bought this car in 1998, have only had to perform maintenance, just bought a brand new subaru outback, and although i like the subaru, i can't say it feels any newer once you turn the ignition on and start driving. great buy, if i didn't live in the northeast and have a 2 year old, i would've bought another one

This car I got for free from a friend

Right of the bat I noticed the motor in stock form sounds great accelerating hard, the car pulls well, and this car is quite agile for its full size sedan body. This car is also strongly built with confidence inspiring stability over bumpy roads and potholes. The solidly built interior receives no rattles from the road surface, and the suspension is tight yet comfortable to drive with. The AC and heating work quickly and well. The sheetmetal is strong and thick for a japanese car, although its cheaper counterpart, the altima, doesn't share this trait.

This car is 100% better

The only major repair is the steering rack about 30k miles into my receiving it, which had to be replaced, which cost about 300 dollars to repair.

Strength:

Beautiful looking car, very comfortable, performs excellent, great acceleration, and a lot of nice options.

Weakness:

Waaaayyyy too many repairs and problems, and nothing is cheap to repair. In 7 years, my 2 previous cars (both Corollas) never ever had any problems.

I have had the car for nearly 3 years now. I bought it used with 30,000 miles on it. Other than the "black" leather interior, it was exactly what I wanted after doing my research. It has excellent acceleration capability; you're doing 90 mph in a flash without even realizing it. I never drive that fast on purpose. I added the spoiler and dark tint on all the windows when I first purchased the car. I am always getting compliments on its great looks. It is comfortable to drive and has many creature comforts such as the power sun roof, bose stereo system, polarized rear view mirror, stereo controls on the steering wheel, etc...
Unfortunately, it didn't take long before I began to run into problems. First the fuel door would not open (I couldn't gas up, a big problem), so I had to pry it open with a screw driver. It turned out to be a simple spring that unhinged. Nissan fixed it in the parking lot of their dealership in about 2 seconds. It didn't take long before it broke again and then I had to have a new one installed for $104.
Next, the brakes went costing over $4oo. Then some computer sensor thing malfunctioned a week later where they had to reboot the software or something. That was another $130. Two months later I had to have the brakes done again, where they shaved down my rotors again. I do not drive the car hard or brake hard. I don't see how that happened. I asked the Nissan mechanic about it, and he stated that I should replace the factory rotors with ones that distribute the heat better to not warp them.
The tires that came with car sucked big time. They were terrible in wet or sloppy weather. So, after my first winter, I replaced all 4 tires nice quality ones that cost me over $500.
Around that same time I had to replace a cracked muffler. Nissan wanted over $500 to do it. I went elsewhere for half the price, but have since regretted it. The new muffler is not quiet by any means...I hate it.
Anyways, I have had all the recommended maintenance and repairs done on the vehicle as needed. All of which have costed me about another $800. Now after 2 1/2 years of owning the vehicle, I am having the rotors replaced with new brakes again, and I will have to get an all-wheel alignment because of all the vibration and juttering from warped rotors.
Finally, in the past month, for some unkown reason, my gas mileage has plummetted from 26 mpg to about 14 mpg. So, I'm sure it's probably the fuel injectors or something and will cost me a lot to repair that also.
I have to say that as much as I love the car and its drivability, I am sick to death of all the problems that arise.

Easily the best car I've owned. Quiet. Reliable. Fast. Surplus of cheap aftermarket replacement parts on Ebay. I love surprising 16 yr olds in Mustangs with this car. 0-60 in 6.6 secs and decent fuel economy to boot! Only had two problems with it. Small oil leak and battery died. But the battery was 7 years old so it had to go some time. It handles like a sports car. The factory tires are ok but this car really performs on a set of good Nittos.

