from a Summary: if ur serious about ur car system forget i have a general rule that u should forget about japanese speakers and this is definitlely the case with the alpine s12. i ran two of them off a soundstream reference class 5 amp [which is a seriously mad amp] and the subs sucked serious arse. the bass is hollow and muddy [rather than sounding 'bup bup' it sounds 'booowwww ooowwww']and hence sounds terrible on any sort of music that has fairly active base lines - ie r n b, soul, whatever. furthermore, u cant really crank these too loud either cos they distort terribly. i replaced these pieces of junk with a couple of orion amps which are run at 2 ohm rather than 4 ohm like the s12 and the improvement is incredible.
just a quick note, im still of the opinion that alpine make some of the best head units going round. im currently using the CDM 7861R and im very satisfied Strengths: value for money [i paid 160 australian dollars], look pretty cool, a good first sub considering the price, but if u get a sub, ur serious about sound, so fork out a bit extra and get something decent [focal, mb quart, boston acoustics]. Weaknesses: sound crap and distort at what i would call short of loud. Similar Products Used: orion, focal utopia [the best sub i have ever heard], mtx, pioneer, sony [these last two subs are an insult to the industry]
