Seemed like a good car but was in the shop 4 times 1st year for exhaust rattling(under warranty)plus other engine light problems. When it hit 82,000 needed new $1500 tranny then the engine light came on. After a few weeks a fuel injector needed replacing $300 for the part(only 1 and it has 4)and it is still in the shop now and they dont know what is wrong with it. We havent abused this car either and the gas mileage is never higher than 30 and more like 20 in the winter. Our plymouth reliant got better gas mileage and was bigger and went close to 200,000 mi before we got rid of it.

Strength:

Impressive gas mileage, pretty roomy for its small outward appearance, and once you get going down the highway, she cooks along nicely. It's perfect for a someone with low income, college students, or Moms and Dads looking for Junior's first car.

Weakness:

There's that heat shield I mentioned which my mechanic says happens quite often on Aspires. Also, in the last year, my Aspire has developed a shimmy in the front end when I get the car above 60mph. I'll have to get that looked at. As far as acceleration when taking off in first gear, the car ought to be called the "Expire." 0-60mph in 20 seconds is pretty pathetic (yes, I actually timed it).

My Aspire has always been a very reliable vehicle in the six years I have owned it. With 84,000 miles on it, it has never once had any trouble starting, no matter how cold out. Except for standard maintenance, the only trouble I have ever had with it was a loose heat shield over the muffler that broke loose and started to rattle. For the money, you can't buy a much better car than the Aspire.

Strength:

The best qualilties are the monstrous amount of room inside, the air conditioner which seems to belong to a much larger car, and the 40+ mpgs.

Weakness:

The transmission flat-out sucks. I'm willing to bet that, with another gear, the gas mileage might improve even more. At 60 miles per hour, the engine sounds something reminiscent of a cat in a blender. One more gear PLEASE!
The engine is so small that the air conditioner noticeably affects the gas mileage.
Instead of making separate parts to replace, Ford had this nifty idea of making conglomerate parts, so when one thing fails, you have to replace fifty, and, believe me, it is expensive!

The Ford Aspire is a great economy car for pretty much anyone. It's cheep, it's somewhat reliable, and you can fit a surprising amount luggage in the back. (I'm a freelance musician, and, believe me, this is the ultimate working drummer's car.) I would recommend this car to anyone who needs something cheep to get around in, and doesn't mind the lack of eye appeal.

Spends a lot less time in the shop than the Plymouth Reliant.
