smooth ride. good gas mileage car. seat confortable for long trips. Well designed car. Older hyundais were really ugly

Weakness:

radio sound poor. Should have a light under the hood, for night inspections

Smooth car, no bad for a 4 cyl. engine. I drove it 120 mph for 15 sec. I never thought could make it. After that the TMPS warning light came on. Weird. I checked the tire pressure and just one tire was lower but the TMPS warning light is still on. I hope didn't happen because the speed.

Strength:

Fast acting car, very smooth ride, inside cabin has small wind noise,5 speed automatic shift, very good on GAS!!

Weakness:

Radio isn't loud enough. Why can't they put the chrome tip on the 4 cylinders??

Well, I was skeptical about purchasing this Hyundai because it was a Hyundai and felt like I was "stepping down" having owned Nissan Altima, Chrysler 300, Honda Accord. But for the price and since my altima was wrecked, I bought the car out of desparation. I thought hey 10 year 100k miles warranty.hmm nice but I promised myself I wasn't keeping this car long.

Well Guys It's been a year and I'm still driving the car. I am very pleased with the handling and the fast reaction I get when I press on the accelarator.

I could have sworn I bought a V-6 but this car is actually a 4 cylinder, the car is a strong competitors among the other V-6's on the highway. For those who complain the transmission doesn't shift fast enough, I admonish you to use the 5 speed Manual shift and take control of your own shifting and I promise you the car will drive so fast it will literally scare you.

Before purchasing this car, I went to check out the new Honda Accords and I'm a big guy and tall, the Honda accord was a TIGHT fit and I had difficulties manuevering inside this car whereas the Hyundai Sonata, I had plenty of room legwise and was very comfortable in this car.

I must say Hyundai has stepped up their game and can actually outrank the Honda Accords...and trust me I'm a bona-fide fan of the Hondas because a 93 Accord was my first car and my first love who stayed with me for 10 years until it got stolen.. (Ok Guys I need a moment......)

The car rides very comfortably with 5 adults in the car, the only thing I have to complain about is the stereo, the radio isn't simply loud enough!! I guess I'll have to add amplifiers inside to maximize the potential of my speakers.

Strength:

Attractive price tag for what you get.
Pretty comfortable ride.
mileage not bad.
A lot of the options on other vehicles come standard on the sonata.

Weakness:

Not much headroom for taller torso drivers. The sunroof gets in the way.
Weak paint on plastic parts.
Lack of parts available to the public.
That damn airbag light.

Overall a decent car for the money but does come with some problems. The paint on the plastic on the front of the car that covers the bumper, and the grill area ect. started to chip and crack not long after we got the car. It has gotten to the point now where it looks pretty bad. I have noticed other sonatas on the road with the same problem. The dealer has warned us about the timing belt problem that the sonatas have. We are trying to decide whether we want to keep the car so we haven't had a new timing belt installed yet. The air bag light has come on several times. Each time we take it to the dealer and he fixes it free of charge (something about a connecter coming loose underneath the drivers seat). The cd player quit working almost as soon as we drove it off the lot. Not a big deal to us since we only listen to the radio anyway. My biggest complaint is the lack of available parts for routine maintenance. I like to service my own vehicles, and found it difficult at times to get parts at the local auto parts stores. Parts as simple as an air filter. Oh, and don't even think of changing the spark plugs/wires yourself. They are impossible to get to without taking the engine halfway apart. But, really for the amount of car you get for the money, it's not that bad of a deal. Very similar to the Ford Taurus in terms of size and ride.

Smooth ride.
Roomy.
Worth money paid.
Good pickup on first 2 gears.
Decent stock sound system.
Tiptronic.
Very Responsive.
Warranty.

Weakness:

Doesnt handle the best, seems "floaty" around turns.
Transmission doesnt shift well on inclines.
Both fog lights burned out quick.
A/C can seem glitchy.
Downshifting to first in Tiptronic feels rough on transmission.

I bought this car in febuary of 2006 in spite of my 96 a4 that was sending me to the shop every month. I wanted a car with a reputation of being reliable. So far the car hasn't sent me to the shop which is good. But im going to say what I have to say in the strengths and weaknesses.

