just the transmisson that ford paid for.

Great Car! I bought it at 17,000 miles and now i have 25,000. I've had only one problem, the trans went at 17,500 but it was under warranty. I trust this car anywhere i go. The 4 cylinders sound great when your acceleratin, not to powerfull off the line but when your on the highway, the zetec engine comes to life when it boosts in the extra horsepower. I've had friends beat me off the line (95 camry)(99 civic), but on the highway the contour is king. It handles good, and the seats are very comfortble. I wish i had the SVT though, its nice. And there is a great groundkid that ford made for this car. I reccomend it.

Cheap interior plastic, & replacing 02 senor

I purchased my Contour in 1999. It was 3 years old when I bought it. I have had no problems with this car. All I replaced when i purchased it was the tires. My car is a 5 speed LX. It had 43,000 miles on it. I now have 99,000 miles on it. The only thing I would suggest is when changing the oil use Quaker State 10/40 weight. Also I had to change the 02 senor because the engine light came on, but my mechanic couldn't find any engine problems. I needed this done in order to get a smog check done. The rules in CA are very scrict. I also owned at one time a 1979 Ford Mustang. It was a nightmare. It was always in the shop. I said I would never buy a Ford again. The Contour changed my mind. I use to rent them in 1995/1996 to go out of town or state on road trips. Being a Mom with 2 children that are very active in school & sports I need a reliable car. I found that in the Ford Contour. My motto; Whatever car you buy, you have to take care of it. Change the oil, have it serviced, change your timing, & change & rotate your tires. I had a 1988 Hyundi Excel for 10 years before this car. For most owners of that car it was a nightmare. I never had any problems with mine. Oh, and by the way, I don't work for Ford Motor Company or anything affilated with Ford.

From the outside, it looks like a decent car.

Extremely unreliable. The only thing that works correctly is the defrost.

Loved the car initially. Then, after about 3 months, things started happening. The car eats batteries. Check engine light constantly on. Coolant light constantly on. Have spent over $1000 on these lights and they are still on! Car cuts off in traffic. It also groans when you push the gas. Power windows have stopped working twice ($270 each time). Cup holders are broken. Car makes a high pitched moan when under 30 mph. Too many recalls. I can never get an appointment to get them done. Also, the air conditioner knob is stuck. In order to blow on high, you have to put the knob on the line next to high. The high line makes it blow low. Go figure!

Love the acceloration when its running right and handles corners like a dream

Let me tell you, I wish I had shown these posts to my Boyfriend before he started bragging about the good name of Ford. I told him I didnt want a Ford but he wouldnt listen. I owned my car for about 10 months before I received a recall noticed for some Fan relay switch. I took it down and dropped it off they called me later that day to tell me my car was ready to go, two weeks later BAM! My engine blew . My Car was fried. Why? Because it overheated, and how did that happen you ask, because Ford lied and never replaced the recall part which in turn prevented my fan from coming on and cooling down the motor. So Ford replaced the Engine but only after a fight and threats to them. Next while they were replacing the motor the techs ruined the high pressure hose on my power stearing so they replaced it, but they put the hose up against the motor so when I was driving it one fine day it melted a whole through the hose and my steering went out. Next, I had to replace the alternator, the water pump, several fuses, dont know whats causing that, My check engine light is on all the time, replace my wiring harness, Oh did I mention that I found a handfull of bolts under my seat when I got the car back from the dealer.....yessssssss. They didnt put the scrape plate back on, the doors stick all the time and sqeal really bad on the back doors. My trunk and gas lid do not open from the lever in the car anymore. I dont have so much as even a speeding ticket so I take care of my car and dont tear it up. The bottom rear motor mount is broken. I think I have pretty much covered everything, Oh no its not...now my car is idling really rough and hesitates really bad when the car is rolling. Now I think thats it but if anything else comes up I will let you know.

Service,many breakdowns

Car has a lot of features for the money. Since the purchase of the vehicle, the following has occured. FUEL PUMP HAS GONE OUT THREE TIMES (ALL THREE STRANDED ME IN BAD AREA OF TOWN AND HAD TO WAIT OVER AN HOUR FOR TOW EACH TIME.) EACH TRIP TO DEALER COST ME 2 OR 3 DAYS OF REPAIR AND THE COST OF A RENTAL CAR. ON THE THIRD FUEL PUMP, MECHANIC FORGOT TO RPLACE FUEL TANK GROMET WHICH CAUSED ALL FUEL TO LEAK OUT ON MY WAY HOME. TO REPLACE GROMET TOOK ANOTHER 2 DAYS AND FORD GAVE ME A LOANER CAR. DASH HAS BEEN RECALLED,AS IT STARTS TO PEEL AND WARP. AC FAN WENT BAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. ORIGINAL FIRESTONE TIRE WENT SLICK IN ONLY 12,000 MILES. DEALER ONLY OFFERED ANOTHER SET WITH A 40% DISCOUNT. THAT SET IS ON THE WAY TO SLICK ALMOST AS FAST. PAINT IS STARTING TO CHIP OFF ROOF OF CAR AND WILL BE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. TRIM AND PANELS ARE NOW STARTING TO HANG OFF CAR. I will not have much more happen because my lease runs out in 4 months. The other problem is that the car has depriciated so fast that it is worth $2,000 less than the price ford offered on contract for lease end purchase. I must further say that you must consider the manufacturer carefully for any car as the service level becomes all important when the car goes bad. Ford has poor service in all dealerships I have gone. The people tend to be rude because they have so many complaints and rude customers. On any morning I have gone, you can not get your car near the dealership with all the cars in the bay. Everyone is angry beacause of poor service and frustration for multible trips for same repair. If you buy a ford you must include a rental car in you buget as all ford I have owned have always broken down may times a year.

This car is a piece of carp!! If u see this never ever buy a ford contour. I'm a teen Driver and we got this car for me because I'm young and its somewhat sport for a family car. about a month after we got it the engine light started to come one. Since we have had it we had to get a ne O2 sencer, water pump, timeing gears, tranny is going out, it stales in cold weather or when i turn the A/C on. Back strut has brokin, 6 new sets of rotors (they just keep on warping), the power stearing pump ling rubs the exhaust and now has a leak. "boy was that one of fords better ideas" The car runs unbelievably hot I mean right on the white live before going into the red zone. Its in the shop right now because when I drive I hit the gas and I don't get any power. When I take off I hit the gas it doesn't go takes a few seconds and then sometimes it starts to go but then stops I have almost been hit several times because off this I Feel very unsafe I pray one right my car will just blow up!!! I have had to replace tones of lights behind the dash, my clock light went out, sound system is going bad, Oh yes can't forget every time I use the horn the fuse blows then i have no horn, flasher. Hmm I'm sure theres more but I'm tired of Typing. Oh yeah if u ask me I recommend Chrysler My mom got a 2000 Cirrus and it runs like a charm no problems. And Dodge

I like my Contour so far. I have a few minor maintanence things to do to it before I can start modding it. It has a nice ride and handles well. It has pretty good get up and go. Check out www.contour.org The Contour is the king of sedans.
