Model Reviewed: Honda Accord SE 4 door auto

Strength:

Excellent fit and finish. Excellent assisted ventilation controls. Sound system OK but not impressive. Good 4 cylinder engine, has adequate power and is fuel efficient.

Weakness:

Auto transmission hesitates a bit (not "crisp"). Auto Transmission gives the impression of being too "fragile". Interior noise level could be reduced.

The car feels rock-solid, expecially when going over bums. The 4 cylinder engine, combined with the auto transmission, has adequate power and is fuel-efficient. A little bit more of low-end torque would probably improve the car's performance when climbing the rocky mountains.

THe car has lots of trunk space and rear passenger leg room. Honda engineers could have done a better job sound proofing the car à la Camry.

The automatic transmission, as it usually is with Honda products, is the weak point of the Accord. It is electronically controlled and shifts smoothly, but it lacks the "crspness" of Toyota transmissions. It sometimes hesitates and does not readily downshifts when the drivers expects it. It also had it share of manufacturing defects in the past years, and may be prone to breakdowns. Again, "test-drive before you buy": take the *actual* car you'll ge getting on a test drive before you sign on the dotted line and check for smooth transmission operation and vibration (see below).

When I picked up my car, I notice a slight shimmy in the steering wheel. After 3 visits to the local dealer, the problem was still not fixed. I had to go to a special tire shop where they re-balanced all 4 tires using an ultra-precise new balancind machine, which finally solved the problem.
Apparently, the Accord's front end is prone to resonnance, and a very slight imbalance of the tires (even 0.25 oz) leads to a steering wheel shimmy.

Before you pick up your car, I recommend that you test-drive it and verify that it does not have a shimmy between 55-70 mph.

Toyota Camry: Camry's auto transm. is much better and smoother than the Accord's. However, the Accord's interior, including the list of standard equipment, makes it a better choice.

I love this car!

Weakness:

nothing so far! But its black so every little flaw seems magnified! Its already got quite a few scratches!

After I added on a few cosmetic options like the unde4r body spoiler kit and fog lights, it was about 27000. But definetly worth it!

Strength:

Comfort, reliability, A/C, luxurious look and feel, security (encoded keys), and acceleration.

Weakness:

Over-sensitive accelerator from 0 - 20KM/hr, cabin light does not stay on long enough when the key is removed. Cup holder spaces too close together and too close to armrest. No pocket on the back of driver's seat.

This is my first car I financed on my own and I think it should have been my second car. I was looking at a Civic SI but I decided an Accord was more practical based on what the car was intented. This is definitely a family car with extraordinary value and attention to detail. Despite the 4 cylinders the engine is responsive given the Accord's weight. Handling is sharp. CD stereo is surprisingly crisp and loud. Seats are supportive and comfortable. The cup holders are somewhat of a pet peeve being too small to hold 2 large Mcdonald's cups and too close to the armrest. The rear cup holders seem cheap when the armrest is exposed. It looks like something should cover it at times. The seat height seems too low to see the end of the front hood. Even at its highest point I am unable to accurately measure the passenger side front corner, which can make parking tricky. Overall the car is a solid family with ultra refinements over several generations but not a car for the single 20-something male.

Model Reviewed: Accord EX

Strength:

* Styling is exceptional. Very German. (Honda is master at this: compare the look of the Civic and the 330 BMW series)
* Control design (push button vs. slider) and placement (all within good reach of driver AND passenger)
* Excellent acceleration for a 4 cyl. (not as fast as my dad's 91 EXR though)
* Very roomy interior and trunk
* Hard paint with solid primer (it also pays to get rust proofing here in Canada)
* AC is still strong but will go soon I've heard from other owners

*

Weakness:

* Horn placement (I wonder how many 91-93 Accord driver have told the police at the scene of an accident that "I couldn't beep the horn in time" because they were fumbling to find the horn button which is the size of a quarter!!) Honda dropped the ball on this one.
* Nothing else

since that 1983 Prelude, my old man has only bought Honda and I've followed suit. The high repair bills are worth it for one reason: high resale. 3.5 years ago, I bought my 1993 for 11,500 CDN and could sell it for $8000 today even with 176K on it. enough said.

btw: my dad just bought a 2001 Accord and sold my mom's 1993 to my brother- all in the family, i guess!

