this car siunds great looks good and drives beautifully. This car would eat a camero for lunch. There isn't much on the road that can touch it.
Weakness:
I don t like the stock hub caps If you can find one in decent condition, I suggest buying, the looks the feeling of driving the car and the power it has under the hood is top of the line. The stock 302 has enough kick to it to put you back in your seat. Its a beautiful car. Similar Products Used: compares to a mustang of the same era because they were pretty much the same thing the parts were almost identical the engine compares to the Chevy 305. |

Body style is great. I commuted 204 miles a day for three years and it was great in city traffic.
Weakness:
When I back up, the brakes make a horrible sound. The dealer said it was normal and would eventually stop, the first time I took my car in. The second time the dealer claimed they removed some kind of coating on them and the sound would go away. It never has. The locks lock and unlock on their own so when you are clearing snow from the car or something similar you have to be very careful you don't lock yourself out. The dealer explained how the locks work like I was stupid. The locks still don't work right. The radio cuts off every time the headlights are turned on.The dealer has ignored this problem. The transmission died at 74000 miles, Ford paid for everything but $600.00 of the bill. The right passenger side wheel bearing needed replacing and the car was stranded in the repair shop for a day because the snap rings were not put on during the original manufacturing of the car and we had to wait for some to be delivered from Detroit. Right now I am waiting for a spindle assembly to be delivered because the left front bearing needed replacing and it turned out that the rotors were warped, the spindle cracked and the hub was worn beyond use. Which by the way can be ordered as a unit and not seperate parts to save money. I was so disgusted I called Ford Headquarters and spoke to someone. The suit thought I was being unreasonable for expecting Ford to Fed Ex a part to the repair shop in 24 hours. As to all the problems, he wasn't too concerned. The alternator died at 76000 and the Ford dealership claimed none were in stock, resulting in a day of work missed. Three tires have been replaced and two tire rims have been bent and needed to be replaced. The Ford dealership is run by twentysomethings who blame me for the car problems or ignore my complaints. When I called the Ford Consumer Line a woman told me that a car is like a person, one year you can be perfectly healthy and the next you can get a bad cold. Nobody knows when they will get sick. If you have no other use for your money, you could buy one and plan to spend most of it on repairs. It would be a good car for someone who does not drive a lot. My Cougar has the 3.8L V6 with an automatic. The V6 has pretty good power. It has the power door locks and windows. The paint and interior are very nice considering its a '91 with 150,000 miles on it....and its never been in a garage or carport! It came with a AM/FM radio, but when I bought it, I put in a Pioneer CD player...I replaced the two rear speakers with 6X9 in boxes that lay on the rear seat...the two front speakers are still factory, but still sound decent. I also replaced the factory wheels with some aftermarket wheels.....My Cougar looks pretty good.
Weakness:
I like the V6, but I'd rather have the 5.0 V8....in '91 they put the 5.0 in the Cougars....the engine could run better and transmission could run better but what can I expect from a high-mileage vehicle. All Cougars (and Thunderbirds) from '89-'97 came with an Independent Rear Suspension-IRS-most vehicles don't have this....Ford just now put it on the '99 Cobras!....Everyone says that the IRS has better handling over a regular rear end, but the IRS cost twice as much from what the Ford dealerships have told me! If the IRS breaks, you better get your wallet ready! Maintaining my Cougar is not bad at all......except.....the oil filter is in a VERY hard-to-get-to place!....It is located an inch or two away from the frame and there are wiring harnesses around it.....I've had many bloody knuckles from this sucker...then when you finally get the old filter off....it takes you twice as long to put the new one on there! The oil filter location is probably the worst thing about maintaining my Cougar. The other crappy thing is that the AC compressor is apparently very weak.....I had to get it replace a couple of years back....this seems to be a problem with the Cougars with the V6. My Cougar has been wonderful to me.....it has proven its dependibility, and has been very economical. Other consumers have had similar and different experiences with Cougars, but I've had a great one.....probably the best thing that I'll remember about this car is that its never left me stranded on the road once over it's life on 150,000 miles.........except for two flat tires, but hey, flat tires can happen to anyone. Overall my 1991 Cougar is a well-built car. Similar Products Used: Well, the Cougars are no true road-hugging sports car like a Mustang, but they aren't like those tiny imports.....the Cougar is a good in between car....it has plenty of room, good looks, decent power, and decent handling....although if you want more power opt for the V8. |

