This is my second convertible. My first was a Z3 BMW.

The SLK is a very nice looking car, but it's built like a Yugo. Do you remember Yugo? The little econobox made in Eastern Europe.

The SLK uses cheap plastic everywhere which leads to annoying squeaks.

The car is made for touring. Do not ask it to negotiate tight, curvy roads. The steering is entirely too ponderous for such an event.

I don't think the power provided by the 2.3 liter supercharged 4 is bad. It's not tremendously quick, but it's ample. The whining noise the engine makes does get a bit long in the tooth, however.

I can not recommend this car.

Strength:

Hardtop - Vario Roof
Interior design and storage space
Ride comfort
Excellent road manners

Weakness:

Demunitive exhaust sound
automatic gear selection could be smoother
more low end torque and acceleration

The Mercedes Benz SLK230 is a fun car to drive. Aside from the usual Mercedes Benz build quality and reliability, value is what counts when resale value continue to hold up very well against all competitors. The biggest selling point is the vario hardtop roof that detach and attach automatically in 25 seconds. The Supercharged Inline 4 has adaquate power and with average mileage between 25 to 28 miles per gallon, it is frugal on premium gas. Despite the short wheel base and sports suspension setup, the SLK still ride like a Mercedes Benz and handles like a true sports car. Whether you want wind in your hair or just a little attention from ladies, the SLK230 is no doubt the best looking roadster on the road today. Mercedes Benz also offer excellent customer service as well as free maintenance for 4 years/40,000 mile.

Honda S2000 - Competes well but the Honda needs to be revved high and no vario hardtop.

Strength:

Very reliable. Only one minor problem in 30000 miles. Large trunk if the roof is closed. Great performance for a 2WD with rear wheel drive on ice, snow and mudd due to the short wheelbase and traction control.
Very good heating system.
Makes lots of fun in summer and winter. Great daily driver.

Weakness:

Almost none. Not much interior space (I am 6'5"). From 100 mph on with the open roof it gets very noisy.

I had this car as a company car in Germany for almost 1.5 years and put about 30000 miles on it during this time under all possible weather and road conditions. Although it was only the 2 liter engine without the compressor (136hp) which has never been sold in the US, this car was lots of fun.
Fast (it gets easily upto 130 mph), fuel efficient and great convertible with the foldable roof.
With the heated seats and the strong heating it makes lots of fun in the winter when driving with the open top. Especailly when it is snowing. I loved it. If you want attraction, wait for the winter, open the roof and drive around in the snow. The people will stare at you...

Strength:

A true Mercedes-Benz classic. Styling, Top, Body Strength. If you get in an accident in this car you will not get hurt badly - its really solid - I think the best of class. Generously sized for a tall driver with long legs. Impeccable drive train built for years of trouble free and satisfying aggressive driving. Looks good anywhere, anytime top up or down.

Weakness:

If you don't really want/need a compact roadster with drop dead gorgeous show car styling I think there are more functional cars for similar money - like the C32 or strech into an M3.

Interior, although gorgeous does not appear to be as well made as other MBZs I have owned. Seats could be more supportive but still improved for the 2001.

Ride gets choppy on freeway "truck induced bumps" at times due to short wheelbase. This car is ignored by jumbo SUV drivers like any other tiny car - this can be less than relaxing for long commutes on crowded multi-lane freeways.

This is a very satisfying car that I use when my larger SUV is not needed for people, stuff or long crowded commutes. Comfortable, powerful enough, great engine sound. I love convertbles but hate a plastic window or cloth top - this car solves that problem and looks great in the process. Have not had any interior problems - I think the charcoal is less problematic than colored interiors that can scratch. Drivetrain on this car is rock solid - quick, smooth and the AT shifts perfectly, quickly and invisibly. Handling and roadholding is superb but the steering feel is not as satisfying as the Porsche - however this car has a better top and will require far fewer trips to the dealer.

I have had no problems whatsoever with this car.

Great daily driver because of MBZ durability - like other roadsters - if you're not on a crowded freeway commute and have lots of opportunities for the joys of open air motoring.

If you don't truly love the styling, the top, and the strength of this car you're missing the point. You need to drive it and compare with other cars you might consider. Its not for everyone but those who like them really do feel strongly about the SLK.

My only regret is that the SLK32 was not available when I bought this car. If you are looking for a perfect - (perhaps more perfect than average new after reading some of these reviews!) - near new 2001 320 - send me an E-mail. I will seriously consider an upgrade to the quicker SLK32 if I can avoid getting nailed with the dealer trade in hit on such a new car.

Similar Products Used:

Boxter - plastic window - cloth top - rumors of engine problems. Z3/M roadster - twitchy tail handling - poor cloth top - less quality. S2000 -buzz, row, buzz, row, buzz, row... - SC430 nice but much more expensive - wasn't available when I bought this car - also kind of funky styling. SL - nice but kind of expensive - don't like the cloth top and the hardtop is simply too inconvenient.

Strength:

The retractable hardtop is fantastic! Looks. It's by far the best looking roadster available IMO.

Weakness:

The Voice Command phone and CD changer option package is too expensive. Get the dealer to drop the price on those!

I love this car! It looks great! It sounds great! It has plenty of power, speed, and quickness to suit me! By far the best combination of style and performance available under about $85K.

Similar Products Used:

It's the only one with a retractable hardtop. Better value than the
Boxster and M3 IMO.
