BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

BMW Z3 M Roadster (1998 - 2002) Convertibles

DESCRIPTION

(1998 - 2002) The Z3 was the first BMW roadster to be sold in America since the legendary 507 was discontinued in 1959. While the Z3's retro styling has the feel of classic roadsters, the car is thoroughly modern, foregoing no creature comfort or ergonomic consideration. In 1998, BMW's M motorsports division added the Z3 to its collection of high-performance M models with the addition of the M Roadster. Equipped with a tuned down version of the engine found in the powerful new M3 and styling befitting of an M car, the lightweight M Roadster reaches 60 mph in just five seconds.

Strength:

Sweet motor, handling, brakes, open top!

Weakness:

can't fit 2 golf bags in trunk

This is what two-seaters should be. Forget the underpowered Boxster and buy the M Roadster. It's faster than a car should be and it looks sweet!

H-K Cd player & sound system SUCKS, no room for anything, bad quality control at factory, wiper blade was not on right ,marked windshield when first used, they never plugged in rear amp,had to watch(and sweat)as dealer ripped apart car only to find 2 hours later it was not plugged in.No spare! But mostly for over 40,000 big ones could they at least give me a good sound system.Dont get me wrong,it is all you could want in power ,handling and looks bar non.

The M is no good for an every day car,you must have other auto's You can't shop, or at least you can't buy anything no room. It's a mid-life crisis sort of pick me up,women can't resist it. It's a high price man's toy......

Strength:

Low-end torque. Styling. Power. Easy pop-top. Can't imagine having more horses.

Weakness:

No steering wheel adjustment [unless you are a freaking midget, the wheel blocks the view of the guages]. Cup holder is awkward. Seat does not tilt back far enough.

I love this little rocket...these MOTORSPORT boys know how to build a very fine street-legal fun machine. Excellent torque and very responsive power and steering. It sounds like music, shifts like silk. Styling is exceptional, definately a head-turner. Makes women blush.

Similar Products Used:

Porsche C4S; Mitsu 3000GTvr4; NSXT; Boxster; HondaS2000. The roadster is considereably more responsive and less expensive than all of the above which I have owned or road tested.

Model Reviewed: M roadster Supercharged Dinan 2 suspension

Strength:

FUN, makes me SMILE (silly grin) whenever I drive it, Torque, engine easily takes a supercharger, looks, prestige, side airbags, beautiful two toned leather interior, it's a convertable rocket almost as good a drive as the M Coupe, no leaks, huge disk brakes, great stock exhaust and wheels, DSC off switch, Dealer support warrantee and roadside assistance, www.bimmer.org/z3/messages/

Weakness:

Now has to compete with the 3.0 engine and the 2001 M engine. Susension is acceptable but should be first mod, boot cover is a PITA so go naked, too many people give you looks, occasional rattle fixed under warrantee, my wife gets too much attention from other guys when driving it, my wife wants to drive it :-o

AWESOME. This is THE car combining fun and freedom of top down motoring with jaw dropping performance, not to forget prestige to boot. Only one car in this price range compares: The M Coupe. With the supercharger and Suspension mods, these cars are still less than $50,000. Neither the S2000 nor the Porsche Boxster Sport can touch it. Don't fool yourself, the S2000 sells for thousands over MSRP, and when you don't see one on a flatbed, you gotta ask "where's the torque?" The porsche, well, check out the BASE price. If you don't get a M roadster, buy a Miata...that is the funnest roadster for the least money:-)

Similar Products Used:

Mcoupe - Just not convertable. But stiffer and overall better handling.
Porsche Boxster- Are you kidding? Check the $, then the numbers.
Porsche Boxter S - Ahhh, competition. The M better in the straights, and I believe still faster. Porsche in the twisties. But consider this, with the above mods (Suspension and SC), the M is 0-60 in 4.8 or better and planted on the road. The Boxter S can't touch it, especially for under 50,000. Check the boxsters base price, and then with the options you want. How much do you think an oil change is?
Honda S2000 - Alot of car for the money. Will they ever sell at or below MSRP? Personally, I prefer the low end Torque of the M to the revs of the S2000, and of course the looks and prestige of the M too. I wonder if you could find a low mileage S2000 for a reasonable $, that might be a deal. Have heard about reliability issues, though unsubstantiated.

Strength:

Excellent bang for the buck. At 47k and change it's an excellent value. Just look at the stats. It can hold it's own with cars that are twice its value. Still maintains the same simple and utilitarian, but stylish M interior. I love the light up shift knob. The exterior styling is fantastic too. It's got an aggressive low slung front spoiler and four ground-pounding stainless steel tail-piles in the rear. The side grill "gills" are a tribute to the 507. The new version also has a lined top which is great for winters and standard on all new BMW Z3's and M's. Great security system. Some kids tried to cut through the top, and break the windows. No dice. I caught them red-handed and I believe that the inherent toughness of the car delayed their entry and allowed me to apprehend them.
I love the fact that those idiots in the lowered Honda's and Acura's cringe when I come up next to them at a stoplight. It takes a fine German racer to make these fools realize that their hamster-powered sub 2.0L engines are never going to cut it

Weakness:

It needs a 6th gear, but who's counting. A very important tidbit about the rims is that BMW will not release the unique silver paint to body shops, so if you smack a rim up, you have to buy a new one, or have the outer edges of all four wheels polished down (which is what I did...looks great). The DSC tends to kick in a bit too frequently and I find that the long hood and cockpit position tend to necessitate corrections when cornering. It's got a pretty good stock Harmon/Kardon sound system, which does the job, but some may find it inadequate at cruising speeds.

The second that I heard rumors about BMW shoehorning the 315hp powerplant into the same body, I knew I had to have it. I put a deposit down almost a year in advance and took delivery of the car on June 2nd, 2001.
Making the transition from the 2.8L Z3 was quite a shock, especially with the tighter suspension, additional power, and other subtleties that make an M car so unique. This car is fast. Really fast. Scary fast. Road and Track posted a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds, which I have never even attempted. I'm still trying to get used to the 8500 redline and "living large" on the tachometer. It still retains the low slung rear quarter panels of the original Z3 body, versus the flared humps on the post-2000 Z3 models, which I don't care for.

Strength:

Power, design, materials/craftsmanship, beauty.

Weakness:

Too much power for some, and obviously not a family car. My only, and I mean nitpickingly minuscule, gripe so far is a slight exhaust rattle when the engine is cold. When the pipes heat up (10 minutes or so) its gone.

This is the first time that my experience with a product has truly exceeded my expectation. Picked it up on Monday (07/30), which is steel-gray, imola red leather, black top. Everything is tight, made of the best materials, and aesthetically pleasing. The car is so grossly OVERPOWERED. Think Shelby Cobra, but with BMW's M suspension, and digital stability control. I drove the 2000 M roadster, and there is little comparison in performance. The handling is truly rail-like, and the acceleration (even in the lower revs) is staggering. Exhaust notes begin like a big-block V8 and wind into the shrieks of an Indy car . The 2001, with an extra 75 horses, extended redline, and upgraded suspension/DTS, is a totally different car.
I haven’t gotten a chance to wind it out beyond 5500rpms due to the break-in restrictions, but 1200 miles is rapidly approaching and I'm heading to Montana to put my new toy to some tests.

Twice the car of previous M-roadster models. Finally BMW puts European performance in the US market. Wow....
