Strength:

Power, Gas mileage, Ride, Leather and wood grain top quality, Plenty of room, paint, windsheild wipers, AC system, cool dual exuast- GREAT CAR!!

Weakness:

The stereo sucks, should of got the NAK system, Likes to collect tar from the road, even though I get it detailed every week it still seems to collect tar, not very good in the snow, but hey- you wanna go in the snow go buy a SUV. HARD TO FIND WEEKNESSES WITH THIS CAR!

This is a great car since I bought it new. You can't beat Lexus quality! The car has plenty of power to go around thats why I've got about 6 speeding tickets in it before I put a $500.00 radar system in. The car rides so nice you can fall asleep ( be careful its almost happened ) you kind of feel like your in a big moving leather couch. I would buy another one of these or another Lexus (GS300-400, RX300). I would recommend this car to anyone, and if you are looking to buy one BUY IT DAMMIT!!!

Strength:

Fast, quiet, comfortable and smooth riding. Impeccable quality throughout.

Weakness:

I can't find any weaknesses.

This is my 7th Lexus. I started with an LS 400 then an ES 300, another ES300, a SC 300, a '96 GS 300 a '98 GS 300. This one is spectacular. Fast, quiet and smooth. The most comfortable and well apointed cars on the market . Surpasses the S500 Merc in comfort, speed agility and quietness. All with impeccable Lexus quality. In all of the Lexus owned and miles driven the only two things I ever did was change the oil and tires when necessary.

Up until my last GS I had 50,000-65,000 miles per car.

I like lexus soo much I purchased an SC 430 as well.

Weakness:

gas goes quick. I take advantage of the speed and get up.

As soon as I got outta college and got a job, the first thing I did was buy a Lexus LS400. For the 5 years I've wanted a Lexus. I'm only 21 so I really havn't owned a car like this before so Its hard to compare it really. All I can say is IT IS THE BEST RIDE. Its so smooth with alot of get up. I could stand a nickel up on the big block while it ran and when the engine was floored, it stood completly still. This car is love. Its really sharp too. Mines silver with some custom rims on it. I would recommend this car to everyone who demands pure luxury.

Strength:

The engineering and attention to detail in the construction of the vehicles is simply surerb. Fuel economy, quietness, comfort - all first rate and the sound system just adds to it.

Weakness:

Seating could be a little more comfortable and supportive. Bear in mind that a 1992 Lexus LS400 with higher mileage will definitely have minor problems with worn out parts and regular comprehensive servicing is critically important and these costs should be factored in.Expect electronic and/or electrical niggles. It would be unwise we think, to purchase one of these vehicles without a warranty. Get the best you can at the time of purchase, so that you can with some realiability calculate the comprehensive running costs for the expected time you own the vehicle.

The New Zealand used car market is extremely open and competitive, with most of the stock sourced from Asia. This particular vehicle has 175,000 km or 110,000 on the clock and generally speaking runs exceptionally well. The two major reaons for purchasing it were firstly, value for money and secondly, the reputation Lexus has built up. Even at this rather high mileage, the car seems like new and one senses that it should run for many many more kilometres. We expect to get four or five years reliable running with it, and plan at that stage to upgrade to another used Lexus LS400. In our view a properly cared for second hand Lexus is extremely good value for money and probably underpriced.

Similar Products Used:

Other vehicles such as the Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar were not seriously considered, mainly due to the "reliability reputation" built up by Lexus in particular and the Japanese automotive manufacturers generally. This issue becomes increasingly important as vehicles age and build up mileage.

We have a lot of respect for this fine automoblile and thank sincerely the Lexus people for creating it. As the sixteen year old kid next door (who happily cleans it each week) says "Its awesome man!". You cant fool them!

Strength:

Very quiet, smooth, audio not bad

Weakness:

traction control, gas mileage, and it feels like an imitation.

When I first got a Lexus, it was an ES300. I really loved that car. So when I got an LS430, I thought I was really in for a great car. I must say, however, that it is not entirely up to my expectations. The car has a pretty good engine, though BMW's 740 and Jaguar's XJ8 are faster. Inside there is plenty of room, and enough luxury. Sound is O.K. The real plus about this car is the lack of engine noise. This thing is HUSHED. You can only hear it a little tiny bit. The traction control is a joke, and usually turn it off; it hurts more than helps. And I can't help feeling like it's just a knockoff of a BMW or a Mercedes. Still a good car though.

Strength:

The handling and i even want to say the service at Kendall Lexus of Eugene has been great.

Weakness:

The rear seat is not as big as i was expected.....i think because of the back-wheel drive. The trunk doesn't have a lot of space even 97 Camry has more space.

I like the feeling and the way the car has perform so far. I have changed timing belt-water pump and it has run well ever since. I only notice a few minor problem such as blue smoke when start up in the morning(only when the car is cold). That's the common thing for the car that has been driven for over 5 years. The quietness and the handling is great even without the traction-control. I feel that the look is not out of date yet.......it look similar or better than the 92-99 Mercedes Benz S-Class and 89-99 BMW 7-series. Overall it was good value for money and if you have a chance get it. It is very reliable.