I've driven Honda since 1997 in the following order:
1983 Prelude : very peppy, tight handling, nice styling for the time, bad rusting
1986 Accord: a reliable car but boring. It had a crappy transmission and rust problems
1993 Accord: my mom's, see above
1989 Prelude: my first car, very sporty and peppy (perhaps the best styling ever on a Honda other than the NSX. In terms of styling, there hasn't been any car as distinguished as the 89-91 Prelude series.
1991: my dad's car which I drove ocassionaly. Lots of power, nimble steering, very stylish.

great car. Honda owners want more from their cars but don't realize how bad American cars are compared to them. We take for granted what we have.

Strength:

Good pick-up on 4-cyl (get some good spark plugs and use prem. gas)
Nice look (Tint the windows, put on some chrome wheels)
Awesome acoustics (gut the stereo, put in a nice system)
SO very easy to add-on features (Internal UV lights, additional speakers) - All floor panels and kickboards and door panels snap on and off fairly easily, making fun upgrades a cinch. Everything is easily accessible. It is roomy, and has a nice big trunk. Nice safety features too!

Weakness:

Gas gauge is faulty - needle level is constantly fluctuating
Tell-tale rust spots near rear wheels - Slow power windows, not enough windshield-wiper control options, loose and choppy transmission, brakes are quite loose, headlight covers discolor too quickly - paint easily chipped around key hole ( I am really nit-picky...none of these "weaknesses" are severe, just details...)

Well, unfortunately, I just had a bad experience with my tranny. It is shot at 95K miles... That is atypical of Honda. I like the feel, the glide, the sound.... If you are a whiner with road noise, take off your door panels and shove some carpet insulation up in there. Put the insulation around the trunk wall, behind your plastic cover... It is an incredible acoustical difference on the Subwoofer. Honda has good cabin design for sound dispersement. It is a good car for the money, if you take care of it. Just be nice on the road, cause this car (when properly displayed) is a real knock-out ; makes you do crazy things. This car is GREAT for single college guys, or newlyweds that want to look and feel wealthy. It is reliable in all types of weather.
Fantastic Buy. I promise.

Fast, stylish. Ohh did I forget to say stylish and fast:)

Weakness:

tweaks here and there, I would say the gas gauge only goes 3/4 but I'am sick of hearing people complain about such a simple thing.

If you are working with a stock Accord you will have problems racing civics and integras so go out and buy yourself some aftermarket parts trust me you wont be complaining. Because after reading dozens of reviews I noticed that most of the accord owners think they own racing Nas-Cars and that they are supposed to be super duper fast from the lot but if you want blazing speed go to one of those aftermarket places and buy yourself some headers, pulleys, clutches, intakes, etc.., just buy it all and trust me you wont be complaining again, you'll be to busy laughing while waiting for your opponent at the finish line.

compared to accord 90 and to 2000 and 2001 the accord 94 vtec is to my knowledge the fastest in the market.

Model Reviewed: Accord EX Coupe w/leather

Strength:

Gas mileage, Styling, features and overall quality

Weakness:

I'd love about 10 to 15 more HP, but it's not a big deal.

I really like this car. Mine is the 2 Dr Coupe EX with leather, with the 4 cylinder engine and 5 sp manual. It is very well made, with lots of interior room.I like having the 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS and side airbags, safety is a big concern for me. I get 26 to 28 mpg locally and just got 38 mpg on a recent trip, using regular gas.
I looked at a lot of other cars before choosing this one and I like as much today as when I bought it 6 months ago.
The sound system is good, love having the moonroof and it looks good too.
I drove a 2001 VW Passat for 250 miles last week, it was a base model with their 1.8 turbo 4 cy. The cost was just over my Accord. I liked the Accord more. While the VW is a nice driving car, it only had marginally more power than my car. The handling was similiar.
My interior was MUCH nicer and larger and my car has A LOT more standard equipment, such as leather interior, moonroof, alloy wheels and 6 disc CD changer. While this stuff is availible on the VW, it costs more.
I am a happy Accord Owner, and I'm really glad I choose the Coupe.

Strength:

This car runs like a champ! I bought the car at 115,000 miles and it runs like the day I bought it, now with 185,000 miles. Interior holds up outstanding, even in the Florida sun! No mechanical problems at all!

Weakness:

A bent rim has caused faster than normal tire wear and more frequent alignment and tire rotation. This problem can be easily fixed. The interior door handle brackets are cracked, which is common. Also, the antenna does not go all the way down.

Like most Accord owners, it does stand in the way of buying a new car. It is extremely reliable and has survived many long highway trips. Keep up with routine maintenance (oil) and timing belts (every 80K miles) and this car will run for a long time!
