Mercury Grand Marquis
Strength:
Dependable, engine is powerful and takes abuse with ease. Very roomy and comfortable, especially for those in front. Very large trunk space and fairly well designed spare and jack storage. Soft and easy handling. Console and controls are arranged simply and intelligently. The car has small blindspots, especially for its size. Cruises very well in highway and interstate situations.
Weakness:
Fuel economy, has few problems but any that do appear keep coming back. Oil is very hard to check, at least in the '92 model. Auto-trans can be rough sometimes, mostly in in-town situations. The car's loose suspension makes changing a flat a rear workout. No cup holder. I received my Grand Marquis when I was 17 and it is my first car. I must admit I was very rough on it from the period of 4 months to 8 months after I began driving. I went over a 35 mph dip at 92 scraping the bottom into the pavement and leaving 1.5 inch groves, took a 15 mph turn at about 45 mph, and early on hit curves while fiddling with the radio at about 45. Through all of that, the car still works fairly well. It is simple and dependable and feels like sitting in a very cozy leather chair. It is not by far the best car ever made, but it keeps going. It has been a wonderful first car for me and has allowed me to learn the do's and do not's of driving without much consequence. That said, it does have drawbacks. First off, the oil is extremely hard to check. Sometimes it shows that it is virtually empty, but after adding just one quart, it shows it is fully filled. Other times it may take three or four. And I have not found a correlation with temperature or weather yet. Also, not much goes wrong, but that one thing that does, which in my case is electrical problems, keeps coming back. The engine is very dependable, amply powerful for normal road usage, and takes abuse with ease. It also had and insatiable appetite for gas and oil. I ride the car easy the days and my avg. mpg. in town is 16-18, on the interstate it is somewhere between 20-24, depending on the terrain. My last gripe is it does not have cup holders. A semi-luxary sedan without cup holders. However, that said, I would like to emphasize that I do have much respect for the car, and I feel it does have a significant place in the automobile world. If you can get your hands on a used one at a competitive price, go for it. I would not buy one new though. |

Grand Marquis GS
Strength:
trunk space.
Weakness:
Lack of power, auto trans, handles like a drunk elephant, brakes are about as good as using your feet, horrible interior, primitive engine and suspension, rear seat room, driving position, body on frame construction makes for rattles over bumps, the automatic constantly up shifts at horrible times, size makes it hard to park, styling looks to be the most boring design in the history of man, and rear mirror gets in your way all the time. OK so I was looking for a car to replace my beloved Saab 900 Turbo, it reached 200K miles and it was just time. I checked out the Grand Marquis at my Dad's request, he wanted me to get an american car this time. I tested a 2006 Grand Marquis GS. It was the worst car I had ever driven. First the car is big and heavy, over 4000lbs(bigger then most SUVS). I started to drive and realized that the V8 is the worst engine ever. My Saab had a 2.0L 4 cyl and produced almost as much hp as this car. It was slow and I was really afraid to get on the highway because I didnt think it was make it to speed in time. Seriously do no buy this car. Similar Products Used: Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300C, Pontiac GTO, |

Mercury Grand Marquis LS
Strength:
A great combination of comfort, power, value and gas mileage.
Weakness:
The soft suspension adds comfort at the cost of handling. That said, the car cruises nicely at 90 mph. It is generally not an issue unless you are running with sport sedans costing 3x's as much on twisty roads. A classic piece of Detroit at its finest!

no lighted cruise control controls The '02 model is exactly as described. Riding on my living room couch at 80 mph. I had a '95 GS that was my pride and joy. I valued it more than my F-150. My '02 is problem free, and performance is top notch. I am not an "old guy" by anyone's standard except the military's. My '02 looks fast and mean just sitting in the parking lot (the black paint job helps) and I would'nt trade her for diamonds or gold (maybe my next door neighbor). PRO's- plenty of leg room ( I am 6'3"),Plenty of HP for passing and getting the "hell out of dodge", standard Ford heaters(they will burn you out)and ice cold (refridgerate my beer) A/C. Comfortable as my easy chair, and effortless to controll. Sounds like a V-8 should, tough and mean, but with all the sleeper qualities. My '02 is more than the sum of all it's parts, and speaks volumes about "QUALITY IS JOB ONE". The only drawbacks are the lack of the litle light that states the cruise control is engaged ("cruise" is lit on my '01 F-150) and lack of lighted controls for the cruise control. My advice to you- buy one, you'll never buy anything else. My advice to Bill Ford- If you discontinue this line, you are an IDIOT Similar Products Used: 1995 Grand Marquis GS, 1995 Lincoln Town Car, 1995 Grrand Marquis LS, 1997 Grand Marquis LS |

Grand Marquis
Strength:
The 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis that I currently own has the 4.6 liter V-8, dual exhaust and from a standstill has more power than one can imagine in this class. The ride is tight, responsive and more sensitive than those found in higher priced vehicles. As for average fuel economy I can leave Virginia Beach and cruise thru heavy traffic on I-95 up to Washington, DC at the average speed of 75 mph on less than a half tank of fuel. The large digital displays on the instrument panel make it easy to read and no guess work looking at the read outs for economy, distance, trip meters to engine temp and average speed is easily accessed. Conversion from MPH to KPH is a breeze. Lack of road noise is significantly reduced due also by the overall design. Trunk space is superior and the placement of both the fuel cut off and air ride on off switch is neatly tucked away to avoid the unintentional disconnect. Turning Radius is above average for a car of this size and is to me impressive.
Weakness:
The plastic covers on the headlamps seem to haze quickly thus reducing visibility. In both my 89 and 97 Grand Marquis LS both rear window regulators were the first under warranty to break down. A sudden burst hose in the coolant line caused a catastrophic disruption of the Automatic Climate Control as fail safe after fail safe engaged. This did prevent the engine block from suffering damage but in no way saved the Climate Control culminating in a nearly 1,300 dollar repair in 2005. I bought the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis LS for its safety rating, durability, style, comfort and color and purchased it new. I've been a ford fan since my father gave me a 1969 LTD that reached over 200k miles. Since then I've owned a long lasting '89 Grand Marquis LS which lead to my purchase of the 97 Grand Marquis LS when basic body styles changed. This car serves me well for my needs and may be slightly larger than the average full size vehicle and I find the over all ownership to have been practically maintenance free. I'm approaching 120k and have not yet needed a tune up. Oil changes and minor maintenance a side I would be hard pressed to purchase anything less. My 1997 Grand Marquis LS was apparently manufactured in Canada and came with a heated windshield unbeknownst to me until a stray piece of road debris caused me to have the windshield replaced. The 4.6 liter V-8 is not only economical but proves itself in the delivery when one hits the excellerator. The suspension is not typical of a luxury sedan and offers the driver a hands on experience. It glides over railroad tracks effortlessly, covers up the jitter on cobble stone. The suspension is definately not reminicent of a marshmallow. Over all I am quite happy with this particular make and model.