Strength:

quiet, good sound system, comfortable and reliable--all the sterling strengths of a Lexus

Weakness:

Bland, soft and boring--all the shortcomings of a Lexus.Despite all the right numbers like horsepower, torque, time from 0-60mile per hr etc, it just does not give you the "whoosh" and spunk of its German competitors. It is like sitting in a cushy sofa on wheels--a sofa that does not move around with much fun. Somehow, Lexus is still incapable of blending delicious sporting performance with pampering luxury.

solid and quiet sedan, still too much a Lexus--i.e. bland, soft, quiet and reliable but without the spunk and performance of the German ubermobiles.

Similar Products Used:

MB S500--currently the best in terms of giving you both luxury and performance--though I hate to admit it. I can perfectly understand why it deserves to cost more and if money is of no concern, it would be my car.
BMW 740 and Audi A8-- expensive and getting dated. I am actually looking forward to the new BMW 745 due out in 2003. It is supposed to be a technological tour de force with an industry first mass produced 6-speed auto and gimmicks galore. In addition, knowing BMW, it will be a fantastic blend of luxury and German performance which no one else seems to be able to duplicate. I am saving up my money to trade into it hopefully in two to three years time. If you are not in a hurry to purchse a car, I suggest you wait for the BMW 745.

Model Reviewed: Mark 4 LS400

Strength:

It is durable and reliable especially with the V8 280bhp engine and 5 speed auto gearbox. The gear change is almost unnoticeable. It has a very large and roomy interior. I get excellent mpg on the road. On the motorways it averages 31-33mpg. Believe it or not, when I drive constantly at 56mph I actually get 36-38mpg! However, in and around town I average 16-18mpg.

Weakness:

There does tend to be a slight pause when the accelerator is pressed in order to move the vehicle from standstill. This is probably due to the fly-by-wire gas pedal (ECT-i Electronically Controlled Throttle - with intelligence). I would like to know if other LS400's with ECTi suffer from this.
I find the Lexus dealers to be very good, although it seems as if they like to keep the service/mechanical details to themselves and not willing to divulge technical information to their customers. For example, recently the hand brake light came on. I thought perhaps the brake pads had worn out or there was a serious fault with the braking system. When I discussed this over the phone, the dealer insisted I bring the car in to see them, instead of informing me of the possible causes over the phone. When I drove 30 miles to the dealer who took the Lexus off me for over an hour, they said it was simply a faulty bulb on the rear brake light cluster! Wow, how simple. The dealer could have asked me to carry out a check of the bulb at home instead!
It has a small rear boot for luggage, but capable of holding most items.

This limosine is fantastic. It's colour is metallic blue with beige coloured leather with superb CD stereo and satellite navigation. The smoothness of the auto is unbelieveable. When the steering wheel is turned the car just glides softly, as if it's floating on air.
After 60,000 miles I am beginning to hear some creaking noise from the front suspension. Perhaps the springs/dampers need lubricating? It's not the front shock absorbers, as when the front is pushed up and down by hand, the oscillations are less than 3.
I do find that other road users will tend to cut me up in traffic, as they know the car cost over £50,000 when new, whereas their bangers are hardly worth the roadtax displayed on their cars. The other strange thing is that Mercedes S, E and C class drivers will very often try to race me at traffic lights or on a long open roads. Why? Don't they know they can't out run a LS400 with 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds with an electronically limited speed of 155mph?

Previously, I had driven a Ford Scorpio 2.9 24V Cosworth in metallic red, but my Lexus surpasses it with reliability and durability. I did sit in the current shape S320, but when I shut the rear doors, the noise emanating from them was as if I had shut the doors to a Ford Escort!

Strength:

I would have to say that the quite interior, the sound system and the smooth engine are the best qualities of this car.

Weakness:

High price repairs are one of this cars weaknesses. At 150k I had to replace the rear main seal and that was $670,a month later the oxegen sensor went out costing me $251, and 3 days after that the battery went out which will set you back about $100 dollars cause its a 27f battery type and they are hard to find. The temp time guage was allready out when I bought the car so that will be another $700 if I decide to get that fixed. Brakes are Toyota Oem and I put them on myself. They are $60. I figure its the price you pay to have a top notch ride.

I love this car it still gets looks. It doesnt matter if its a teen to a 85 year old they always comment on the car or look at it in a different way. The 4.0 liter 32 vavle V8 is superb, and its still ultra quite. My wife drives this car and she raves about it all the time. We got this car when we had our boy and use it as a family car. The back seat AC is great for him. I plan on driving this car for a long time. My wife and I put alot of miles on a car so that why we decided to get a used nice car and drive it forever. Most people who get in the car cant beleive its a 92 model.

I have had a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord EX coupe, and Toyota 4 runner and none of them can compare with this car. The Honda seemed to have the same type of ride but couldnt compare to the overall package of the LS400.
