Model Reviewed: M-Coupe

Strength:

Unique looks. Acceleration. Flawless five speed transmission. Cornering.

Weakness:

Almost nothing to complain about. The gas gauge goes wacko for the first few miles after a fill-up. The car had a wierd rattle shortly after purchase. A friendly mechanic from Niello BMW rode with me and finally diagnosed a loose parking break cable. No other problems in about 24k miles.

The M-Coupe is an awesome performance automobile and also a great daily driver. It puts a grin on your face every time you take a drive. The car corners like it is on rails and working the transmission is pure pleasure. Thought it would be too "hard" on the freeway, but it is just fine. The hatchback is the only practical aspect of the car and it is very convenient, making the car a great weekend touring car for a couple.
This is a wonderful mid-life crises car. Should not be driven by an unsupervised teenager! The fit and finish is very nice. When you think about the other truly unique performance automobiles on the market, this car is a tremendous bargain.

Strength:

everything but audio

Weakness:

Z3 "audio system" == consumer fraud

I hope BMW has yet another stunning year with Z3s however their entire audio marketing and/or engineering team should be forced to listen to their monster, then fired. I am mailing my recently removed infected BMW audio parts to BMW-USA, postage due, as a reinforcement.

1. Negotiate your Z3 deal stripped of as much audio as possible. Especially the HarmonKardon. Do not spend $$ on upgrade(s). You cannot "upgrade" a 10.0% THD sysem with a CD changer.
2. Take the $1500US you just saved to your nearest professional car audio specialist.
3. Listen to your new system, then a friend's Z3 that has the original audio. Relax. Chuckle. Notice a grin forming.
4. Console your friend.
5. Mail your old crap parts to BMW-USA, postage due.
6. Send me a thank you email for saving your sanity.

Strength:

time-honored engine, acceleration, style, build-quality, easy to drop the top

Weakness:

trunk space, stock radio, plastic rear window, does it really need 8 bmw badges on the car? we know it's a bimmer.

Fun to drive! The old 4-cylinder 1.8 models should be canned. 6-cylinder is the only way to go.

Model Reviewed: 2.3

Strength:

Very quick and nimble car. Handling is superb comparable to others in it's class. Acceleration is pretty good, nothing breathtaking. Thinking about putting the Dinan exhaust and software chip to give me that extra 18 horses. Fun car to drive, everyday is just a joy to get in the car. BMW service is excellent. Gonna go for the m-roadster next year. Price comparable to other sports cars is great. Great value

Weakness:

Not much to say, the plastic window suck. Stereo isn't that bad, never really pay attention while i'm driving anyway. Just too much fun in the drive itself

All in all the 2.3 is a fun car to drive. Quick car that had pretty good handling. Have not driven the 2.8 or 3.0, but the M-roadster is the only one you should consider. If your looking for a daily or weekend driver then the 2.3 is the way to go. For those that want pure performance out of a Z-3 then you gotta go with the M. BMW never dissappoints, they always build a great vehicle. Do yourself a favor and go test drive one.

91 corvette, as far as power the Z-3 just doesn't compare. Handling goes to the corvette also. Z-3 is better on gas, and just alot more fun to drive though.
M-roadster, if you have the money just get the damn thing. Pure is all I can say about this car. Hands down one of the best sports cars I have had the pleasure of driving.

Strength:

The engine is superb. It's a real sports car. Very good feeling of the road.

Weakness:

Manufacturing Quality is not up to the usual standard of BMW.

I bought the car about half a year ago. Untill then I used cars only to get from A to B. With this car you not only get where you want but you also get an awful lot of fun while driving.

If you are driving on snow or ice you should be carefull for it takes some skills to get the 190 hp on the road. I really recomment the DSP (dynamic stability program).

It is fun driving!

Model Reviewed: Z3 3.0

Strength:

Engine, handling, quality

Weakness:

Bulky rear-view mirror

Incredible car! Well worth the extra $4K over the 2.5 version.

ENGINE: I find myself turning the stereo off to listen to the melody of the engine. I'm still short-shifting and accelerating rather slowly during the break-in period, but all it takes is a slight move with my right foot to remind me that it has tons of power to spare.

STEERING: Very precise, incredible feel of the road. I'm glad that the extra assistance they added to the 2001 330 model due to (lame) customer complains missed the Z3. Does not drive like a convertible at all, the chasis is stiffer than some other non-convertible sports cars.

QUALITY: I'm very pleased with the overall quality of this car. I have no complains whatsoever.

Similar Products Used:

The only cars of its class that are comparable are the M Roadster, M coupe and the excellent Honda S2000. While the M Roadster and especially the M coupe have better handling, I could not afford them. If you have the money, go for a M Roadster, you can't go wrong with a Z3 body, sportier suspension and 315 hp engine. Honda S2000 is an excellent car too, however the Z3 has better looks, and I prefer the Z3's classic interior over the hi-tech Honda S2000 look. Plus, I have mixed feelings about the 4-cyl 8000 RPM engine.
