Strength:

-powerful V6
-roomy
-nice interior

Weakness:

-HEADLIGHTS ARE TERRIBLE!!! YOU CANNOT SEE VERY FAR AHEAD OF YOU WITH THESE CRAPPY LIGHTS.
-the backup light doesn't provide much light at night when backing the car from the garage.
-MPG is bad....the car demands stopping at gas stations frequently.

This car is great! I couldn't have bought a better car than the Dodge Intrepid. My only big complaint is the headlights. They are not bright enough to illuminate the road ahead of you. The backup light is my minor complaint. You can only see whats behind the trunk. The sides are not easily visible at night. I LOVE the V-6! Its very respinsive. I have caught myself speeding when i wasn't pressing the car hard. If you want a great new car, then pick the Dodge Intrepid, but buy a newer model with better headlights and backup lights.

Strength:

Looks nice, drives smooth, roomy, comfortable for long trips.

Weakness:

BAD transmission, BAD air conditioner, BAD water pump.

Bought this car new in 1995 for about $22,000. Thought it was great until the 36,000 mile warranty expired. At 36,500 miles, the transmission totally failed. At 40,000 miles the water pump went out and the Dodge dealer told me that that was normal. The front end started to get loose and rattley. I went through about 8 tires because of problems with the rims. The air conditioning was bad from the start and I was informed that they had extended the warranty to 70,000 miles. I had the air conditioner replaced twice and it still didn't work right. It now will be 5 years old in March, has 105,000 miles and I have one payment left. The transmission has failed AGAIN! Needless to say, I am currently looking for a new vehicle but it won't be any type of Dodge/Chrysler product. I felt that once I drove off the lot with the car, I was no longer of any concern to the dealer. I was treated like a "dumb girl" every time I took it in for a problem. Actually had 2 of the mechanics look right at me and swear that they did not hear the skreeching coming out of the engine when it was cold. Well, after 17 years of driving Dodge/Chrysler products, they have finally lost me as a customer. My sister swears by her Fords and for the first time in my life, I think I'll give them a try. GOODBYE DODGE!!!

Brakes could be improved - a lot

Been driving my ES for two years - last car was a 94 Concorde which I also liked, had more low end power and a bit better gas milage. The Intrepid is a very roomy car, super large trunk, handles like it is on railroad tracks and provide very good transportation. Next I would like a Chrysler 300M....................

Strength:

Roomy interior, solid feel, quiet, 22 mpg city. Good body durability (Plastic fenders don't rust) even in salt environment. Easy to service (oil filter etc) Excellent on trips. Excellent dealer support from Scotia Motors

Weakness:

bad air conditioner (replaced twice ouch!)
Weak transmission, major repair at 75K miles

A nice car to drive and for general ease of service but be sure to get the extended warrantee. If I knew about the A/C and transmission problems that MANY owners experienced, I wouldn't have bought the car.

Strength:

Size, acceleration, great highway car.

Weakness:

Well this car started out ok...almost. The a/c was not working when I bought it but what the hell, we'll fix it if it gets too hot outside right? WRONG! It leaks refrigerant from somewhere ($$ to find/fix). No problem... So the paint on the roof is coming off and the car is looking worse every day and those wonderful color waxes don't really seem to be helping... Oh well it's still an ok car. So the windows won't unfog... now that's a problem (you need to see out of the car while driving). Ok so a friend and myself rip the entire dash apart and fix the little stuck motor that opens the valve for fresh air from the outside to come in. Cost $0.. time 3 hours.. grey hairs: none. Finally one day the radio stopped working (antenna goes up and everything) and it wouldn't even show the time... :( Ok Ok almost done: little problem - the weatherstripping around the doors is coming off (can't really fix it's as if they installed a piece that was too short and so it won't stay in the corner but wants to come off).

FINALLY... Did I mention that during all this the transmission was shifting erratically. (it would go from 3rd to 4th and back over and over when cruising at a certain speed) Figuring this was the nearing of the end of the tranny's life, we sold the car (actually traded in, no one would buy it)

Won't buy chrysler again... It may not have been a huge thing (yet) in my case because I got rid of it before I had to buy a new transmission for it (at 145k kms - 90,000 miles for you folks down south).

Like someone else said: It may be a great car to own when new for a short term or to lease but don't ever buy one!!

Good luck to all you present owners out there... :(

Honda Civic (00) the car we traded in for - excellent so far (27k kms)
Chev Sprint (89) this car must have been 95% suzuki as it was the most reliable thing i have ever owned (5years/100000kms) the only thing that must have come from GM was the front rotors. They warped A LOT! And you can't turn them because they are so skinny to begin with (not vented even), at least they were cheap to replace (but a pain in the a**)

Style, room, and the go when needed.(3.5 engine)

Weakness:

I really can't say there is anything about this car that I don't like. The only major repair in 151,000 miles was the water pump.

When I bought this car it had over 64,000 miles on it, considering I drive over a 112 miles a day this car did excellent! I have had to do alot of brake jobs but that is to be expected when you drive the distance that I do. (Normal maintance) I drive with two kids in the car, one in a baby seat and there is still plenty of room for another person. The sad part is I lost my car to a deer accident and now I am looking at a 1999 ES. I must say I like the ES better than the Basic model it is worth the little extra money. I have heard a lot of horror stories about these cars but I have yet to see the problems listed here. But you can always find a bad apple in any barrell. My sister-in-law had a 94 Intrepid and the car definitly paid for itself by the time she retired it. Over all I would recommend an Intrepid either a base model or the ES but if you were to ask my husband he would say R/T!!

None yet. Runs very good, I take very good care of it. I've heard of the mechanical problems people have had with this car, I hope I'm one of the lucky one's who got a good car.

I haven't had it long enough to tell-- but it works good so far.

Strength:

Interior room, overall style, nice engine power

Weakness:

Build quality is poor.....more squeaks and noises than my 75-year old hardwood floors. Transmission problems at 60k, A/C went out (evaporator coil) which required a month of arguing with Chrysler to repair this item which was known to be defective. Have gone through several batteries (Chrysler says this is due to the Sunshine State....every mechanic says it's due to poor electrical systems). Power rear view mirrors stopped working after 18 months (a big argument ensued and they were finally replaced under warranty). Turn signals stopped working (took 3 weeks to get this replaced). Trim moldings have lost their finish (take a look at any Chrysler vehicle more than a year or two old.....happens on EVERY one of their products). Dealer support is beyond poor. This car has spent far too long in the shop during it's 5 year lifetime.

I don't recommend Chrysler products. We also (stupidly) purchased a Jeep Cherokee which is the epitome of a junk pile.

Strength:

Fantastic car. Quiet, nice looking-interior and exterior, very comfortable, roomy, fast, agile, very reliable, neat little features. Solid car. Also good in snow.

Weakness:

Restricts speeds past 110. Until then, acceleration is fantastic.

I have never had any problems with this car that was not routine fix of owning a car, and definately none of the major problems that others seem to have had. Another friend has a 1997 Intrepid and he hasn't had any problems either. This car was worth every penny, and I don't plan on getting rid of it for a long, long time. It has everything I could want in a car, and is very versatile.
