Strength:

6.5v pre amp outputs, very useful when you want a clean signal

Weakness:

NONE

I have owned this head unit since 2000 and now its 2014, have done multiple competitions with this cd player placing first in every one, and till this day I haven't found a new gen cd that will put this pioneer cd player to shame, yeah it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the new gen cd players but the qualities is their unlike new cd players. For this cd player to last 14 years and go thru multiple cars and multiple audio competitions it show old school is the way to go..............

Strength:

Despite intimidating interface and selection of features, it's remarkably easy to learn and use. Exciting display presents loads of information at once with a somewhat customizable layout. Sounds great connected through a PPI 240W amp to 4 Boston Pro Series 6" speakers and JL Audio 10" Sub. Too many features to list. Configuring the sound for the listening environment is effective and relatively easy.

Weakness:

Pioneer claims the the display is easily readable in daylight, but quite the contrary. The illumination may be bright enough, but when sunlight reflects of the smooth glassy surface, it drowns out the display, making bright-light reading impossible. Also, the screen colors invert every few seconds (probably to prevent screenburn), but it's annoying as hell watching the screen look like a photo negative half the time. Some of the buttons are too small to press easily/accurately while driving.

Overall a very good system, and certainly gets the attention of passengers with its animated displays. The features and configuration capabilities set it apart from the competition. For instance, it comes with a microphone which you place in the primary listening position, then it runs a test pattern and adjusts the output levels appropriately. Also, the DSP allows for various listening modes, though most sound worse than bypassing it altogether. Internal EQ is a nice feature - you can set and save sound levels for different types of music (i.e. heavier bass when needed). Great buy for an audio nut, a bad buy for someone who wants a simple push-on, push-off system. MSRP is $749, paid $600 on sale.

Similar Products Used:

Similar Alpine and Clarion set-ups. All high-end systems tend to sound the same if connected to good peripherals. It's the features which make the difference at this level. So don't waste money on this head unit if you're not going to upgrade your speakers and amp.

awesome tuner, cd, user friendly

Weakness:

wasnt exactly thrilled with the shape of the remote at first, all set now though

I have absolutely no complaints with this deck, hasnt skipped once ( and my truck doesnt exactly ride like a cadillac), tuner is great, organic display is sweet, and its easy to get used to the functions, and find them at will....also, paid 450 for mine, which is a plus...

Strength:

13 Band EQ, Nice display, Excellent Remote range, Fantastic CD SQ, CD's dont skip, 6.5V amp hookups, Speaker location adjustment, DSP...and on and on and on.

Weakness:

Poor stereo reception, CD's get hot after extended play causing the CD portion of the unit to shut down until the unit reaches a cooler level. Reception doesnt really matter all that much as I listen to the radio very little.

High quality sound, good ergonomics, good remote, great display, fabulous CD sound quality, doesnt skip, great 13 band EQ and on and on and on....
I'm very happy with this purchase, finally a unit that lives up to its own hype.

Strength:

1. I purchased this head unit to allow me the maximum amount of flexibility in tweaking the sound quality to match the accoustics of my car. I have not been disappointed. The 920R comes with a mic you plug in which allows it to adjust itself for a flat frequency response as well as matched levels across the front and rear stages plus sub. For discriminating listeners looking for sound quality, the result is nothing short of astounding. After the unit adjusted itself, the only change I made was -1 on one band of the 13-band EQ.

2. This head outputs 6.5 volts to an outboard amp! I am able to adjust the input levels on my amps down to about one third leaving me with an incredibly quiet system.

3. The Organic EL display is very attractive and can be customized to a great degree to look as straightforward or as gimicky as you prefer.

4. Built-in sub crossover eliminates the need and expense of an external one and allows you to make adjustments from the listening position.

Weakness:

1. Although there is a brightness adjustment, the display is hard to read in bright light -- like many others. The Mobile ES head this replaced was particularly easy to read in all light conditions so I've had to make an adjustment.

2. Pioneer added rotary knobs on many of its heads but not the 920R. The rotary dial on my Mobile ES deck which this replaced was my favorite thing about it. Going back to volume buttons is a bummer.

3. $780 deck (retail) lacks gold-placed RCA outputs. What's up with that?

4. Strictly a matter of opinion, but why not drop the cheesy soundfields (e.g., "studio", "jazz club", etc.) and use that DSP power to allow a user to configure and save multiple EQ curves. (As is, you can save one per source.)

I definitely recommend this unit. Discriminating listeners are not going to find another head unit that allows such complete control over the ultimate sound quality in their particular car. To do better, one would have to look to expensive high-end add-on's to provide the out-of-the-box control of the 920R. The deck isn't perfect, but it's the closest thing I've found!

Similar Products Used:

I previously used a Sony Mobile ES 780 and auditioned the upper end Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, and Nak heads. None of them offered the extensive sound control available in this Premier deck. My Mobile ES deck worked flawlessly and had A+ ergonomics but to really tweaks the sound quality you had to buy a high end ($1,000) parametric EQ -- which requires a computer to program and STILL doesn't auto-EQ the vehicle's interior.

As an aside, I question the previous reviewer(s) who indicate that the sound quality of the 920R is about the same as less expensive models. They definitely fail to take into account the superior tools available only in the 920R (or 1R) which allow you the flexibility to tweak the sound to get the most out of your installation. On the other hand, if all this tweaking doesn't sound worthwhile you might be better off buying a cheaper head and a bigger subwoofer.

Strength:

Looks great, smells great, feels grear....=) The built in cross over is a great feature, and pioneer has a decent integrated amp.

Weakness:

Difficult to see the screen when the sun is really bright (I've noticed that most players seem to have this problem though) and the constant paranoia that somebody out there wants to steal it.

All I can say is that this deck beats the rest of the competition on a price to performance scale. I paid $490 for the deck by taking advantage of a price match / beat policy.

Strength:

This product is well worth the specification performances: good radio reception, great CD quality, great sound output. Nice organic EL display also. Nice analyzer, and I especially love the equalizer.

Weakness:

The EL display kinda sucks when it comes to only the limited amount of screen savers that comes with the system, they kinda suck. Supertuner is still 3, they should upgrade by now to 5.

I bought mine for $535 at everythingbutthecar.com, great for the deal I guess. I would seriously recommend the people that love their car stereo to purchase this deck. If you want to save money, the 100-200 dollar cheaper ones will give almost the same amount of sound quality.

Similar Products Used:

Premier DEH-P7000, sound quality is not as good compared to the new one. Money wise, I bought my 920R because it's top of the line, not for performance. Both my previous $250 receiver and my $535 is about the same in performance.

Strength:

All the feattures, power, and most of all the custom eq. Also I like the automatic fold down face.

Weakness:

Doesnt play scratched cds at all! Premier should fix it to where it will play any cd, scratched or not, or they should drop that BIG price.

I would reccomend this product to anyone with components, subs, and seperate amps for all those.

Strength:

Easy interface, great quality, many outputs.

Weakness:

Price

This cd deck is great. Its amazing to see the graphics flash on the screen but its even better to listen to. The music is incredibly clear no matter what kind you pop in. Theres also plenty of outputs for multiple amps and speakers. One of the nicest things about this deck though is its graphical interface, which makes configuring the system easily, even for beginners.
