Review 1 of 4

Price Paid:  $695.00 from Overstock.com

Year / Model Reviewed:
2005 Emerson NV-5000

Summary:
I had a choice between a Garmin GPS and the Emerson. I made the wrong choice. This is a total piece of junk. I found on a trip to Janesville/Beloit WI that these 2 large cities aren't even on the map! When contacting Emerson support, I found that there are no upgrades for this unit. Isn't that the pits?

Strengths:
Looks good.

Weaknesses:
Customer support is nil to non-existent. After contacting Emerson about the map errors, I did not get any satisfaction from them at all. Now, the NV-5000 is merely a conversational piece. Will I ever purchase another Emerson product? NO WAY!

Had a choice between the NV-5000 and a Garmin Street Pilot. Made the wrong choice.

Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:
is it a Toy? frankly, it's not worth it to have an emerson nv 5000, it's better to have a downloaded map from Mapquest in your car than carry this product .

Review 4 of 4

Price Paid:  $895.00 from Amazon.com

Year / Model Reviewed:
2005 NV 2005

Summary:
Relatively large touch-sensitive screen make this product potentially easy to use. However, the NV5000 seems to be a Beta test product for Emerson Radio, an electronics company which has produced primarily entertainment electronics such as car stereos, two-way radios, etc. To date, I have sent the product back to the factory 3 times for service on mostly software/firmware related issues. Now that it is again malfunctioning, I cannot contact the technical support person responsible for the NV5000. The unit boots up and shows the Windows CE operating system screen without running the navigation program. At present, my NV 5000 is sitting idly on my desktop as a paperweight, since nobody at Emerson will call me to advise how to reinstall the application software which suddenly and mysteriously disappeared. Besides this latest problem, and the earlier troubles with the software, I have had multiple hardware problems with power supplies and connectors. The unit has been quite a nuisance and only marginally better than printing hard copies of directioins from Yahoo.com and Google maps.

Strengths:
Touch-sensitive screen. Multiple destination. Multiple route selection.

Weaknesses:
Sometimes will not advise if you are travelling in the opposite direction - the unit gets confused and commands to turn onto an upcoming street which cannot be found in that direction.

This is my first GPS, but I am sorry I did not purchase a unit from a company with more experience in this product area.
