Ford Thunderbird (2002 - 2005) Midsize | Compact

DESCRIPTION

After being on hiatus for several years, Ford introduced a new Thunderbird for 2002. Returning to the original formula for the Thunderbird, the latest version had a two-seat coupe/convertible layout like the first-generation Thunderbird and retrofuturistic styling to match.

Strength:

Very dependable and gets it if you put your foot in it. passing has never been a problem. very nice amount of trunk for its size (can fit three-four golf bags :-) Seating is very comfortable, and ample room for all, except for those stuck behind a large driver. Handling around sharp curves is second to none. No blindspots. currently getting 23 MPG! unlike many other reviews, my TB has not spent much time in the shop (a reflection of differences in care and driving habits?, you decide :-) i've never had to replace or work on the engine or transmaission, nor have i ever had to re-charge the a/c, or replace the "heads"...dream car...thank you ford

Weakness:

the best i can do here is to mention the things that actually went wrong, going wrong, and what i just don't like. KEEP IN MIND...this is a '94 TB and its currently 2007....150,000 miles....here we go...
-those god foresaken cup holders...only accessible to the driver and exposes the enitre inner counsel to spill risk.
-the automatic antenna works 50% of the time now
-had a fuel injector stick open on me, tricking my EX-mechanic into thinking that my enigine was "shot"
-engine "hums" every once in awhile when shifting between 1-2 and 2-3 gears, dealer mechanic couldn't figure it out, been doing it for 50,000 miles or so, said has no negative effect on car.
-replaced o2 sensor, serp belt (twice), brakes (twice), burns tires! (on fourth set) starting to burn oil (usually a quart low by 3000 miles)
-gas guage quit working 30000 miles ago
-paint fades on the roof
-headlights are very faded which makes driving at night that much more fun
-"idiot" or system warning lights are way to bright, check engine light, O/D off light, etc...
-Check engine light will just pop on from time to time then just shut off with nothing wrong with it...started at about 30000 miles.
-plastic molding around seats is prone to breakage, along with my blinker lights for some odd reason.
-shifting time between drive and reverse is a little longer than i'd like
-replaced driver side power window motor once
-winter driving is a nightmare, with its light weight end and rear wheel drive..i find the ditch at least once a winter...
Overall, nothing huge has gone wrong, just wanted to mention everything i could think of that is a negative, theres just not enough room for all the positives, hence the lengthier weakness section.

Overall experience...Great! i'm going on TEN years with my V8 4.6 TB...and approaching 150,000 miles, i couldn't be happier. Of course it has its faults and things gone wrong, but after ten years of wear and tear, plus, northern illinois winters (with no garage cover), what car wouldn't?

Love the V-8! The faster you go the better it feels. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Weakness:

none i can think of.

I love my red T-Bird. Its red, sexy looking and fun to drive. I always get compliments on it. My husband said its a chick car. I have to agree. I keep telling him I'd like to do a topless run. Its comfortable driving everywhere and anywhere. I occassionally let my 18 year old daughter drive it so she can show it off. I do not let my car sit. It's for driving, not storing.

Lousy cupholders

I loved my T-Bird. Bought it new in November 1995, with 8 miles on odometer. Beautiful Moonlight Blue. I kept this car for 10 years, putting 130,000 miles on it. I replaced the o2 sensors, tires, breaks, a/c once, and transmission at 100,000 miles. People always thought it was still new. Took care of it until the bitter end when I was t-boned by a teenager at an intersection. The car was totalled, but it saved my hide. Blue book was $3800, but insurance paid me $4500 due it my meticulous maintenance history. This was a good car as look as you take care of it. I replaced it with a 2005 Ford Taurus, which I love also, but I miss my 2-door fun T-Bird.

The worst of the worst. I bought this car new. I have had to have the PLASTIC Intake cover replace once at a cost of $1500.00, the pipe that runs through the head of the engine to the heater 3 times at $450.00 each. The rotors 3 times, although they did cover the first time under warranty. The mass air sensor 4 times (2 times under warranty), 3 thermostats, etc etc etc. Piece of Junk

Weakness:

Sunroof likes to leak every few years if you don't replace the seals.

I've had this car for 11 of it's 19 years. Bought it after an almost fatal crash in an 84 Cougar LS.
Aside from being a big old beater, I love this car. Aside from normal wear & tear replacements (brakes, belts, hoses) I haven't done an excessive amount of work on it.
When i got it it had around 80k miles on it, now we're about to crest the 170k mark. It runs strong and has yet to fail to start no matter how cold it is. Also the best damn snow driving car. I routinely drive it from my house to pick up my Mom to drive her to work. And SHE has a 2002 Taurus!
It's been a great overall car. The 5.0 302 V-8 was one of the best motors Ford ever put in production. I replaced the head gaskets last year and gave it a tune up. That's the only engine work I've had done in 11 years and almost 100k miles.
I had a 97 Limited Edition with the 4.6 V-8. It was a pretty car and everyone loved it. But the stereo sucked and we won't go there about the intake manifold. Ford really dropped the ball there, and it disappointed me. The car was never the same after the intake was replaced, when it was lost in an accident I didn't cry over it too much lol.
I'll be hanging on to old faithful here as long as I can. Would like to fix the a/c, but it's not in teh mix right now.

When that V-8 opens up look out!
The moon roof
Her sexy body
even @ almost 180,000 she is still going!

Weakness:

Well living in a cold climate and with her being a rear wheel drive car, and with all that power going to those rear wheels, driving in the snow becomes an enchanting dance of sorts :)

This thunder bird is my first car. I bought her for $850. That was a steal, but it came at a cost: the intake manifold had gone out and the car wasn't running. But when your 19 and you see that engine and the body (green) of the car, and all the possiblities...well you get the picture. So after having the manifold put on (parts and labor only $350) and other minor things done, I had her rolling on the streets. A few months went by and the car kept "dying" on me when I was moving or turing real slow. Turns out I needed a fuel pump. That ran my pockets $400. She's a street cruiser, a "fat mans" mustang, and I'm in love with her. The only problem that I'm experiencing now is that when I push on the gas it jerks like it isn't getting enough gas. I put 89 in her because 87 and 93 the jerking motion just gets worse. If anybody has any suggestions e-mail me. Now mind you this is with 178,400 miles on her!

Model Reviewed: Thunderbird

Strength:

Great looking car, easy to spin the tires, draws plenty of attention. The car is all around solid. Acceleration at highway speeds is good, and not bad off the line while racing.

Weakness:

Ford/American. Also for a V8, it could have a little more pick up. Driving in the winter is an art with this car. No weight in the back of a rear wheel drive car=annoying on hills in winter. The Bird also seems to like 93 octane, and it is a bit heavy on gas.

I bought this car in the St.Lawrence river area when I was on vacation. This is my first car, and I couldn't ask for anything better. This car has good stock sound (of course with a V8) and its duals. The Thunderbird is easy to mod, and I haven't had any huge problems with it. Besides routine maintenance, I have had to do one major repair. Living in NY and having a 1996, the emissions test killed me. I had a cylinder misfiring, and had to replace all the O2 sensors. Other than that, the car has had no problems (currently 67,000 mi).