-handling compares with cars that cost $30,000 more
Weakness:
-lagging shift I just picked this car up a few weeks ago with the works (power everything, sunroof, v6 sport and convenience groups, leather), and I coudn't be happier. Its straight line acceleration is pretty good, but slowed down by a lagging shift from first to second, but it absolutely rips through the turns. The handling can easily be compared to cars twice the original price. The car just takes off after 30 mph and doesn't look back. It sounds great, not as great as a V8, but I am more than satisfied by my cat's growl, and it will get even better when I get my borla dual exhaust system. The looks are certainly love or hate, but in my experience more people tend to like them than not. The interior is a work of art, and has usable back seats, as well as a hatchback design that will swallow a mountain bike with both wheels attached. Best of all, I have the pride of owning an American made car, not a German one made by companies that used slave labor during WW2, or an ugly Japanese rice rocket that sounds like a screaming girl. However, owning an American car has it's downsides. The car lacks the precision fit and finish of the afore-mentioned cars, and has a slight rattle coming from the trunk concealer, and something will probably fail sooner or later. Oh yeah, the front cup holder is the biggest piece of crap I have ever seen. It is nothing but dead weight and I will probably rip it out of the car and burn it. Whoever invented this style of cupholder should be shot in both legs and both arms. Comparisons: I've driven and been driven in 'stangs and 'stang GTs. They both have better straight line speed (the 'stang only slightly, the GT very significantly, the GT could probably beat the cougar starting in second gear), but both have absolutely no chance against the cougar in the handling department, there would have to be some kind of handicap employed like engaging the parking brake on the cougar throughout the course. I test rode a '99 celica gt, much, much slower than the cougar. the '00 gts was a lot nicer, and would probably pull away from a gougar for the first few moments, but lacks the torque to keep the lead for very long. The gts was way too easy to steer, which some people seem to like, but felt loose and scary in tight turns to me. I recommend this car to anyone who appreciates great handling over straight line peel outs and wants a good looking and unique car. Similar Products Used: various mustangs, various rice rockets |

This is a Beast! This car came with a 5.0 TBI engine, and nasty ol' granny spokes. I did a few engin mods, and replaced the granny's with 10 spokes off a Turbo Coupe, installed Falken Ziex (205/50) tiers and dropped the car to a respectable level so the tires would fill the wheel wells nicely. This car hauls, will smhoke the tires off the rims, handles well when properly equiped for such a heavy car. Very easy to modifiy, and work on. Very safe, I hit a tree at 60 mph and flipped it forward then rolled down a hill. Every one was able to get up and walk out after the air assult was over with. Recommender to parents who worry a lot, and teenagers than are nutz (like I was)
Weakness:
Gas guzzler, only certain crowds like the looks, trunck rattles even after dynamatted, well I guess it should with 3 JL 10's and a Fosgate Punch 200 Bridged. Dash and doors rattle slightly on bumpy roads, but hey it was 14 years old. This was my very first car I owned and is still my very favorite. Very cheap to maintain, mods are cheap. Very safe car due to its weight/size. I'm looking to buy another with the same package, don't get the 3.8 V6, its a true hog, guzzles gas for a V6. Sporty Feel
Weakness:
The engine sounds powerful but doesn't have that great of pickup I would recommend this car to anyone seeking a sporty feel at a cheap price. I hear they are coming out with 2 more powerful versions of the cougar but r also jacking up the price. Its a great value, but don't expect racing type speeds. The automatic tranny takes all fun out of the car, its sluggishly slow. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Great looks, comfortable, awesome handling, good controls. 5-Speed transmission with V6 is an ABSOLUTE must!!! I was getting 29.5 Mpg.
Weakness:
I just sold it at 58000 miles (I drive a lot). Overall I enjoyed the car but I definately had some issues. The brake rotors are paper thin and will warp if you go through a puddle on a hot day. Had them replaced (all 4) and resurfaced as well. When it is 90+ degrees outside, the moonroof will sometimes not open and needs a hand. The driver's side window would not go up all the way (there was an involuntary recall on this). At 40k miles the driver door handle linkage came off (had to get in through pass side). At 50k miles the engine started to ping when accellerating. This removed all enjoyment from the car. I had ALL recommended services to this car and I treated it well. I paid 17,400 (autobytel.com) sticker was 19,800. Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi Eclipse - Dodge Avenger |
