Strength:
Very comfortable, nicely balanced car with excellent safety features
Weakness:
Not exactly a 'drivers' car that can be thrown around tight corners easily. Not the most exciting car that I've ever owned with cornering & handling dynamics that are a little ordinary. It's now 7 years old and has 162000kms (100000 miles) on the clock and the only repairs and maintenance done on it has been minor and what would be expected as wear and tear for a car of its age.

It's pathetic that a vehicle with such incredible handling, comfort and luxury is such high maintenance.
Weakness:
I CANNOT GET A SAFETY STICKER IN THE STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS...WE DON'T WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED...I THINK THE WHO DAMN CAR OUGHT TO BE REPLACED! My practice is to purchase corporate leased vehicles at two years. I purchased Volvo Certified 2000 S80 T6 at two years because of Volvo safety records - Previous Saab/Mitsubishi owner. In two short years and <15000 miles I've replaced all 4 brake shoes, two rotors, two calipers and both front ball joints for $1800! Usual maintenance very high on this vehicle! Now computer problems...replaced all 4 ox sensors $1400!!! Alternator is bad, battery died, crap mileage. I'm truly sorry Ford purchased Volvo, it's been their downfall. I will NEVER purchase another Volvo. The local dealer is okay, but when the mfr produces a vehicle tied to Ford's planned obsolesence, be prepared to spent all your spare time in the repair shop. Even my mechanic is shocked at the poor quality!!! DO NOT BUY A VOLVO!!! Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi Montero Sport XL SAAB Turbo Audi Quattro |

Strength:
Nice comfortable ride, handling, smooth. Extremely quiet. MPG slightly higher on local (17 MPG by consumer reports, I get about 19-20, makes difference with Premium gas).
Weakness:
The computer's "random" messages," Tire problems, Radio system is too elaborate (I almost hit a car in front of me on the highway because I had to take my eyes off the road to adjust the bass on a radio station), Feels unresponsive on highway. The car is just OK. Bought it in 2003 used at around 50K miles. It was great to drive, exceptional handling, smooth ride, etc. Many really weird problems came afterwards. My front right tire blew out on the highway, which was quite frightening. Dealer took it in, fixed it and apologized profusely plus took off labor costs. Since then, however, my I have had it replaced 2 times because the tire "catches" (more appropriately skids) on dry roads. Second, the computer has a weird problem of messages randomly popping up and disappearing. While this is helpful, it's annoying to know while I'm driving 4 hours that my airbag might have a problem, and when I reach my destination the message just disappears. At 75K my alternator died. Replaced and soon after at around 77500 I took in a new battery. One minor but comical problem that happened: I put a Big Gulp on the cupholder and while going over a bump, the cupholder broke apart (Big Gulp spilling everywhere on the nice leather seats) and was deemed unfixable by the dealership. I didn't even really care but its funny that Volvo designed such an elaborate feature that it couldn't be fixed. Since then, the car has had no more problems (knocks and raps on wood) but the computer problems still appear and with this computer approaching 100K, I'm afraid the electronics will start failing. But nontheless, the car is mediocre. Similar Products Used: Buick LeSabre, Mercedes E320. |

Reliable, Comfortable, Excellent Road Handling, Very Fast, and built like a Tank, and Killer sound system.
Weakness:
Poor rearward visibility, air conditioning seems to take a while to cool on hottest days. Bought the car used in 2002 under Certified Used program with 40,000 miles. I did a lot of research at the time, and felt there could be risk, but the car has simply been the absolute best car I have ever owned and I now have 76,000 miles on it. I have driven it coast to coast in 4 days, and have never been left stranded. It is reliable, powerful, comfortable, and a work of art. I had one rough throttle sensor replaced (under warranty), but it did not leave me stranded. Oil changes, fluids, and tires are all I have invested besides two headlamps, which I changed in 5 minutes. I was rear ended in one fender bender in street traffic, and my Volvo looked scratched, while the other car's front end was totaled. The CD player with the Premium Sound system is the best Audio system I have heard. This is a lot of value for the money, and I would not hesitate to purchase another S80 T-6. Comfortable, looks nice, finish
Weakness:
Abysmal repair record, constant electronic sensor failures, major mechanical/engineering flaws I am frightened by what lies ahead! Now at 70K miles I think I have had every major system collapse on this car short of the transmission and I hate mentioning that. Just as the others note the variety of failures in this car is mind boggling. Front and rear struts penetrations/breakage, broken/worn brushings, broken anti roll bars, cracks in all engine mounts, radiator leak and replacement, sunroof motor and gears stipped out/replaced, replaced throttle sensor, oxygen sensors x 2 for failures, gas gauge and float broke so I ran out of gas on highway while gauge shows 1/4 tank left (Fun!) and so many light bulbs I lost count (@$16.00 a piece). Brake pads 3 times in 70K miles. Punishing! Last repair bill was $3583.00. To date I have spent over $9000 on maintainence and repairs. This figure DOES NOT include several repairs under warranty which were many and the recalls. Averaging about $250/month of ownership in repairs. Have only owned Toyotas and Volvos in past and never had this much trouble with any of those vehicles. Comfortable seats and a nice finish just dont' make up for all the troubles. Bad year, bad model, bad car. Avoid at all costs. I know these comments will hurt the resale value of all s80's not just mine but I gotta be honest here... Similar Products Used: Volvo 850R |

