Strength:

wonderful solid riding car! i've had my taurus for almost 3 years and have been more than happy/satisfied w/the handling and dependability. for the past several weeks here in w.v. there has been an unusually heavy amount of snow. roads have been hazardous but this taurus (all weather tires) takes it like a trooper! have had no mechanical issues other than the defroster. not quite at 60k miles, am hoping it continues to run this well as miles pile on.
handles safely and well on the windy hilly w.v. roads!

Weakness:

am not seeing the gas mileage (even on interstate) to be close to what is listed. can understand, due to the terrain, except should get much better on interstate when i drive south. never come above 20mpg on hwy, and that was in flat south lousiana!

well made solid car. would recommend to anyone who wants a dependable mid-priced vehicle.

Strength:

Beautiful design, very strong performance

Weakness:

Buttons need to be designed better

When I decided to replace my Maxima, I decided to look at the American cars first. I wanted something with a lot of power, but can also serve as a family car. I chose the Ford Taurus SHO. I have no regrets. It's a beautiful car, very powerful and yet very smooth and quiet. Nice and roomy with a beautiful interior as well. I'm shocked how advanced this car is. It's full of technological options.

The only complaint I would have is that the radio buttons, expecially the volume and tuning knob are way too small. There is excess space on the center console so there is no need for such small buttons and knobs. Also, the trunk release is on the passenger side of the center console for some reason. Also, the car is huge, but the rear legroom is not huge. Part of the reason is they made the trunk huge. I would have sacrificed some trunk space to increase the rear passenger space. I think passengers get priority of space over luggage.

Other than that, I'm very impressed with Ford and their new lineup. I love the Taurus SHO.

Strength:

Quiet!!!
Good ride. Excellent car for long distances.
Decent handling and steering.
Great center console and cupholders.
Adjustable pedals (my wife loves them).
Good visibility.
Large trunk.
Good standard stereo system.

Weakness:

Generally obsolete design. Dated engine reluctant to rev above 2000rpm.
Large turning radius.
Terrible heater. I live in Calgary and driving at -20°C is a norm for me.
Weak brakes considering the weight of the vehicle.
High fuel consumption (12.0l+/100km city and 8.0l/100km highway).

I purchased slightly used 2003 Ford Taurus in August 2004. The vehicle had 16800 km on the odometer that time. After almost 5 years I am satisfied with the purchase once I accepted its limitations. It has been a reliable vehicle since day one. Handling, steering and cornering is very decent. However, turning radius is large making the car difficult to park in tight spots. Also, 4-speed automatic transmission is poorly mated to the engine (3.0l Vulcan V6 in my case) holding the engine below its optimal torque range. I may guess that was dictated by the goal of reducing fuel consumption which is still above average. I found standard fabric seats not comfortable but installing thick seat covers solved that important issue. I found standard Continental Contact Touring tires noisy and impossible to balance but the second set of Michelin tires solved that problem too.

Strength:

windsheild wipers are awesome, they go faster than any other car i've driven, fast enough even to shake the car when it's not moving. it's very roomy, which would be good if you have a lot of people in your car. i've had it full of grown adults and no one had an issue with leg room. the trunk is huge, very good for luggage, or people if you're into that. it has 92,000 miles and nothing huge has needed to be replaced, though i am anticipating it.

Weakness:

gas mileage is absolutely awful, and with how large the tank is i might as well be driving an f150. and everything else. honestly i hate this car except for the windsheild wipers.

i hate this car, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. i bought it from my uncle who had used it as his company car for a few years, which is why i got it for such a low price. if it had been anything over that (which surely it would have been from a dealer) it'd be a complete rip off.

i haven't had any huge problems with this car, but it's been well taken care of and there are still little baby problems. the thing that sprays wiper fluid on the windsheild has been broken for as long as i can remember, for example. when i put the windows up, they try to go too far and it makes this horrible noise and the whole door vibrates.

it also gets horrible gas mileage. i can go a month without filling up if i ONLY go to work and back, but i need my car for more than just that. i get between 18 and 21 miles per gallon. it's such a lightweight car in comparison to others i've driven, despite the size, the gas mileage should be better.

the interior is basically bare, there are no features to speak of. the stereo is on the same panel as the a/c, so forget about getting a nicer stereo. it doesn't have a center console (except for this silly tray that flips down), and the shifter thing is up behind the steering wheel like a truck instead of being in the center between the seats, and it gets stuck a lot going from park to anything else.

