling - a good looking car with the spoiler and alloy wheels. Value for the money - a lot of options for the money. Oldsmobile reputation for quality.

Weakness:

Roofline is too low - very little headroom for a person 6' or taller. Gas mileage is not what was claimed. I expected to get about 26 - 27 mpg with the 4 cylinder, am only getting about 20 -21.

I have not driven this car very long, but so far I am disappointed. I bought the GL model with the 2.2. liter Duratec engine, which seems peppy (rated at about 140 hp), and rated very good on gas, around 24 city and 32 highway. So far I have only acheived about 20 mpg. The headroom is also minimal. I'm about 6' 2" and unless I tilt back the seat and push it all the way back, my head will brush on the ceiling. The left arm rest seems to stick out over the drivers seat making me feel cramped on the left hand side as well. I bought the car after comparing to other models such as a Chrysler PT Cruiser, Chevrolet Malibu, Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Ford Taurus, and Ford Focus, and was attracted to it by its sylish looks, reported good gas mileage, and excellent price. It is also loaded up with more options such as power seats, alloy wheels, and spoiler that the competing models didn't have.

Strength:

Power - from off the line to top end Auto trans - smooth as silk Styling - very nice Appointments - great sound system Power seat makes driving a pleasure Gas mileage - 22 to 23.5 in stop and go city traffic

Weakness:

Goodyear tires - perform well but don't look as good as Michelins and never will.

This is the 2nd Alero owned by my wife and me. She has been driving her 99 Alero since 2000. A SUPER car. She has 110000 miles on it now and it is still a great looker and a terrific little speeder - especially with the K&N air filter, which make sit roar. Both Aleros, I drive the 04 have the 3.4 engine, which I highly recommend to anyone considering buying an Alero. Great styling, too, for the price range. Keep mobil 1 in the crankcase and the engine will always show the driver its appreciation. So far, the 99 Alero needed an alternator and a front strut replaced. As well, the hazard switch broke but will be repaired free under a recall order. The 99 is super fast - much faster than the 04, but our mechanic says the 99 is much looser with 110000 miles on it compared to the 04 at 19,000. Love the off the line performance as well as top end. 4 speed automatic is an incredible trans which in both cars is incredibly smooth. Don't care for the Goodyear performance tires on the 04 because they don't stay as black as the Michelins on the wife's 99. I'll replace with Michelins when the time comes. Gas mileage, when I drive like a person who has sense, is 23.5/gal city. Don't know what highway would be but wife who drives mostly highway gets almost 29/gal on her 99. I highly recommend this vehicle to anyone but like any used car, make sure the previous owner didn't abuse it. That's why some of these reviews, I believe, are not as favorable as this one. Also, the dealer is important. My dealer has a good reputation for taking care of their customers after the sale even though they are not as loose at the bargaining table, although they finally met my offer. Overall, I'm happy with the deal and the cars and would not hesitate to purchase another well-cared for Alero in the future. Why did GM close down Olds? Must be true about the conspiracy AGAINST excellence in America. Wish I had started out my car buying career with Olds!

I have had this car for three years and have had one problem. The speed sensor for the antilock brake went out and to replace it, it required the whole spindle which was $350. Other than that with 97K on it and purchased with 20K I haven't had a problem. When I read reviews on vehicles that have problems regardless of the make and model it seems to be the vehicles that have all the options that crap out.

Model Reviewed: Olds Alero LS and GLS

Strength:

Great zip and handling, passed cars on freeway without a hitch. Speed is awesome, (have 5 speeding tickets to prove that) I could feel the 170 (I think) horses when I floored the car. Cruise control was easy to use and handy on the steering wheel Split rear seats is awesome, makes loading stuff easy, unloading was a little difficult LS had great gas mileage, drove 800 miles and only had to fill up twice with half a tank left over Did pretty good on sandy terrain, and rainy roads 2 cigarette lighter holes was sweet, both me and passenger could charge our phones Has all the bells and whistles on the intrument panel, absolutely loved the tire pressure light Not much interior noise, even going 110 mph I slept in the back of the LS and it wasn't too bad Liked the little arrow by the gas gauge, showed which side my gas tank was on Heater worked really fast, went from being Antartica to Bahamas in my car in less than 30 seconds Alignment was super straight, that saved my behind a couple times when I got adrowsy behind the wheel

