Model Reviewed: Ford Contour SE (bought used)

Strength:

Comfortable, fun to drive, decent gas mileage,

Weakness:

V4 is sluggish up hills. Resale value goes out the window after a while.

I had my Contour about 3 months when it was in an accident with a double dump truck and a jersey barrier going near 70 mph. The front of the car was completely smashed in. I came out of it without so much as a scratch on me. Minor whiplash surfaced the next day. The damage was about 11 thou and thus it was laid to rest. If the wreck had been longer than 3 months later than I would have gotten nothing back for it. Sluggish up hill.

Strength:

None.
Well, I like the color. It is a pretty beige.

Weakness:

1.) engine had problems from the factory. It would cause me to stall in the middle of turning. Almost lost my life once. Had to have it fixed 3 times.(warranty covered)
2.) Horrible brakes. Had them redone 3 times.
3.) 3 sets of spark plugs
4.) Mass airflow sensor replaced. spark plug wires replaced.
5.) compartment where passenger airbag is stored is loose.
6.) Oh, tires were replaced also.
7.) 5 different recalls. (Brake wedge, fan blower, headlight wires, under the hood wiring, and another that I cannot recall)
8.) It's a Ford. Need I say more??...
9) Runs horrible. No pick up.
10.) No room for anything in the driver/passenger area. One cup holder that only holds items the size of a can.
11.) Manual door locks lock by themselves.
12.) Window handles roll backwards.
13.) Trunk leaks water in heavy rains.

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!

I am not rough on my cars at all...

Don't know of any at this time.

Weakness:

the entire car. I thought it was American made. Whats up with all these parts coming from overseas?

I am soooo disappointed in this car. I bought it 2 years ago the car was 3 years old and in what I thought to be good condition. It had 35,000 miles on it and ran well. Four months after I bought the car the tentioner went out on it. It has been downhill since. I have no air conditioning, the vents don't work, the transmition (once replaced) is slipping, the gas door wont pop open, the trunk wont pop open, the seatbelt covers come off. I am a single mom and was hoping to have a reliabe vehicle. Unfortunatly the repairs have come to more than the car is worth and I am broke!!

Cavalier, Buick Century, Sunfire, Grand Am....well I haven't known any of my family members to put new transmitions into their cars and they are about the same age of mine.

Very reliable for me , looks good when lowered, not very expensive when bought used.

Weakness:

the 4 cylinders are known to run hot

This has been my first car. It has the 4 banger engine. It had 115,000 miles when i got it , it now has 124,000. Its been a really good first car. Its really good for bass when u take the back seat out of it. Which i do for USAC bass competitons. Ive got 3 JL 12s and a rockford power 500. I hit a 145.8 . I was proud of my contour for keeping all the sound inside. But anyways its a good car.

nice rims...that's all

Weakness:

this car is a piece of cr*p. Cost alot to repair, vibrates nonstop when at stop lights, accelerates slowly, bad shifting(it sounds terrible and is very rough), the dashboard and glovebox rattle even on smooth roads, I always have to have something fixed on it

good on long drives, sporty with the spoiler, comfortable front seats, body looks cool, nice rims, the interior looks cool....and since i was only 17, i didn't know better.....

Strength:

V6 engine has a good pick-up... when it works
tight steering, fun to drive... when it works

Weakness:

This is NOT a dependable car
tons of recalls
bad re-sale value

I'm on my
3rd alternator
3rd battery
2nd pair of engine mounts
and now I have to replace the processor on the car.

My mechanic has recommended me to sell this thing after replacing the processor.

Also the brakes gave out early. Also when it rains, I occasionally lose my power steering. The car is always in the shop and it is only five a half-years old.

DO NOT BUY A CONTOUR... QUALITY IS NOT JOB ONE
I will never buy another Ford.

Model Reviewed: Ford Contour GL (Automatic, V6 DOHC 2.5L)

Strength:

Very few, great engine, good acceleration, awsome handling, comfortable front seats, adjustable steering wheel, and a smooth ride.

Weakness:

It is a FORD, tires wear quickly, ugly rims, difficult to service the engine, tough to remove the oil filter, can't hardly locate the transmission fluid cap, the doors freeze shut but not completely, the gas tank door sticks shut, you cannot put large boxes into the trunk because of the shape of the opening, the carpeting has pulled away from the trim as if it was not made wide enough, there is no interior lighting, there is green light where ever it is possible to put it which is ugly and annoying, the glove box is small, the "cup holders" don't hold cups, there is very little leg room in the back seat, it was nearly impossible to run a 4 awg power wire to the trunk, the speakers distort at high volumes because they are elliptical, the speakers are located in the doors instead of in the dash boards, there is so much wasted space in the trunk if you remove the coverings, the floor of the trunk slides around and is flimsy, the black triangular plastic pieces on the rear doors rattle and are loose, the trim around the doors is tough to remove, all the pieces that hold the trim in place brake and not because I did it wrong, the front seats are difficult to remove, the change cup in the dash can't be removed, the check engine light is always on, the locks don't work even when it is just cold they don't freeze shut with water they just don't function in the cold, the window trim on the outside freezes to the window and pull off when you try to break them from the window, the lights dim when you use the defroster or put the windows up or down, the windows don't go up and down quickly, when you use more than one window at one time they move even slower the more you activate, the rear windows only go down about 6 inches, the output of the alternator is very low may need to be replaced soon, it takes forever for the heater to actually produce heat, there is no function the use the panel and defog, it takes forever to recline the seat because it uses a stupid crank mechanism instead of the lever system like all other cars, the rear doors squeal when you open them and are difficult to close because they need lubrication (no other car I have seen does this), the seat belts don't retract easily, and there is no room under the hood for modifications.

I was happy when I got it but I am now incredibly angry at how terrible and frustrating this car is. It wears out quickly and will cost more to fix it that it is worth. I hate this car and I want to get rid of it. I would not recomend this car to anyone but a junk yard keeper. Most imporantly, it is a FORD, remember that.

Similar to other FORD vehicles in how undesireable they are. Other cars look better and are much easier to work with.

Strength:

Nice car ever seen, very smooth, like a BMW 3 series, not kidding.

Weakness:

2.0L engine with auto-tran sucks, loss power when turn on A/C.
Getting 22mpg with A/C on, my old Escort got 28mpg, half highway half city.

I traded in my super-noisy Escort '99 SE for this '99 Contour SE with 25K miles on it. I actually paid another $2K.
It has only 125hp, not powerful?
No big deal!
Added SuperChips last week, got another 15hp, now definitely better.
Changed Engine oil, Mobil 1 synthetic, car runs much smoother than Accord, Jetta, unfire and Stratus, but still not good as 2000 new model Alero, which is $20K now.
If you love a smooth car, but can't afford $20K, here is the choice, get a 99 Contour for only $12K, don't forget the 2.4L 4Cyl or V6 engine model.

Strength:

Same quite and powerful as Japanese cars, like Toyota Camey and Horda Accord.
Looks much better than all of them.

Weakness:

Somebody says it is American BMW 3, it is not true, only looks like, feels like and rides like.

The gas pump is on the right side of the car, so it is European style, ah? No! (That was my first thought)
Open the door, nice! Step on the gas, firm!! And give a shot, cool!!!
US$17,000 for 170HP 2.5L ZTEC engine with automaitc transmission, ABS, all speed traction control, sunroof, power drive's seat, premium sound w/CD...
Kidding?
Go get this sporty car!