Weakness:

seat not very wide. The lower end of the seat belt comes too close to the driver's and passenger's seat, causing your hips to press against it. In a short drive, this begans to be annoying, and hurting the side of your hips.

My vehicle has very fine noticeable scratches on it. Although this was done after my purchase, and I don't know how, it seems that the paint job on my car is of a very low grade.

If you like spending countless hours without your car while its being repaired than this is the car for you!

This car has been a nightmare! It has had one problem after another since first purchased. Everything from the windows not working to the oil seal leaking and dripping on sensors and spark plugs which all had to be replaced ($1100.00) But the BEST is that we just had it towed to the dealership because the entire carriage is disintegrating from rust! Thats right!, rust! I dont remember reading anything on the sticker for the car when I purchased it NEW that read "CAR WILL BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN 6 1/2 YEARS!" I'm sure I would have looked at something else. Maybe A nice Ford. Hyundai has been anything but helpful. I will NEVER purchase another car from this company.

Strength:

Power, handling, ride quality, front and rear space, trunk size, warranty, gas mileage (I get 30 mpg combined with the V6).

Weakness:

Transmission seems to have a hard time downshifting to get up steeper hills, though not necessarily a concern if you live in an area with flat roads. Also, the stereo is acceptable, but nothing to brag to your friends about.

Well, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about buying a hyundai after driving one or two as rentals. A car this good I would have expected to cost around 30k! The new Sonata was definitely a good buy! I had considered buying a Chrysler 300, but the price was much higher for the same or even much less car. I also live in PA where the winters require either front or all-wheel drive to be of any use. Pricewise, you cannot beat the level of comfort and the ride quality, even with the low profile 17" tires which I have. I definitely recommend this car to anyone who feels the need for a practical car with lots of amenities for a great price.

Strength:

Smooth, comfortable, sporty, but roomy. Nice sound system, good reception, attractive interior, reliable

Weakness:

Pick-up not that great, I do recognize the gear-hunting up hills that I've been reading--still not bad.

I bought the car before really getting an idea of what could be wrong with it because the salesman gave me a 2-day money back period to try out the car. OK, I liked it, but there were a few flaws (aren't there always with used cars?). The air bag light was on (a recall item), the air sometimes didn't work, there was a door open light on when all doors were closed, then, then after about 400 miles, the check engine light came on. So, I took to Hyundai dealer in northeast Phila. They took a long time, but they fixed all but the air for $1000. (I declined repair since dealer wanted $400 for a AC control assembly and I got for $35 used--will have work done by small garage.) Sounds like a lot, but not really. Timing belt and crank sensor caused check engine light and this is a big job. Apparently, timing belts are to be changed (even if still working) at 60,000 miles because if it breaks, it can cause a lot more expensive damage--perhaps $2000 for new engine. Air bag light only needed resetting, transmission needed new speed sensor ($177) and door switch needed replacing ($59). Included in the $1000 was general "check up" to ensure reliability (a wise investment if you're going to buy a used car). Now it drives great, it looks great and for under $4000 (including the A/C repair), I've got myself a nice, new-looking, reliable car. I sincerely believe that the previous owner(s) mistreated this car and that's why it was in the shape I found it. Apparently, this car is very sensitive to poor maintenance, so consider the source when you read/hear bad reviews on 99-2001 Sonata. It has a smooth ride, soft-sounding engine, it's quiet over bumps (not like my 91 Taurus), and it IS reliable. After all, I did DRIVE the car to the dealer with (check engine light on) a bad timing belt and crank sensor. Most people are towed with those problems.

Great commuter car.

Weakness:

Radio reception sometimes stinks. Headlights and fog lights burn out very quick and need replacing alot (5 to 6 times a year). Cam sensor is being replaced for the 2nd time.

I absolutely loved this car and had to have it. So, my husband went out and found the exact one I wanted and brought it home for me. I have been a little disappointed with how many times it's gone back to the shop, for minor problems. I just dropped it off at the shop for the 2nd brake problem. If you go over 30MPH and try to stop, the entire car shakes. They are telling me this is normal. I don't believe it. They said I need to replace the brake pads and have the rotors cut. When this was in the shop at 13k miles, the same problem was happening and the dealer told me that it was the ABS. We are finally contacting corporate thanks to my husband knowing someone there and maybe this will get worked out.