Weakness:

Seats were kinda uncomfortable after driving 800 miles straight, back hurt like hell Factory cd deck sucked worse than a hoover, I had to replace the cd player in both cars because it wouldn't release cds sometimes Split seat release was in the trunk which was inconvienant Cup holder layout was thought out and implemented by monkeys Doesn't handle too well on snow or ice, crashed the LS on slushy roads AC was okay, but not the best when outside temp is nearing 100 degrees When the heat was warmed up, it became to intense, always had to turn it down to the red/blue line Whole car would sometimes rattle really noisily when going 65-75, but it would pass most of the time Stalled a couple times when I was driving 25-35, didn't damage the car, but scared the crap outta me, kept me alert GLS interior on rear passenger door, by the window started coming undone, which surprised me because GLS is the luxury Alero

I was 23 when I bought my alero. I wanted something fun and fast, looked right over the Alero at first, but relooked at it because of the price. i test drove it and fell in love. My car had 52,700 miles when I bought it and it had close to 80,000 when I crashed it. Bought the Alero GLS, the luxury version, w/ 79,000 miles. Both Aleros were sedans and had the 6 cylinder, 3.4 L engine. 1 problem I ran into with both Aleros is that the rear passenger power window broke at around the 80,000 mile marker. A small plastic piece that had something to do with cranking the window up and down. I don't know if this is common with Aleros, or if 1999 was just a bad year. The LS got great gas mileage, somewhere around 300-350 miles per tank. The GLS was really bad, not sure if it was because it had so many miles to start with, but I averaged about 225-250 miles per tank. I'm only 5'1" and it had more than enough space for me, but some of my taller friends (5'10"+) were a little cramped driving. Both cars were very spacious, but the GLS is a little wider and roomier. it was tough, but I even managed to fit a 24" mountain bike in the back seat. Both cars had the split seating in the back which was really nice, I didn't like that the latch release was in the trunk though. I would recommend the sedan for a family of 3 or 4 at the most for everyone to ride comfortably. The back passengers, depending on height, might feel a little cramped. The coupe is sporty looking and would be good for a young person looking for a reliable, fun, slightly sporty car. Overall, I loved the Alero LS and had planned on driving it into the ground and I guess I kinda did. The GLS is a good car too, it had more features like leather, sunroof, etc...

Great pick up, sports package, style of the car, and price, and smooth ride, and nice sound system.

Weakness:

gas guzzler, cupholders are in interesting places, i hear water in my back window dripping when raining.Little narrow overall inside seating, and not much headroom for my husband who is 6ft.3in.

yo, I love my car. I traded it for a 95 ford explorer sport, which was also very funky due to a water leak into the car whenever it rained, steering made me feel like i was gonna loose control of the car, and the tires on it would slide at the drop of a hat in the rain. It had 143000 miles on it and whenever the wind blew, it blew my ford into another lane. so needless to say it was time for me another vehicle. although the ford was bought and paid for and i didn't want to have a car payment. i just couldn't take it anymore. I had to breakdown and get another car cause the ford was so unsafe and stinky. I would never ride anyone around in the ford. But once I drove the alero, i was impressed and more importantly it does have a wonderful, very affordable price tag on it. At first i thought, I don't want an oldsmobile. But once I got behind that wheel and experienced the power and pick up that my ford could not begin to have, I was totally and undeniable sold on the alero. But i had to have the sports package on it. I'm a gotta have a sunroof and cd player and spoiler" girl. It's a wonderful car so far. I was gonna go back and trade it in for a 4 cylinder, but i would of had to give up my amenities that i love so much, and i wasn't gonna do that. I love the big engine, although is a gas guzzler, and i love the sporty look to it. It's been a while since i've had a wonderful car since my 95 maxima in 2003, which got totaled. But I'm very happy with the alero. GO BUY ONE!!!
