Strength:

I like the way it drives. It gets good gas milege.

I purchased this vehicle around Christmas in 2001, and I have had nothing put problems on it. I had to put new alternator and Battery in it. I had to have the wiring that connected to the battery replaced. A belt broke and I had to replace it. The real door window would not come down, and I had to replace the door motor switch. The abs light kept coming on and had to have the switch in dash replaced. The seat belts wore thin and I had to have them replaced. I had to have new brakes put on after I had it for six months, and I now need to have them replaced.

I had a ford contour before, and I didn't have nothing put problems on it too. I don't think the next vehicle I get will be a ford.

Strength:

awesome gas mileage, great pickup, fun to drive, good sound system

Weakness:

squeaky brakes, radio volume

When my dad's car broke down I was forced to buy a new car and we decided on a 2001 ZX3. I have no major complaints on this car. Besides getting the standard oil changes and a few recalls I have had no other reason to take the car in. The only problems with the car are that I had the brakes changed at 24,000 miles (by the dealer maybe that was the problem) and they are already squeaking at 36,000 miles. The radio kinda irritates me because when the volume is at 0 you can't hear it and then at 1 its really loud. I wish that there was some sort of middle ground there. I LOVE the pickup on this car. Also, the car sits kinda high so it's no problem getting in and out of the car. You just turn and get out which is cool. Besides the brakes and radio volume I can say that there is nothing about this car I don't like.

brakes (changed twice already) i recommend that u dont let the dealer replace them but go to some automechanic. first time i did them at ford (paid 300$ for only front). second time i only paid 130$ but not at ford dealer.

Has now 37k and still running great. driven by me (19year old) i really beat this car and it still runs great. i didnt have any problems with it except brakes which i replaced twice.

14" steel wheels(gonna replace any way) tape deck(gonna replace any way) no tachometer(who cares?)

value , this car is about value. 144 ponies with ac , in a 4 door. with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. for the same price as a civic? well i dont know what all the fuss is about with this car. i bought one in 2000 when they were just out, and yeah the recalls are a pain in the ars but , 1st year model, and you don't pay for it, so who cares. that was a zx3, i loved that car , it scooted on the freeway , got good mileage and stereo was good enough to keep. it was even pretty quick off the line at a few red light challenges. the car i just bought is a 2003 lx 4 door. yeah its a base model, but i got the 2.3pzev and ac. for a great price. i love it .

Strength:

Value, efficient shape/use of materials. efficient shape/minimized drag and better milage for volume contained. It would appear that the efficiencies in design and marketing of this car have been passed on to the consumer. Volvo reputation for quality and their hand in design inspires confidence. I hope I am correct on that statement... Haven't heard nearly as much as I would like on Volvo's involvement in design. Very good sound system. Nice forgiving clutch... hope it lasts. I have never lost a clutch in any car. No rattles. Sufficient wiggle room in engine compartment to access for repairs/maint. Ten year, 100,000 mile power train warranty...I take care of cars and ususlly get 1/4 million miles, so the long term warranty is important to me. If the power train fails, it will be a warranty issue. High vis' tail lights. Comfortable driver seat. After mkt adaptability.. When rear brake drums eventually need replc'mt, I hope to replace with discs. Tires, I got Goodyear Eagles on my car..... Never did like Firestone and have seen many bite the dust since 1959 when my fathers Chevy Impala came with a set. Rear window washer. Single resevoir for front & back window washers. Fluid resevoi Secure chip key ignition, like my wife's boss's BMW. Extra foot room under front seats for back passengers. Deep spacious cargo area under back hatch back. Minimal horizontal glass to minimize solar gain even on the hatchback model. Five spoked 15" steel wheels are attractive enough to keep. Neat rear cargo hatch release switch on dash. Five speed manual floor shift while not overpowering demands that you should actually learn to use the gear shift well... kind of like riding a motorcycle. Good long smooth torque range for however much power is actually there... (you can use it). Stylish front top center antenna, might actually be a more effective location. Looks like shocks/struts will be easy to replace when the time comes. No one else in my family drives a std.

Weakness:

During first 1000 miles a little slack has developed on drive train delivery of torque. Engine really needs the 5 speed manual transmition to get needed performance. Rear drum brakes.. of course you can get discs but I was negotiating price, and the rear drum brakes do not cause concern. The "clip" noise/distortion function in my manual for the single disc sound system is not there. Dealer says it was typo???? Back glass collects dirt,.. engineering compromise I suppose. No center console arm rest in my car.. I think I have heard there is an after market product. No secure change tray.. If I use the open space in dash, it slides out on corners. I enjoy cornering sometimes. I am worried that the clear contured covers over headlights will get cloudy/sun damaged with age... Not basis for this yet, I've just seen it on a lot of other cars. I have not had the car very long and would like to rate it again in a year.

I judged this car to be a good value. I always negotiate hard for value, and where else can I get a vehicle credibly rated one of the ten best cars under $66,000 sold in the US for this kind of price. Having been rated this high four years in a row, some very credible people are putting their reputations on the line for this car. Their necks are way out there, and I will be the first to start swinging a blade if they are wrong. Efficiencies in design, mfg, and marketing make for a very competative market price. Very good handling. I also buy for future value.... I think this car is practicle, affordable, and will be loved by the masses. The manual shift model especially interfaces with driver nicely. It seems to develope character in the senses of the driver. That is what keeps the market up on old cars.

It looks good

The Focus was introduced to Australia only this year and I liked the look of it but was worried about changing to Ford after owning Toyotas previously. Have had this car for 2 months and am worried that I have bought a dud. Brakes squeal, ignition takes 1-3 times to start, power is lost when air conditioner is on. I nearly had an accident today when taking a corner as it had no pick up and go. What should I do about this? I should've read this web page before I bought it, I know that much.

I'm small, so the interior is perfect for me and the kids. The exterior design is appealing. Seats are very comfy, and the wagon are is spacious. Steering is nice.

Weakness:

Brakes!! Wiring!!

I had heard great things about the Ford Focus. Even read great reviews. I'd had an Escort for 125,000 miles and it was still going strong when my husband and I opted to replace it with the Focus. We've truly been a Ford family for many years, Ford pick-ups, the Taurus, 2 Mustangs, even Ford farm tractors in our yard! But this experience may be the end of our Ford relationship. I've replaced by brakes at 25,900, my engine light is on, and my rear passenger window decides to open on its own. My brakes are squealing again, and during the hot moist weather my car barely runs. My woes are not nearly as bad as some of the folks who have reviewed the Focus in this site. However, that doesn't mean that I forgive Ford for not acknowledging they have a consumer issue with the Focus. In the next week I'm working for a refund of my brake money or I'm joining the fast growing Class Action Suit in CA. Please, don't buy this car. According to the other reviews listed here, you have a 50/50 chance of getting a bad product. It's not worth the risk.