Strength:
Solidity - this car is heavy, solid, dependable, roomy and exceptionally well executed. Surprising mileage for a two-ton saloon - my Avalon has less room, is lighter and yet clocks 23 MPG while the Volvo can clear 28 easily on daily commutes (40 miles, ten in "town" traffic). Couldn't feel safer.
Weakness:
Expensive tires - slightly taller profile might make for a smoother in-town ride. Premium gasoline (yes, I know - suck it up... it's a high-class marque and CVVT sort of requires good fuel). Some adjustment for small side mirrors - not really "blind-spots", but took some getting used to for tight maneuvers. Unbelievable finish for a six year old vehicle. All service which was other than normal replacement was covered by Volvo - transmission replaced OUT OF WARRANTY, but covered "GOOD FAITH" by Volvo - class act (didn't require any effort on our part other than showing all records since delivery - same dealer did all work). Love the room - three kids (two are not at all small - all seem to fit well. We ditched the minivan after making good use of this car for six months and haven't looked back. Silly thing turns 25 MPG on average (better on long trips, more like 22 around town) even when loaded. Normally aspirated version has adequate power for a family of five. Seats are the best since Saab gave up the 900 line... possibly better than those. No real troubles from the vehicle. Not reliable. In the shop too much. I have had a lot of trouble with electonic/computer problems and with dealers inability to diagnose including engine surging, battery problems, antenna rings and immobiliser. These problems began shortly after it went out of warranty which have so far cost more than $2000 and innumeral trips to the dealer.I only drive about 6000 miles per year. Piece of junk Worse car ever owned, and with so many, and repeat, problems I'll never purchase a Volvo again. I've had this 1999 S80 since buying it with 12,000 miles on it. It has two bad rear bearings, has had throttle problems twice ($500 and $1000), leaking heater core, wears out tires (3rd set of Michelins, 65,000 miles on car), emissions system, and numerous other problems you shouldn't have on a $40k car. Piece of junk. And Volvo is jerky--doesn't share codes with non-dealers so stuck with using high-priced dealers. Took car in for service at 55,000 miles (but past warranty by six months), and dealer found $3,500 of problems...on a car that the dealer had serviced since I bought it. So much for customer loyalty. Beautiful interior. Handles well when not in the shop.
Weakness:
Maintaining this car costs $2500 every 6 months for all of the problems it has. This is by far the worst car we have ever owned. I was looking for info b/c I had never heard of the parts they wanted to replace. We've replaced the entire emission system and had numerous computer problems. Between my husband and my families we've owned 5 Volvo's prior to this one. They all made it over 200k w/o problem. This one started having problems before 50k. I wish I had known about this website sooner. Replaced it with a Toyota Highlander 6 months ago and haven't had a visit to the shop yet. A very comfortable ride and a good looking car.
Weakness:
Too much reliance on a weak computer system. Deals do not have to ability to find fundemental problems and make final repairs. While this car is a dream to drive, it just can't seem to stay out of the repair shop. And the same problems happen over and over again. And every problems requires at least two trip before the Volvo guys can find the problem and fix it. 4 trips to the shop to seal a windshield. About 8 to replace failing CD players, I am on player #4 now. And uncounted number of programing error messages. And blown light bulbs!! I have got to be up to 20 replacement bulbs. I lost a key the other day, over $100.00 to replace it and of course the get a replacement I had to take the car in to the dealer. I have put on about 2000 miles on this car just going to the shop. Is the car that bad or does Volvo have the worst trained mechanics in the auto world. My best guess is that Volvo built a car so complex that even their own engineers don't understand it. |