CD player broke

I bought this car with 253,000 miles on it. Ran like new then, runs like new now.
It's been almost 2 years, and 21,000 miles, and not a single problem besides routine maintenance. Everything about this is still perfect, power seats, sunroof, all lights and electrical. The Bose sound system is awesome, but the cd player broke. Oh well, still have cassettes and radio. The leather doesn't have a single crack in it, everything is perfect. Great car.

Weakness:

Modifications high price, maintenance high price, Tires high price, No warranty!!! Kinda Ugly from the side.. (Very Jealous Car)

I love my car. Maybe its because I haven't had it long enough but these past 4 months have been graceful maybe I should wait about three years but this car has 153,520 miles on it.. And still runs brand new. Gas excellent, So comfortable that if your in the passenger seat your be sleep in maybe 5 minutes I love the drive. The power (Because you know I've tested it). In the 91 Maxima there is a switch of Power or comfort. I usually drive in Comfort but I just had to test it. I turned it to power and raced a Pontiac Grand Am and killed it. AND IT WAS A 2003 MODEL.... Something is up. (LOL) Its the best.. I would recommend this car to anybody but just watch who you buy it from and get the car fully checked before you make your decision on it because just like it drives like an angel if you buy it from the wrong purson it can drive just as bad... SO BE CAREFUL.. So far all I've had to do it get it some oil changes

rough ride (from what I know of so far), crappy dealers!

Very dissapointed after I paid over $20,000 for a USED Maxima w/ 48K by the time I was done with the paperwork it was 10pm drove home and heard thumps bings and bangs. I did not notice that on the short test drive I went on but it was too late to call the dealer. Called early morning they acted as if it were such a surprise to them when they checked it they told me it just needed a tire rotation. My husband than went over there had them put the car in the air and saw the struts were busted & the tires had tons of bubbles in them and needed to be replaced immediately. It was NOT just a tire rotation that was needed. So they are fixing the struts but refused on the tires said that was normal wear and tear but you would expect when they are selling a car especially for the amount I bought it for it would be in decent condition. And they refused to give me a loaner or rental and said "we're already investing $700 on your struts". Guess I can't go back now. Who knows what other problems this car has.

Strength:

*Speed & acceleration
*Reliability (on the whole no worse than I'd expect)
*Easy to haul 5 people (inc driver)
*Sound system
*On the whole easy to work on myself since I bought a Chilton book

Weakness:

*Not easy to haul long items, like wood
*Approaching end of life at 193,000 miles: showing all kinds of little problems including:
Cruise control not working.
Air handling equipment no longer fits right.
Strut bearings completely shot so eaveryone can hear it on rough roads.
CEL on again & what do the codes mean?
Losing oil around top of engine.

A great vehicle. If it wasn't for the high gas prices I'd buy another one. It's done 193,000 miles & things I've fixed or had fixed include:
*Clutch (twice); most recently the throwout bearing went, forcing up the fork & damaging the slave cylinder. Both times clutch lasted ~80,000 miles.
*Starter motor - easy to replace myself.
*Alternator - not easy to replace myself but I did it anyway.
*The obvious: tires, battery, spark plugs (plugs are easy to do myself).
*Front transaxles & struts (probably didn't really need it, but I misdiagnosed another problem: the bearing on top of the strut which still needs replacing).
*An O2 sensor thing near the back of the muffler to stop a check engine light signal.
*Brake pads & a couple of brake cylinders
*Speakers (from Wal*Mart)
*No bulbs: I have not had to replace a single bulb! I will be getting all my light bulbs imported from Japan in the future!

My mom bought this car in 1996 and it is still running. The car has a little over 184000 miles on it and it is still running fine. There were never any major defects, except for one tire blowing out. Other than that we never had to replace anything. IT has been in one major accident where the whole front right side was totaled. The right turn sigal broke. The repairs were covered by insurance, and it only took about a week to repair. Just recently, the battery had a minor problem, but it was fixed by jumping the car. For a 10 year old car with almost 185000 miles, it runs quietley and fast! This car is a good car for new drivers, because it is a big safe car and sint hard to control..