Strength:

Quality build you can get a nerly new car for a little over $10 K.

Great handling the snow.

Comfortable, predictable ride.

Weakness:

Vulcan engine is weak and bad gas mielage. 22 MPG mostly hwy but some city driving combined. I was expexting to get 26 - 27.

Get the 24 V duratec engin if you can find one; it has better horsepower.

I bought this car because it was so inexpensive. They are fire - selling the old model tauruses right now. I am very pleased with the build quality of car BUT the MPG is bad. 22 mpg not what I expected at all.

I will nto keep this car long term as it is bad on gas - had no idea it would be that low. I have had much more powerful v-6's that get 27 mpg.

The only thing that makes up for it is that I paid so little for it I can afford the gas premium.

Def. a family car haha
have few issues w/ age

So my dad's company has two Taurus'. One that my mom drives and the other that my dad drives. Both cars were purchased as loaner cars with 25,000 miles on each. Mom's Taurus has 110,000 miles and has only been in the shop for routine and a check engine light that turned out to be a leak in the gas cap. Dad's Taurus on the other hand has had a transmission and two heater cores. Other then that we have loved both of these cars.

Strength:

I actually like the car's overall styling, the power (even from the smaller 6 cylinder) is good, I find it kind of fun to drive, once it gets to highway speed, nothing too unpredictable. It's a large car, and will not move like anything smaller, but that's a given. The interior is nice enough, and holds up well to a bunch of college students travelling around in it. Gas mileage is pretty good - 28-31 mpg, on average, and that's with a bit of my lead foot, too. The stereo system's been mistaken for a custom one, I laughed out loud at that.

Weakness:

I wish it had a little more low-end power, and a CD player, but I can do without. The basic bones are there, and that's more than enough. The headlights don't appear to be very bright, going to get that looked at when I return home for the summer from college.

Okay a follow up to my last review:

Just had the car a year, so I figure a more accurate review could be a good thing.

The transmission problem was just a scare; everything checked out, and haven't had a problem with my transmission since I had the mechanic check out the clunk. The car's weight was grinding the gears when parked on even a low-grade slope, fixed by engaging the parking break, THEN shifting the transmission into 'park'. Whew.

Brakes were replaced, work perfectly fine since August. Was in an accident in December, easily fixed, and has driven fine since. The A/C Compressor just died this last week, when it blew it damaged the serpentine belt, a total cost of 800 to replace/repair, including labor costs. Since the car's been back with me, no problems whatsoever.

Regular maintenance is standard, and the next expense I'm looking at is replacement tires in August, if not November, perhaps.

Overall, it's given me a few stress headaches since I've owned it, but it's a nice looking, nicely appointed car, and I just hope some of the horror stories on here don't become mine.

Roomy, comfortable seating, good vision, NOT ugly, average to above average fit and finish, gas mileage (26mpg), good heat and AC, excellent trunk space, above average cup holders and center console, does great on icy/slick roads, reliable, tough.

Weakness:

Turn radius, road and wind noise (after about 50k miles.

This is my second Taurus. I use them for work and average 400 miles a day, five days a week. This car is your everyday, run of the mill, boring sedan. The car is not sleek, stylish, or overly impressive in any way. I've never been been over or underwhelmed by this vehicles performance. I put 189,000 miles on my first Taurus and only replaced the tires and wipers. I have 90,000 miles on my current Taurus and not counting the oil change every 3000 miles, I've replaced the tires and wipers only once.

well i bought this car because i wanted a sporty family sedan that i could still have some fun with. a friend at work had one and said his was great no problems,i really wanted a grand prix gtp or bonneville ssei as my wife and i already had a buick regal gs which all these cars share the supercharged 3.8l engine(great car by the way) but at the time i wasnt able to find any of these in my price range, normally im one to investigate a car on the internet for a while but in this case i went off of my friends recomendation. the car over all has been fine the only thing ive replaced is transmission cooler lines and done routine oil changes but the constant fear with this car after buying it is learning of the cam sprocket vailures on v8sho.com that ford refuses to do a recall on and they now have a class action law suit against them for which i am included. my sho hasnt given me any of the signs of the problem ie. loud ticking form the sproket area and i dont know if the previous owners had the cams welded the common cure for this problem,so with fingers crossed and a few more payments to get to the point where i may be able to trade it in with no negative equity i may just end up getting the bonneville ssei after all
