Audi A4 (2010 and older) Luxury

DESCRIPTION

The Audi A4 has a planted, sportier stance and holds the road with a new sense of confidence and enthusiasm. Its new underpinnings are shared with the S5 and A5 coupes. Thanks to the liberal use of ultra-high-strength steel, the body weighs 10 percent less than last year's, yet is more rigid.

The 2.0 T is equipped with a new 2.0-liter, I4, 211-horsepower, turbo engine that achieves 21-mpg in the city and 27-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 23-mpg. A 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard. The 3.2 quattro with Tiptronic is equipped with a new 3.2-liter, V6, 265-horsepower engine that achieves 17-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway for a combined fuel economy of 20-mpg. A 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

Strength:

Comfortable, pretty good handling, decent power, good brake, dash layout, climate control, full size alloy spare tire, high quality material inside and out, AWD, build quality.

Weakness:

Turbo lag, not fast enough(a GIAC or APR chip would be a nice upgrade), no power seat, poor gas mileage for an engine with only 150hp(around 21mpg-24mpg for regular use), some rattle.

Bought it used at 27k miles. Nice car....so far, but Wish I got the manual trans.

Strength:

Comfort- can't beat it! Handling is perfect. Any more power and I would be in trouble.

Weakness:

LOW clearance, but that can also be a good thing. I hate idling down the turbo after running it hard, but the service people said it would prolong the life of the turbo alot

I have not had my car long, so I can't give any opinion on reliability, but so far I love it. It handles like a dream, is FAST, and definantly the most comfortable car I've ever been in. My back has always ached after long road trips in the past, but after a 600 mile trip in my Audi I felt great. I have the 3.0 with the sports and convienance packages. It also has the 6 speed manual. I test drove the multitronic automatic and didnt like it nearly as much as the manual.

Strength:

First three years car was nice.

Weakness:

Check engine light comes on at least once a month (major annoyance), CV boot cracked twice, breaks wear quickly (not due to my driving either, my other cars didn't have this problem), cruise control has had problems since second year of ownership.

This car was great for the first three years. Hardly a problem, but after the 3 year or 45,000 miles warantee/service deal ran out it has been a nightmare of a car. Before my Audi, I owned a Honda Accord (never a problem in 250,000 miles) and a Pontiac Fiero GT (only two problems in 165,000 miles). Both of these vehicles were much less troublesome than the piece of junk that sits in my driveway today.

Strength:

Built Quality: Nicely built interior, didn't even hear a single squeak in three years of driving the vehicle. AWD: The quattro is amazing, it can handle any kind of weather condition. I always feel that I am in total control.

Weakness:

Small rear seat space.

I bought a brand new Audi 2.8Q with xenon lights, sports package and convenient package back in the summer of 2000. The car is just amazing. Adequate power (incredible low end torque), perfect interior, superb built quality, and of course the quattro system which I think is the greatest all wheel drive system in the world. I wouldn't want anything besides an Audi in the future!!

Model Reviewed: , Audi A4 1.8T Quattro

Strength:

The Quattro system will amaze you. I live in Alberta Canada. We get a lot of snow and travel through some challenging roads (Canadian Rockies). This car drive like if it was on rails. The handling and control through turn and acceleration in not comparable to any car without an all wheel drive system. I got 16" winter wheel for better traction and would recommend it for anyone driving in snow condition. The car is very comfortable and driving position is near ideal. I got the A4 with the sport package. This makes the car very agile and quirky in turn and your compromise will be a rougher ride (well worth the penalty in comfort). Radio controls are easy and the sound system is much better than my previous Saab which was damn good! Now that I have the 6 CD in dash, I will never again buy the trunk mount charger. My only wish is that it could also read MP3's. Service so far has been really good.

Weakness:

The turbo does lag on initial acceleration. Once going, the car drives like a charm. I which it had an extra 30 HP under the hood. I guess I might just have to buy the chip one day. The cruise control location could be better. I like when it’s on the steering wheel but with the sport package, it comes on the side. For those of you who have little infant or child seat, this will be a very tight fit. I can barely fit mine in behind the driver seat, even when pushed all the way to the front (but I guess I don’t really need the kid in the car when I want to test the performance of the car). Again for those with kids, the trunk opening is small for a stroller. These are very minor points since the car was not really meant for that. I still bought the car because the looks and performance were well worth it.

I bought my 2003 A4 from a dealership in Regina, SK. These guys gave me 4 percent of MSRP. I ordered the car and got it 5 months later. The 850 km drive was worth the saving and service. Audi treated us with professionalism and class. The local dealership would not even offer 2 percent off. I ordered a Silver A4 Quattro 1.8T with the sport package. I also ordered an extra 16" mags for the winter with the proper tires. The whole thing came up to 43000$. Well worth it. I got the car in Nov 2002 and drove it home. I love this car and every time I see another one on the road. When I wanted to purchase the car, I compared it to BMW 325, Volvo S60, VW Passat 1.8T, and Saab 9-3. I was treated nicely at every location except BMW. I thought these people were full of themself. I got in to these dealership and told them which cars I was comparing. The only dealership that needed to put down other vehicles was BMW. Don’t get me wrong, I like bimmers, but the money is not worth the attitude I got. You’ll pay extra for cruise control, rear folding seats, huge $$$ for a sport package. As far as driving goes. If you want a very soft ride, get the Saab or Volvo. These two were very comfortable but no where near the status of sport sedan. They have little sport performance to them. The Passat was to much for me (I just turn father and this had space for 3 more kids!!!). When come to looks, the A4 with the sport package is just drop dead gorgeous. All maintenance is included (mind you that’s also every 15 000 km). The performance in winter condition no where comparable to the rest of the pack.

