Strength:
Unbelievable power, smooth, quiet ride, almost supernatural performance.
Weakness:
Can't say anything bad, but probably the repair and maintenance costs will be high. I bought this car because it was a bargain, 27,600 USD for a car that a little over 4 years ago cost 93,000 USD. It had 77k miles on it, but was cosmetically, and apparently mechanically, perfect. One owner, off lease. I thought I was going to resell it -- probably could make 5-10,000 USD profit. WRONG!! navigation system, stereo road manners and driving experience are sublime. car is absolutely beautiful and grows on you more and more as the days pass. bumps come through a little harsh, but with solidity.the v8 burble seeps into the cabin just enough...intoxicating. the stereo soundstage is horribly collapsed to either side of the vehicle. subwoofers are almost useless...become overloaded at moderate volume and lack any tonal quality. road noise is minimal, but not like a lexus LS400. navigation system is CD based...very slow to update and hard to control without having touch screen. BMW needs a lesson from acura in this dept. Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
Best looking car on the road with the 18" M wheels. Can you say V-12!?
Weakness:
None at all Purchased a month ago as a treat to myself and have not been disappointed yet. Customer Service at Bill Jacobs was excellent. Great satisfaction to know that you are driving the most beautiful and expensive car on the road and seeing other drivers jaws drop at the sight of this fantastic bavarian peice of art. Even though i got a used car with some miles on it, it drove like a new car. Handling is as good as it gets, power is better than any luxury car, interior room is literally a limo. the car looks same as a 2001 model.
Weakness:
the controls on the seat is a bit complex. thats about it. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a high performance luxury sedan with heck of of room inside. It's definately a car for people who likes to drive than ride. good reliability, awesome power, fantastic handling. big luxury car that thinks it's a sportscar. ideal car for someone who wants a perfect luxury performance sedan. Similar Products Used: LS400(96)- very smooth car, quieter than the 740iL but bimmer beats it on power and handling. S500(97)- too big and overstuffed looking car, i felt like driving a school bus; looks bigger than the 740iL but smaller inside. |

Strength:
The handling is in a league by itself. The acceleration, and braking are only world-class for a big car. This tank is as nimble as an M3 and has more acceleration than any rational person would need. Scary fast because of the handling, you don't realize you just went around a 90 degree corner at 40+ mph because there wasn't a sound. Also, it's my personal opinion that the 17" wheels that come with the run flats are the best looking wheel on a luxury sedan ever, any make.
Weakness:
Front seats need more support, long trips don't go well. I chose the run flat tires with 17" wheels. The ride is fairly punishing on rough surfaces. The 98 740iL I traded in had regular tires and rode much better. It's pricey up front, but like the best of anything, you'll never be able to go back. It's on par with all the best in areas of luxury, saftey, gizmos, and prestige, but alone in performance. It's by far the classiest for reasons similar to it's performance: It doesn't shout out to everyone on the road like the MB or Jag, but there is something undefinable about the understated elegance and subtle look of the car that separates it from the pack. When you add the shocking performance for a big car, it stands alone. BMW is really going to have to mess up big-time for me to drive anything else ever again. Similar Products Used: LS400- came the closest, but way too bland S430- too much "old man trying to make a statement" look about it, plus the 7 ran circles around it (handling, handling, handling) XJ8- nope, not in the same universe |

Strength:
This car has a sublime V-8, telepathic steering, incredible suspension, and in short, the best driving experience available in a full size luxury car. In addition, it has enough luxury goodies to satisfy any reasonable human being. The stereo is awesome, the nav system is relatively easy to use and very accurate, the integrated Startec phone is excellent, and the general ergonomics are what you would expect from a driver-oriented vehicle.
Weakness:
Hard to find a serious fault, but I would change the following: Keep the trunk-mounted CD changer, but add a single CD slot on the dash. I like the "CD library" in the trunk but would like the ability to play a single CD on impulse. The Nav system is CD based, and should be DVD, thereby eliminating the need for multiple discs. Lousy cupholders (how does the builder of arguably the world's best cars built such terrible cupholders?) That's about it. As stated, looked at the GS430 and the BMW 540, but needed a little more back seat room. Could not warm up to the new LS430. It's a great car, but clearly slanted more to the luxury side. The A-8 had the allure of all-wheel drive (a plus in Wisconsin), but Audi's still struggle with some quality issues. I picked the BMW 740i Sport because I felt it was the best combination of luxury and sport. It drove as well as the smaller 540, but gave me the extra room. The 18 inch wheels that come with the sport package give it an aggressive look and really enhance the handling. I like a stiff ride, but I would suggest you test drive one with the larger tires and stiffer suspension before you buy. You do trade off a bit of ride comfort, but I find it a worthwhile compromise. We are having a really snowy winter here, and those big performance tires are not the greatest in the snow. However, the stability and traction control, along with the flexibility of the Steptronic transmission have kept me from getting stuck so far. I should probably change to snow tires, but I love the look of the regular tires. Can't imagine why anyone needs the limo-like room of the 740il. All in all, I am thrilled with my decision, and really look forward to my commute each day. I'll try and give an updated report after I put on more miles. The other cars I drove were all fine cars, but it's really hard to beat BMW if you enjoy the driving experience along with your luxury. Quite possibly the best luxury-sport sedan available today! Strength:
Good power and hadling for such a heavy car.
Weakness:
The car's finish seemed lackluster and could use some retouching. I got this car for free from my uncle Flip. It was his wife's car and has no reason to keep it, because he can't drive. It's a pretty good car. I thought that the finish was a bit messed up. This was easily fixed, though after I sanded it down and got some new paint for it. I used some leftover flat black exterior paint I had used on my house. I used a roller and a paint brush to do the job. Make sure you tape off the windows, because mine are know painted shut, but with such an advanced vent and AC system,it's okay. There is plenty of room in the car, which is great because I'm a pet groomer and sometimes I have to carry up to ten or twenty cats and dogs in my car. This car is well put together and I'm sure it will last me for a long time. I recommed this car to anyone who can afford it. Comfort, seating, luxury, handling. Very fast for a big car. Wife also love this car. Large rear door opening that makes it easy to position children in child seats in rear.
Weakness:
Other than the fact it makes me keep driving and racking up a lot of mileage, there are no weaknesses. Been driving BMW's for more than 10 years. Considered MB (too old for 30 somethings) , Lexus (kind of bland), but always come back to BMW. Similar Products Used: why bother with other brands? |