Weakness:

Coil Pack, Coil Pack, Coil Pack I have 30,000 miles and the car has been flat bed towed three times. Audi Customer Service is useless

My romance with a German car has come to a nasty end. When it runs, its beautiful. Problem is, there's always a problem and I have lost confidence in the reliability. The last time the car died on the Highway Audi 24-Hour Roadside service refused to tow me: I had to call 911!!!! Sorry can't recommend the car despite its beauty

Weakness:

I want an A4 1.8TDI, and wish this were imported instead of the Jetta- I would buy this car in a heartbeat Space, but you know that when you get it Bearings and brakes need replacement more than one would expect

Quick and nimble, this is the one car I have ever had that hasn't lulled me to sleep. It has been put through its paces, driven in freezing rain, snow, torrential downpours, and every kind of traffic. Had to make panic stops to avoid deer, and accidents. In every situation it has behaved impeccably. Hydroplaning is not a problem because the drive system keeps the nose pointed straight. Studded Nokian tires make this car able to handle any winter condition with aplomb. With two adults, one child, two dogs, and a roof box, have averaged 24.8 mpg. Not bad. The 1.8T motor pulls to the redline without a hitch, reaching the speed limit almost in second gear, which makes launching from an on-ramp less problematic. Terrific ride.

Strength:

Safety Interior finish Not an everyday seen driver Comfortable cruising Terrific mid range passing speed 40 to 60 mph Interstate cruising at speed - solid Audi maitenance free warranty period

Weakness:

Deperciation is rapid Electrical gremlins Squaking lower arm bushings Some wind noise at speed noticed at door/ window interface Unexpected oil leakage from seals developing after warranty expired High priced dealer service costs that don't make sense as the VW service cost are a few dollars less at the same dealer. My dealer was fairly good until their building was destroyed and now haven't rebuilt. Now stuck going to overpriced dealer in high rent district.

2.8 triptonic with sport suspension. Waited 6 month for car to be built to spec. First impression is a solid constructed car compared to japanese cars that I've owned. However at 84,000 miles the some annoyances are now appearing. The fan motor has a irritable dry bearing whine at low speed, the cruise control is intermitant after the dealer checked it and found no faults. The best feature is that for the first 3 years or 50,000 miles all maintenace was on Audi, however, I addede additional oil changes in between their suggested intervals as I had severe conditions which Audi doesn't recognize. The Dealer was helpful at times assisting in suspect defects and must have "cost" Audi as the front suspension bushings and arms were replaced as well as the water pump and the climate control head unit. Overall the A-4 handled well and the quattro system is very reassuring in wet and snowy conditions especially outfitted with proper winter tires. Being the 5th year of service finds that there is a definite squeak out of the front steering rack or column along with some other issues. The cost of the car pretty well accounts for the less than stellar build quality...makes sense that a VW Passet an essentially same car can be had for about 3 thousand less. The interior quality beats anything at this price point. The gas mileage really suffers at around town driving, but, on the interstate long distances at 75 mph renders 25-27 mpg, which is good considering its mass and automatic transmission. It can use premium or regular fuel at really little difference in performance. I caculated that additional ccost of premium really doesn't get better mileage and I doubt it makes it any faster. The rear seat are cramped for adults but the split fold rear seats are handy. The A4 has more features than a BMW 3 series as it comes with AWD for the same price as a BMW, I gues its a matter of where and what conditions you drive in. As I drive to snowy areas the AWD function is important to me. The qustion is if another Audi product is worth it? Probally will lease as that puts the service and maintenace issue back onto Audi and not from my wallet.

Strength:

Curb Appeal - Sport Package with 17" Wheels Fit and finish, especially the interior All Wheel Drive (Quattro) Fun factor It's nice not too see another car just like yours at every stoplight.

Weakness:

Could use more horsepower, but not awful. Can't stand the noise of the open moon roof unless a window is open as well. Six cylinder version too costly compared to competition.

I chose this car based on price, features and past experience with BMW. It felt like most of the miles on our BMW 323 were from going back and fourth to the dealer for service. All 4 power windows stopped working in succession. Replaced 3 thermostats. Air conditioning would only work when accelerating. These are only a few among many other issues. It's not a good thing when the dealer's service department knows you by your first name and welcomes you with "It's nice to see you again." We have never had a single mechanical issues with either of our Mercedes. So far the Audi has been very acceptable. In the first week of ownership the heater core was replaced due to a hole that was either there when it was manufactured or developed right away. No other mechanical issues to speak of. Driving the Audi has been a joy, although acceleration is a little more hesitant than I expected. I guess this is just something you have to accept in a turbocharged engine. Engine is a little rough at idle until it warms, but not anything I would consider an issue. Different driving experience than the BMW. I think the Audi is a firmer ride than the BMW, so long trips are not quite as comfortable. Both corner remarkably well. I enjoy the firmness of the ride, but my wife finds it irritating, she much perfers the plush ride of her Mercedes. Very happy with the build quality of the Audi's interior. Everything fits together flawlessly. Seating if very comfortable, but perhaps a little narrow for some. I find the interior holds my interest better than the BMW or Mercedes. The Mercedes definately out does both BMW and Audi on quality of materials. I believe the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi all offer a great product with strong positive points. For the money I feel the Audi is tough to beat. It really depends on what you are looking for. If you look at the BMW without giving Audi a chance you are making a big mistake. If you're looking primarily for luxury and are not so interested in cornering ability, I would recommend the Mercedes every time.
